Daisy ran back to her rented house and collapsed onto her bed, feeling utterly drained. Toying with a secret agent was an experience she had never had before, as a former struggling writer and a small-time hacker. Back then, her adrenaline surged, but now she was left with a sense of dread.
After the excitement subsided, Daisy felt exhausted. Looking at her reflection in the mirror, she couldn't help but sigh. She knew she was an attractive woman, at least an 8 out of 10, but these past few days had taken a toll on her appearance. She estimated she was now only a 6 out of 10.
Honestly, she was clueless about how to dress up. Her memories of Daisy's life didn't contain much information she could use as a reference.
Unlike other people who experienced transmigration and were awakened by attractive maids or the sounds of battle, for her, she simply woke from her sleep one day and discovered that she had transmigrated.
Daisy had grown up as an orphan, departing the orphanage at the tender age of ten. Throughout her childhood, she moved through four different foster homes, where the arrangement was sustained through government subsidies covering her basic needs and educational expenses. However, her relationships with her foster families remained distant and indifferent, akin to being strangers to each other.
Being impoverished, she had scrimped and saved for years before finally buying a second-hand laptop. She had no spare money to invest in her appearance.
Facing the immense pressure of survival, Daisy knew she had to focus on staying alive for now. She could think about those trivial matters later.
The most challenging part was done; she had the Obelisk in her hands, and her only accomplice, Jasper Sitwell, had returned home, waiting for a promotion and a companion to marry.
Taking a sip of water to stabilize her emotions, Daisy opened her backpack to find the Obelisk lying quietly inside.
Without the Inhuman bloodline, touching the Obelisk would turn intelligent life into stone. Now, Daisy realized that it was the moment to confirm whether she was Inhuman or not.
Although she was quite confident that she was Inhuman, what if she wasn't? Turning into stone was not her intention.
She took out a small knife and prepared to cut off her little finger if she started petrifying.
She put a towel in her mouth to prevent herself from screaming afterwards.
"I can do this! It should be fine!" She kept encouraging herself and finally made up her mind after ten minutes.
Her left hand's little finger trembled as it reached the Obelisk. Ten centimetres, five centimetres, one centimetre.
Her finger was just a hair's breadth away from touching the Obelisk.
She clenched her teeth and pressed her finger down firmly.
With wide-open eyes, she stared at the Obelisk and her finger, but there was no petrification. It seemed the Obelisk had heated up slightly.
Still feeling unsure, she grasped the Obelisk with her entire left hand, but it remained the same, and she felt no changes in herself.
"I knew I could do it!" she exclaimed excitedly. Not wanting to disturb her roommate, she buried her face in the pillow, revelling in her success.
Placing her hand over her chest, it took a long time for her excitement to subside.
With her true bloodline confirmed and the Obelisk in her possession, she needed an activation ritual to gain superpowers. In ancient times, Inhumans had strict standards for selecting their kind. They believed that only those with the best genes could obtain supernatural abilities. The stronger the genes, the more potent the abilities, but stronger powers would also cause some damage to the original genes.
What sort of genetic anomaly did the original Daisy possess? She couldn't remember any, and she comforted herself, believing her genes to be quite resilient.
According to the original timeline, Quake did not place the Obelisk in the underground city in Puerto Rico until at least four years later. She had altered her life trajectory.
The consequence of not following the original timeline was that she was now alone without any allies. One trick was enough; she didn't want to engage in a battle of wits with those agents again.
She needed to venture out with the Obelisk, head to Puerto Rico, find the underground city, and activate her bloodline.
Using a wolf-repellent stun gun to travel thousands of miles to Puerto Rico was not the most dependable approach. Daisy's appearance didn't quite blend in with the local aesthetic, and she couldn't afford to be careless in the face of challenging situations.
She recognized the need for some form of self-defence, and obtaining a firearm became her top priority.
After counting her savings, she realized that after fooling Sitwell these past few days, she had only $900 left. She temporarily abandoned her plan to travel.
Whatever she did later, she needed money. Daisy was good at hacking, but the golden age of hackers was over, and tampering with the banking system would only lead to her doom.
Luckily, she was also skilled in programming.
A day later, she took on a freelance job to design a database entry system for a company. During the day, she pretended to attend classes, and at night, she burned the midnight oil as a programmer.
After seven busy days, she earned $3,000. Daisy first visited a gun store.
Rifles and shotguns were relatively easy to buy; they had been adjusted to semi-automatic mode, and their magazine capacity was correspondingly reduced. As long as she had ID, she could purchase them.
However, the requirements for buying handguns were more strict, requiring prior application and approval. New York law allowed holding long guns at the age of 18, but the age to purchase handguns was 21. Daisy had just turned 18 this year, and she couldn't carry a rifle to Puerto Rico.
Moreover, bringing a gun, whether by plane or boat, was not allowed, and she didn't have something space ring to help with travel. Even if she bought one here, she couldn't bring it with her. She had to figure out a way after arriving there.
Buying a gun was difficult, but learning how to use it was not. All the major gun stores had shooting ranges, and there were even more professional gun clubs that provided one-stop service from choosing a gun to becoming proficient.
Of course, all the customer needed was money and a reasonably intelligent mind.
She found a large chain gun store, showed her identity information, filled out the form, and finally rented a pistol, bought two boxes of ammunition, two pieces of target paper, and rented a gun lane. It cost ten dollars for pistols, thirty-two dollars for bullets, one dollar for target paper, and eighteen dollars for the gun lane.
Finally, after hesitating, she hired a coach who claimed to be a professional for $68 an hour.
Making full use of her spare time, she practised for a full month. It had to be said that there was a reason why the future Quake could become the director of S.H.I.E.L.D... Her physical fitness was slightly better, her vision was sharper, and her reactions were quicker than an average person's. These advantages accumulated, and her starting point was higher than that of an ordinary person. This was even before considering her superpowers and the strengthening of her Inhuman body.
The practice cost her $500, mainly due to the consumption of ammunition. She didn't dare to say that she was a perfect shot, but dealing with ordinary people was probably good enough. Using a Scanning machine borrowed from a small factory, she verified that the obelisk didn't appear at all under scanners; it seemed as if it were just a bundle of air. Daisy was completely relieved.
She changed into a travel outfit, carried a backpack, and wore a baseball cap and sunglasses as she bid farewell to her roommate. She told the school that she was taking a leave to search for her missing parents, and the school happily granted her a month's leave.
After a four-hour flight, the plane finally landed at the San Juan International Airport in Puerto Rico.
She first searched for a place to stay. While Spanish was the primary language spoken in this Caribbean island country, English was also widely used. Daisy quickly found a local hotel known for its safety and checked in.
