The Doctor smiled with a nod. “Yes, the test results. I ordered some bloodwork for Mr. Park. Don’t worry; it is just standard procedure. Anyway, there is nothing to worry about. The cause of unconsciousness appears to just have been a bad case of dehydration and too much stress on the body. I was worried that perhaps Mr. Park may be anemic, but thankfully that is not the case.”
I stood up from my chair, trying to regain my composure. “So, it’s nothing serious then, Doctor...?”
“Jeon,” he smiled. “No, not at all. However, I would recommend a day of rest so that he does not collapse again.”
I stared toward Hojeong, my gaze like daggers. “You got all that, Hojeong-ssi?” I had to hold back a smile when I watched him visibly gulp.
“Crystal, Noona-nim...”
I turned my attention back to the Doctor with a pleasant smile. “So, when can he be discharged, Doctor Jeon?” Even though I looked calm on the outside, I was as angry as a volcanic eruption inside. I just do not get why they do not listen when it comes to their health; it is so frustrating! My patience was already wearing thin as I watched the doctor flip through the paperwork for at least the tenth time.
How hard is it to read some numbers and make a decision?!
“Well,” Doctor Jeon finally began, “I would say that Mr. Park can go home within the next couple of hours. However, I would like to keep him on the IV drip for at least another hour. Once I am convinced he can leave without falling over, I shall give you the release forms to fill out. I assume that you are his legal guardian?” He asked me.
Legal guardian? I don’t know if I would go that far.
I thought to myself. Then, without losing my smile, I gave Doctor Jeon the most straightforward answer that I could, “I happen to be his and Their Psychologist.”
Why did I just say the P-word? I never say the P-word. Get it together, Melody; this is no time to lose your composure!
“Another doctor then? Well, normally I would not do this but, in this case, I think I can make an exception with your title, Doctor...? I don’t think I caught your name?” Doctor Jeon tilted his head to the side in curiosity.
“Marchesa. Melody Marchesa.” I bluntly replied without offering a handshake.
I am already annoyed, and this Doctor is testing my patience.
I thought to myself as I maintained an innocent appearance on the outside.
“Doctor Melody Marchesa. Perfect,” he nodded his head as if he were approving my name. “If you could so kindly make my life a little easier and check his mental health status? It would save me a call to the hospital psychiatrist.”
Is this guy for real? Talk about laziness...
“I would be glad to,” I smiled as innocently as I could muster. I honestly wanted to just shove Doctor Jeon out of the room because he was starting to get underneath my skin.
Besides that, I plan on ripping Hojeong a new one as soon as he leaves. That young man has drawn the last straw with me! I have to be careful with what I say, though, as I am still on the clock; work duty, in other words.
I have to be available as a doctor 24/7 for them a full five days a week, including a half-day for both Saturday and Sunday. When I am not on the clock, in other words, not working... I am free to say and do whatever I want if it does not violate the contract.
Oh, I believe I forgot to mention that I had to sign a second contract in order to live with them in the dorms; it was the CEO’s idea...
As these thoughts filled my mind, I noticed Doctor Jeon was finally leaving the room; I wanted to jump for joy!
“I’ll go grab the necessary paperwork and bring it back for you to work on, Doctor Marchesa.” Doctor Jeon cheerfully said as he hung the clipboard on the end of the bed before leaving the room.
Namki got up, closing the door after him. Then he turned back to Hojeong and me. This is the first time I think I have ever seen him angry. He usually just keeps all of his emotions to himself.
I feel excited about this. Why do I feel excited, though? I should not let him get carried away, right? Well, it is not like Namki is going to punch Hojeong in the face or anything. I mean, they have been friends for so many years; the very idea of violence between the two is absurd-!
That is when a yelp dragged me away from my positive thoughts.
Could this day get any worse?
Oh, how wrong I was; I underestimated how far their friendship could carry. It was like my body and face were frozen in time as my left eye twitched in disbelief, watching the events unfold in front of me. There Namki was, strangely straddling Hojeong’s thighs while his hands were balled up into fists as he held the collar of Hojeong’s hospital gown.
Why is Namki-...?
It was like my thought process of reasoning and logic had just stopped working. Namki was barking in Hojeong’s face, while Hojeong looked like a scared and cornered puppy just yelping away.
I think I may be temporarily broken because...
I am not quite sure what happened next, but for some reason... Namki was across the room, looking like he had just been tossed like a rag doll, and he had crashed into the other IV pole and medical table. Yunjun had his hands curled into fists as he stood at the end of Hojeong’s bed, just glaring at Namki, who quite frankly looked like he had been KOed in one swing. Minhyun was in a panic, trying to get Namki to respond because there was blood on the back of his head. Jeongseok was tightly holding onto Yunjun from behind, preventing him from going forward.
Wait, is he crying? Hold on, when did they get in here? Where are Taemin and Jin-hyuk? What is even going on right now?!
My question was soon answered when they came bursting into the room with what looked like an army of the hospital staff as they shouted, “Everyone out of the way!”
Someone was waving their hand in front of my face, but I was like an unresponsive statue. That is, of course, until I saw the blood on Minhyun’s hands; yes, my only weakness.
That... That is A LOT of blood. Oh my gosh. I... I think I feel a little strange... Am I going to...-? Oh, fuck...
I thought to myself, right before I passed out.
~***~
When I came to, I was lying on a bed with an icepack to my forehead.
Wait, what?
I tried to sit up to grasp the situation but was immediately pushed back down on the bed by my shoulder.
Who-?
“You shouldn’t move yet, Miss. You got quite a nasty bump from that fall. We just need to be sure you didn’t get a concussion or anything,” a lovely nurse explained to me.
I found myself just staring at her for a minute, but I guess I was staring too long because suddenly she was worried that something was wrong with me.
“Miss? Can you hear me? Is everything okay?”
“Oh,” I blinked twice, “Yes, I’m fine. I feel wonderful.”
I am just mesmerized by your beauty, that’s all. When did hospitals get such beautiful women for nurses? She looks way more attractive than me. I mean, look at her skin; it is practically flawless! I admit that I do feel envious of her.
“Are you sure? Do you need anything?” She asked me, still worried.
“No, I’m okay,” I paused to think, “Do you know where those young men are?”
“The young men? Well, one of them was taken to the operation room for stitches. He’s lucky that he did not get a concussion for as hard as he crashed.”
I don’t like where this is headed...
I stupidly began to laugh. I always laugh when I get scared. “I’m sorry, what? Did you say he has to get stitches?”
The nurse looked at me as if she had just met an alien lifeform. “Yes, seven stitches in the back of his head.”
I looked up at the ceiling without any care for what my half-horrified expression looked like.
This day just got so much worse...
“What of the others?” I asked without looking at her.
“I’m not sure how to tell you this, but since it looked like violence was involved, the five others, excluding the patient, were detained by the local police. They should be at the police station right now.”
I felt cold suddenly as an icy chill shot down my spine; it felt like I had gone ghost white. My eyes had widened to the size of saucers as I so very slowly turned my head to look at the nurse. “Huh...? They... They were what???”
Shit, shit, shit! I’m supposed to be responsible for them! Things just went from terrible to absolute hell.
“They were detained by the local-”
“I HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME!” I raised my voice like a lion’s roar. After that, my mood went from scared as hell to livid like hot lava.
The nurse flinched, unsure of what she did wrong, and in truth... She did absolutely nothing wrong.
The way I am acting is entirely unprofessional, and because of this fiasco that I could have prevented, I could lose my job! I am supposed to avoid these kinds of situations, not just sit back and watch them happen! I need to do something and fast.
I sat up again, brushing off her hand when she tried to get me to lay back down.
Before she could open her mouth, I opened mine, “Don’t try to stop me. I know you are just doing your job, but those seven are my patients, and I need to do my job by setting things right.” I got off the bed, and without looking at her, I more like demanded than asked, “Now, tell me where Park Hojeong is.”
