HALF A HEART

''You're just going to drown deeper.. There's no way out.. The more you try to move, the more you try to swim, the deeper you'll sink.. The most painful thing about sadness is that it knows how to trick you.. It give you time to recover just to attack you even harder.. It tricks you into thinking that it's gone and just when you start to believe it, it comes back like a big wave and drag you back into the deep dark ocean of loneliness..'' That was exactly what Jake was going through.. He thought he will find his happiness if he get a good job, buy a house for his family etc.. But money can't buy happiness.. Things can only give pleasure and pleasure is not happiness.. Happiness is the presence of peace which was no where to be found in Jake's heart.. Half of his heart died the day Abby left.. The remaining died when his own parents stopped calling his name and started treating him like a stranger.. He stopped believing in miracles long ago .. But fate is something unpredictable and unstoppable..

The Past (part 1) "Special one"

He could still recall the first time he saw them.. At that time maybe he was too young to understand it but now that he thinks about it, it was surely love at first sight..

...

A 13-year-old kid was sitting at the corner with headphones on, eating lunch—Feeling like a side character in his own story..

Nothing about him ever stood out from the crowd..

He wasn't someone who would prefer the spotlight, rather he would just sit in the corner of his class and mind his own business—unlike those typical cheerful protagonist students.. He was just another kid questioning his identity and trying to understand himself better like everyone else..

No one ever bothered to even look in his direction except for one..

Maybe it was his dark brown eyes or his naturally black short hair that anyone could tell he cut them himself..

Maybe it was fate how Abby noticed every single feature of Jake that everyone else failed to notice..

Abby was an optimist.. A bright child with a heart of gold.. Seeing the good in everyone often brought them nothing but trouble but indeed they were an angel who will still choose to forgive people no matter how much damage they have caused to them..

Their bright smile, light-brown eyes that would remind you of sweet things like honey, chocolate or caramel— A soothing voice, and sweet caramel-coloured skin.. Their naturally fluffy light brown medium-length hair tied into a ponytail and some of it covering their forehead, reaching up to their eyebrows most of the time .. It was impossible to not notice someone like them..

A charismatic personality that could melt any heart— They were just too good to be true..

To Jake, they felt like a character straight out of a book written by a poet..

They were complete opposites of each other; Like the Sun and Moon..

Abby said hello to a few people before going straight up to Jake's table with their lunch..

"Hi!"

They noticed that he had headphones on so they took them off for him..

"I said hi!"

Jake looked up to see a bright smile on their face..

"Hi.."  he said..

Abby sat down in front of him with a satisfied grin..

"Hey! You cut your hair again?"

They reached out their hand and ruffled his hair..

"Yeah, I.. uh.." he hesitated..

"They look so cool!"

Abby would always compliment things about him that he was insecure about..

He always thought that it was just them being nice to him, not knowing that they were genuinely amazed by his features..

They would notice every single time the sunlight would hit his face making his dark brown eyes change colour and turn into a brighter shade of brown..

They would notice how he would always buy banana milk—They could tell that it was his favourite drink..

They would notice the way he gets nervous every time someone would compliment him—They knew he never actually believed any of those..

They noticed how he was always insecure about the things he should be proud of cause to them, he was perfect..

Abby was Jake's only friend.. They have known each other since Jake was 9 and Abby was about to turn 10, when Abby's family moved next door to Jake's house..

Abby was the only person who knew about Jake's relationship with his gender..

Abby, themself never felt connected to their gender—But their father always told them that it was okay to be different.. Abby never had to come out to their father, cause it was him who helped Abby figure out what they likes and dislikes..

Abby's mother died while giving birth to Abby's younger brother but their father, Jeff Wilson never let Abby and their brother Ash feel like something was missing..

He always allowed Abby to dress and look however they want..

"Whatever people may say, don't let it affect the way you feel about yourself okay? No one knows you better than you.. People who can't love themselves, love messing with people who do love themselves so, let them have their fun.. Forgive them and continue being who you are"

He told Abby the words every father should tell their children..

The day Jake met Abby's father, he was shocked.. Jeff was nothing like his father..

Jeff knew Jake was trans and he tried his best to make him feel more like himself—He even helped Jake choose his name..

He would always tell Abby to take care of Jake and to never make him feel like him being different was something wrong..

"Hey, Jake.. Wanna come over after school? Papa said that he will make brownies for us today" Abby asked Jake..

"I-I don't know.. I'll have to ask my parents" he replied

"Hmm.. Ok then!" they gave him a big smile before stealing a nugget from his plate..

"Why don't you go and get your own food"

"Nah.. I prefer stealing yours"

He just sighed and shook his head..

After school, Jake went home and asked his parents if he could go to Abby's house.. At first, they told Jake that today they all have to go to Jake's Uncle's birthday party and they will probably have to stay there for the night since it was far, but Jake insisted them to go without him and let him stay at Abby's place till then..

In the end, they gave up..

That night Jake, Abby, Jeff and Ash baked brownies and watched movies together.. Whenever Jake was at Abby's place, he'd feel more comfortable there than in his own home..

They played till it was almost 2 am Abby's father told everyone to go to bed..

Every time Jake would come over, he would share the room with Abby—Although Abby would never let anyone sleep in their room, Jake was their only exception..

They would talk about the most random things and eventually end up falling asleep while holding each other..

Abby loved hugging and cuddling with him, it made them feel safe and they knew that Jake felt the same; Although he always acted as if he hated it, a small smile would appear on his face every time Abby would snuggle closer to him in their sleep and he would softly play with their hair until he too falls asleep..
