Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen (March 17, 1969-February 11, 2010), formerly known as Lee Alexander McQueen, was a famous British fashion designer. He was known as the "bad boy of fashion" and was regarded as the godfather of British fashion.
He was born in London. After graduating from high school in 1985, he became an apprentice at Anderson&Sheppard's tailor shop, and later became a freelance sewing and board maker. From 1989 to 1990, he worked for Japanese fashion designer Koji Tachino. In 1992, he went to St. Martin's College of Art and Design to study. The following year, he received a master's degree. His graduation work was appreciated by Isabella Brow, a famous stylist of Vogue. In 1992, he founded a brand named after himself. In 1996, he began to design ready-to-wear collections for Givenchy. In the same year, he became Givenchy's chief designer. In 1998, his design for the Givenchy Spring/Autumn 99 Fashion Show was well received at Paris Fashion Week. In the same year, he designed an Oscar evening dress for Kate Winslet.
He hanged himself in his London apartment on February 11, 2010, at the age of 40, just nine days after his mother's death. He was awarded the title of "British Designer of the Year" four times in his life. In 2003, he was named "International Designer of the Year" by the American Council of Fashion Designs. The Queen of England awarded him the Commander of the British Empire.
McQueen's designs combined the two extremes of weakness and strength, tradition and modern, rigor and change. His works often expressed emotional power, natural energy, and romantic and modern sense in a wild way, which was highly recognizable. His brand, Alexander McQueen, had many classic designs, such as white shoes, skull scarves, and low-waist jeans. He had hosted 35 shows in his life, including Joan of Arc in the autumn and winter of 1998, No.13 in the spring and summer of 1999, Voss in the spring and summer of 2001, The Horn of Planty in the autumn and winter of 2009, and Platinum's Atlantis in the spring and summer of 2010.
