"Connect me to Home Base in a secure line." Kai said to no one around.
She had a serious face like she has just swallowed a bug. There was something written all over her face. It was part fear and part heartbreaking. She was scared of something for the first time in her life.
She was in a dilemma. Him or herself.
"Kai, what the hell is happening?" Ailah's voice came through the wireless comms that Kai was wearing. They were so tiny that someone had to know what they should be looking for, for them to notice.
"I am sorry, I failed again. I can't get my hands on him. I failed The Empire." Kai had a broken voice but her face still looked the same, just a stone-cold face without any emotions displayed on it.
"Don't beat yourself up for this. You acted recklessly and you got delayed on your objective. It doesn't matter as the inhabitants of this planet say, 'Shit Happens!' When it comes to your life on the line, don't think twice. You are an ace we can't afford to lose yet." Ailah said now sounding like the big sister.
"Yeah, that's right. You are my priority and I should be careful in my dealings in this new world. Thank you, I get it now." Kai said while retreating with her gaze still fixed on me.
"No, Kai. I didn't mean it like that. You should attempt to make some free time and learn about the normal way beings spend their daily lives rather than knowing only battle matters, it will be our downfall one day." Ailah said on the other side of the world with a smile plastered on her face.
"So do you mean that I rescue our target? Though I must warn you that if there is a possibility of us getting out of this alive, we will be rendered useless for the rest of our lives. But if that's your wish, then I have no fear in what awaits for me." As Kai was saying that, her voice got firm and she stopped walking back.
"No. No, Kai. I didn't mean that. Listen to both the words and meaning of everything you hear so as to grasp more than what is revealed." Ailah said while the smile on her face getting wider as time passed by.
"Then what do you mean?! Time isn't on our side." Kai had a confused look on her face.
'How could someone say one thing and mean another? I don't get it.'
Sigh! She couldn't help but think of it. As a person who has always lead on one path. The Path to Glory.
In achieving it, she had to put in her all and sacrifice a lot on the way. Her life, family, friends, a chance to normal life, and her love life. All succumbed to the drains of dirt and washed to the sea.
She worked hard on one half and neglected the other. And that's when her hard work bore fruits and was named the Guardian of The Great Sky Empire.
"So far you have been doing good. You have listened to the mustn'ts and the don'ts. You have listened to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts... Now listen carefully, listen close to me... Anything can happen, Kai. Anything can be." Ailah was reading from a script when saying this.
"Since when have you become this knowledgeable? I must admit that your adapting speed is quite high on the matters of this new world." Kai replied with a smile on her face. "But I must admit it to you that you lost me from the beginning."
"What? Okay, never mind. Let me simplify it for you."
"Hope."
"Hope?!! Just that?!" Kai asked.
"Hope can be a powerful force... So... my plan is just to wait and watch it play out and hope for the best. We are not the only ones that want to get our hands on him. Wait and see how the others may react. If they lose, then we all lose. It will be a win-win situation." Ailah replied.
"Okay." Kai said after understanding what Ailah was saying from the start.
A couple of meters away from Kai, Rue's palms were clenched into fists. She was also retreating with a sullen face. Even Vega wasn't left out on this.
Those who could understand the predicament that they were in at the moment, instinctively started moving backward in an attempt to widen the gap in between them.
"Why the sudden face? I thought that I was your objective and no one could stop you? I was even relieved when I sensed the killing intentions that you bore towards Vega. I was ready to see your puny act but seeing that you have no backbone. I am disappointed." I said ruefully without even holding back the malicious intentions coated in my words.
Tsk!
Tsk!
"You can even say such words on your current situation?" Kai asked with a raised eyebrow.
"What current situation?" I asked while shaking my head. "You thought you can scare me to death with your words? How bold!"
"Hahaha! Ha! Hahaha! Haha!" I laughed like a crazy man so hard that I could feel some tingling sensations in my body and I was also out of breath.
"Is this funny enough for you?" Rue asked. I could feel her cold gaze pierce straight to my soul. "Don't you even feel that death is smiling at you?"
"Death?!" This stunned me as the temperature around finally hit me like a blow on the face.
[Death?! I am absolute and in this place, I cannot be killed easily.
Pfft!
If only they could know who I am, they would understand. But to them, they are not worthy.]
"Stop resisting Max, and listen to me." Aya's soothing voice made its way into my head.
"STOP THIS!" I screamed while holding my head with my hands.
I couldn't bear it anymore and fell on my knees with a stream of blood gushing out of my nostrils.
The way that I was feeling right now, was driving me crazy and also draining me mentally. I wasn't prepared to have different voices assault me continuously in my head.
"Calm down Max. We don't have a lot of time and I can't allow any of you to get hurt. Rue can only put up one protection shield around her body as this explosion would be devastating for anyone who would be caught up in it." Aya started explaining.
She was still in my head but this time her voice was a little calm and I could bear it.
"Tell her to scram or she will probably be blown into pieces, she is only human. Also, we can't afford to lose you in this explosion and we can't allow them to get you either. What we need now is to escape this place. That's our priority." Aya's calm voice rang in my head.
"What explosion are you talking about?" I asked with a confused smile on my face.
I still couldn't get on my feet as I felt a little lightheaded. It was just a bit out of my expectations that left me in an awkward and vulnerable state.
[Where do you think the missile that I was holding a couple of minutes ago went? Such insolence.]
"I will deal with you later." I muttered to myself and started thinking of what the voice said.
And just like that, a trail of thoughts bombarded my mind. I was trying to recall as much as possible.
And there it came.
Just like that, the scene displayed itself in mind and I took only one image from the beginning to the end.
"The missile." I muttered to myself and looked back.
From my kneeling position, I saw it. It was a sight to behold for those suicidal, but for me. I was too young to die at this place.
Now I know why the others were retreating with unbelievable faces on them displaying only one thing.
We were all doomed!
Horrible scenes started displaying themselves in my mind. I had to admit that these scenes were extraordinary. I was in all the scenes but a feeling overtook me and I started asking myself questions about everything.
'Why couldn't I remember anything before this?'
Vroom!
Vroom!
There was a sound of an automobile that came through to my ears but I was too focused on my current situation to care any less.
Within the cluster of memories, I saw someone as clear as the daylight. There was a good-looking woman in the room that I was lying.
I couldn't see myself through my eyes but I could feel the less energy in my body and be enough to confirm that I just escaped the claws of death and my recovery was slow.
The woman had a voluptuous body that had perfect attributes. She had long flowing hair that was tied in a ponytail.
I didn't concentrate much on her body as her lips parted and she said something.
While she was holding my hand, a tear-streaked down and landed on the pillowcase. She reached out her free hand and wiped it away.
(I have done what I can. I have restored your body to my ability, the rest will depend on you. My advice to you is that you go back to your home country and find what you lost. But, only when the time comes... only when the time comes...)
And I fell as I lost consciousness. Before the view slowly faded away, I saw the missile.
