HALF A HEART

''You're just going to drown deeper.. There's no way out.. The more you try to move, the more you try to swim, the deeper you'll sink.. The most painful thing about sadness is that it knows how to trick you.. It give you time to recover just to attack you even harder.. It tricks you into thinking that it's gone and just when you start to believe it, it comes back like a big wave and drag you back into the deep dark ocean of loneliness..'' That was exactly what Jake was going through.. He thought he will find his happiness if he get a good job, buy a house for his family etc.. But money can't buy happiness.. Things can only give pleasure and pleasure is not happiness.. Happiness is the presence of peace which was no where to be found in Jake's heart.. Half of his heart died the day Abby left.. The remaining died when his own parents stopped calling his name and started treating him like a stranger.. He stopped believing in miracles long ago .. But fate is something unpredictable and unstoppable..

"Loved me? You see that's.. where you're wrong mom.. You never loved the real me.. You guys created this image of me that died long along or maybe it never existed and .. Your love for me was based on that image.. Someone who loves you wouldn't torture their kid like this"

"You hearing all this bullsh*t!?!" his mother turned to Abby who was standing behind Jake—She grabbed their hand and dragged them away from Jake..

"It's all because of you!! You destroyed my family! You ruined our lives"

She begin to hit Abby but once again Jake covered them..

Iris was about to step in to stop her mother but Jake motioned her to stay out of this—She still was about to speak something when she saw a little head peeking out from her room.. She quickly went into her room with Lily and closed the door..

"Get out!! You both get out of my house!!"

Jake went to his room grabbing his bag and taking Lily from Iris's arms before leaving the house.. The whole time he held Abby's hand tightly—As if he was afraid to let go..

Abby was confused but they were speechless, unable to say anything.. Maybe it was because their mind was full of questions and they couldn't decide which one they should ask first..

It took them a short while to make their decision but once they did, they pulled out their hand away from Jake's..

"What was that" they asked..

"I'll explain that later please.."

"No.. I wanna know right now.. What did I do? Why were they acting as they know and if they do, why can't I remember them at all? Be honest, have we met before? A-and I killed someone?"

"No.. No, you did not you didn't kill anyone"

"But they-"

"That was all just nonsense don't pay attention to them"

"Don't pay attention to the- are you kidding me right now? Answer my questions!"

"Look .. This is not the right ti-"

"Just answer me!!"

"Fine" Jake gave up... He gave up on trying to hide their past from them..

"Yes I have known you even before we met in the office and no you did not kill anyone the person they were talking about is me and as you can see I'm still alive"

Abby couldn't understand what was going on.. The answer Jake gave them just gave birth to even more questions..

"You knew.. You reached out to me because you knew me"

"I had my own reasons I didn't want to hide this from you but I had no choic-"

"I was wrong.. I thought you were different.. I was wrong.. You're like them too.. Take advantage of me.. I should've known"

"Wait what- how's that even-"

Abby took Lily from him and said..

"We don't need you.. Stay away from us"

Jake wanted to go and explain himself but he knew that they would not want to hear anything for now..

They needed space and he knew it..

He knew that's just how people are.. He was offended or sad that Abby misunderstood his intentions..

Jake followed them from afar just to make sure that they got home safe..

It was still early so he couldn't go to his office, so he made his way to his only friend's house.. Ruby Grace..

"So you're telling me that you.. got kicked out of your house.. no- you left.. yeah my bad.. left not kicked ok.. So you left.. in this.. funny looking t-shirt that says 'I love Pokémon' and these sweatpants and these ugly slippers" she paused as she saw Jake glaring at her..

"Nah don't mind me I'm slowly trying to take in what just happened here"

Jake rolled his eyes at her..

He was wondering if he should actually move out or not when Ruby answered his question as if she could hear his thoughts..

"I think you really should move out at this point"

"Would it be okay?"

"I don't know about that but I can clearly tell that it WON'T be ok if you stay there.. Especially since Abby made their comeback"

She grab a cup and poured some coffee for Jake..

Ruby handed him his cup while saying..

"I can help you find an apartment near your Abby"

Jake shook his head..

"I don't think I should interfere in their li-"

"For God's sake, my dude just make up your mind first.. You want to stay away and watch them like a rejected puppy from afar or will you actually go ahead and make a move and make up for all your past regrets?"

She could clearly see that Jake couldn't choose.. She sighed..

"Look.. If you think that staying with your parents will change anything, well you have your answer.. You've stayed there for years yet nothing changed.. If you're worried about Iris, you can always go check up on her and she is old enough to take care of herself.. Now, as for Abby.. I think they need you"

"T-they do?"

Jake looked up at Ruby who nodded while taking a sip from her coffee..

"Yeah.. I mean think about it.. You guys separated, sh*t happened in your life as well as theirs and then you met each other again.. That's some real fairytale sh*t.. Then, you saw how they are being treated by their ex and they're not able to do anything I don't even know why, and that's where you gotta play the hero, my guy"

What Ruby said, was making sense to him..

He thought about how the story was just like a fairytale—A fairytale with a sad ending, or so he thought.. He was given another chance after all these years..

The memories started flooding back in as he begin to think about how they met and how their story begin..
