As the story progresses the detective eventually finds out about the identity of the man in black and also learns about the reason behind his actions, he decides to help the man in black with his mission and ends up working together with the Man in black, they find out the root of the 'jingle barriers'. All the while also harbouring certain romantic feelings towards one another which also get addressed and resolved all through the novel.
