“Sterling, what’s wrong?”
“Sorry. I shouldn’t have put my hand on—”
“I don’t mind,” Zeke blurted before he could think clearly about the implication behind his words. Mortified, he wished he could bury his head in the sand like an ostrich.
Sterling was quiet for a few seconds before grinning. “Okay. I’ll keep that in mind.”
After that, they continued down to the beach. Zeke was elated when Sterling shifted closer to him for the remainder of the journey. They didn’t have any skin contact, but the distance between them grew minuscule. Zeke could almost feel Sterling’s body heat. He wished he could hug the man, but refrained from doing so. Besides, he would be too embarrassed to do something like that. Maybe someday in the future. He needed to work up the courage first.6
