Zhao Faxuan, the 82nd generation successor of his sect, whose real name was Zhao Zilong, studied the Book of Changes and other mathematical techniques since he was young. When he became an adult, he officially entered the Shangqing Sect of Maoshan to study Taoism.
Shangqing, Yuqing, Taiqing, the concepts they represent
Shangqing, Yuqing, and Taiqing were the highest of the Taoist heavens. They were collectively known as the "Three Pure Ones", representing the three gods, Yuqing Yuanshi Tianzun, Shangqing Lingbao Tianzun, and Taiqing Daode Tianzun. This concept embodied the symbol of "Trinity" in Taoist philosophy, which meant that "Tao begets one, one begets two, two begets three, and three begets all things". In terms of cultivation methods, the Shangqing Sect focused on adjusting the mind and cultivating the spirit. They emphasized the cultivation of the essence, qi, and spirit in the human body. They attached great importance to entering the temple and meditating on the image of the gods. They did not focus on refining external elixirs. During the Northern Song Dynasty, the Yi Sect, along with Longhu Mountain and Ding Xianfeng, were the three major Taoist talisman sects, known as the Three Mountain Talisman. The sect altar was called Mao Mountain. Mao Mountain was located at the junction of Jurong City and Jintan in Jiangsu Province. It had the reputation of being the first blessed land and the eighth heavenly cave of Shangqing Sect. In the Tang Dynasty, Mao Mountain was regarded as the base mountain of the Yi Sect. The meaning of Taiqing
Taiqing had different meanings in different context. In terms of the year title, Emperor Wu of Liang used the year title of Taiqing Dynasty to take advantage of Hou Jing's surrender in the south to eliminate the northern regime and make the sea peaceful and quiet. In terms of name, Taiqing implied that it was the mountain and the North Dipper, fresh and handsome. It had the meaning of being admired, fresh and novel, and not falling behind the convention. It also meant that it was prosperous, successful, educated and reasonable, and clean. In Taoist culture, Taiqing was one of the Three Pure Ones. It was the place where Lord Dao De, the Dharmakaya transformed from the Heavenly Lord Yuanshi, lived. It could also be used to refer to the fairyland. It also symbolized the freedom and immortality of jumping out of the three realms and five elements. In some poems, Taiqing could refer to the sky, the Way of Heaven, nature, and also to the time when the primordial era was governed by inaction. The ancients also referred to the pure vitality.
Who is the Taiqing Emperor?
Taiqing Emperor was Taiqing Heavenly Lord Dao De, also known as Taishang Laojun, Dao Ancestor, etc. He was one of the Three Pure Ones and lived in the Tai Qing Realm. He was called Shibao. He held a fan with a Yin and Yang mirror in his hand, symbolizing the initial formation of the world (the sky was Yang, and the earth was Yin). Taoism called this stage "Taichu". After the formation of heaven and earth, all things appeared one by one. It was said that Lao Tzu, who wrote the Tao Te Ching, was the eighteenth incarnation of Taishang Laojun. He was the most powerful cultivator in the Dao Sect and was also the best in refining weapons and alchemy. Almost all the famous immortal pills in the Three Realms were made by him. Many of the ritual implements in the Three Realms, such as the Yin Yang Qi Bottle and the purple-gold red gourd, were also refined by him. After the Heavenly Court was established, he became the Grand Supreme Elder and assisted the Jade Emperor in managing the Heavenly Court.
