[ON HIATUS UNTIL 2025) My dear, lying dead underneath my feet. The one who gave my meaningless life meaning. People called you the devil, a horrid beast. If you are the devil, then I will throw away my humanity. If you are in this world, my love, then I don't care who is in my way, who you are, or who tries to dissuade me. I will find you, and I’ll lay the body of your enemies at your feet as people cry out your name in reverence. --- After a deal with a dark entity, Callisto transmigrates into a world of an otome game she saw in her first life with one goal in mind: Kill the god of the world Lux, and live happily with her love. Unfortunately, she ends up in the body of the villainess, Cordelia Azel, who is hated by everyone for her cruelty. But for Callisto, who walks a path towards destruction, all she needs to do is avoid death, long enough to complete the end of her deal. As she tries to live a life clearing up Cordelia's mistakes though, the love interests keep trying to get close to her? How bothersome...

Chapter 1Beginning of the End

That day, when her boyfriend's mother screamed at Callisto for being the beggar girl that killed her son's promising future, she couldn't help but agree.

That man had always told her that she didn't have to listen to his parents and would laugh, saying that the more pissed they got, the more entertaining it was to him.

His parents had never cared about him when he was growing up, so getting a rise out of them was a highlight of his day. But as Callisto stared at the closed casket, she wondered if he would be alive if she had just stayed away from him like they had told her to.

Callisto's life was meaningless, her only use being the only survivor of an international scheme, making her an important key witness in the eyes of the government.

But she was treated like an anomaly, stuck in a facility for years to make her 'human'.

Days seemed to blend in a gray sludge, an empty life with no meaning.

Even after she was allowed to roam free in the real world, none of it mattered to her. She was like a marionette, her strings perfectly orchestrated to be the ideal person, endless information shoved down her throat and stored in her brain for her to recite and perform.

Every action, every breath, crafted by someone else for her to do. Even her name, Callisto, was given to her by the government workers later in life.

It was the name of a dead, useless moon revolving around a much more important planet.

Desolate. Lifeless. A world with no reason to exist.

That was her life.

That was until Callisto met him.

He was so rude. So blunt. He didn't care what people said about him or if he offended them.

And he was ruthless. He was a known prosecutor, with one of his most infamous cases being when he attacked the alleged criminal's character that the person ended up admitting to the crime after the trial, no longer wanting to live in the shame.

She would have never met him if she didn't look into the hobby store out of curiosity, meeting his gaze from across the glass wall. And just like that, she was taken by him.

He was nothing like she thought he would be. People always viewed Callisto as an oddity, even people she had just met.

There was something incomplete about her that unnerved people, driving away the people who came around for the pretty face. But he treated her like he treated everyone else.

She doesn't exactly remember when they went from acquaintances to lovers, but she does remember every teasing smile, every surprise date, despite his busy schedule.

The late nights in watching superhero movies she didn't care about, but watched anyways, because she loved the glint in his eyes as he watched the fighting scenes, his arm squeezing around her waist a little every time an exciting action sequence was happening.

The way he acted like a little boy when he was too sleepy, and the immediate embarrassment that flushed through his face once he realized that she was watching him.

He didn't pity her or treat her like a freak, even when she disclosed some details about her unfortunate past.

Callisto didn't know what he saw in her. She came with way too much baggage for a man who could get pretty much any girl he wanted.

Maybe because they were both outcasts, and related on a level that most people wouldn't get.

Or maybe he wanted a unique trophy to tout around at banquets, and people marveling at her odd-colored eyes and leucistic mutation were worth the effort.

If she ever voiced that worry, he would have probably flicked her cheek and said, "Baby, have you seen me? No one needs to look at you when I'm right here you know. Aha!"

And then wrestle her to the floor to litter her neck with kisses.

People said he was the devil, a soulless sociopath that cared only for his ambitions, willing to step on anything to get what he wanted.

And they weren't too wrong. But his ambitions were never evil, and he never tried to hide his wrongdoings, like everyone else who pretended to be righteous.

He was fine with being the villain of everyone's story, the role that was difficult to achieve, necessary to life, and hated by the masses regardless of what he did.

Blindingly charismatic. Surprisingly straightforward. Overly confident. The love of her life.

Apparently, he was quite the delinquent in his school years, and the rebellious attitude was still there through adulthood, though faded.

She thought it was charming, but the authorities that chased after them for trespassing and lighting fireworks might think otherwise.

He was always a bit of a pyromaniac, but to think he would die in a fire was a tragic irony.

And he willingly ran back into the fire for her, throwing her out of the way before the building gave in on his body.

She could only scream as the flames engulf him, the tears evaporating off his face before reaching his shaky smile, the one he gave when he didn't want her to worry.

-----

He had more people at the funeral than she expected.

She only recognized his parents, who were barely in his life, and a few coworkers that would sometimes crash on his couch after a long night of drinking.

Callisto knew that a lot of people were glad to see him gone.

He was always making a riot wherever he was, and it made him a lot of enemies, especially with how much he argued with higher-ups.

In fact, she would go as far as to say the fire was foul play. But it didn't matter now, did it?

What did matter now was that everyone thought it was her fault that he had died, including herself. If she was faster, or more perceptive, this wouldn't have happened.

"If he had just listened to me and met with the girl from the Sinclairs, he would have been fine," his mother balled, saying it just loud enough for her to hear.

"To think he would be enraptured by some poor girl with a suspicious background."

Callisto didn't respond, unable to register anything as she stared down his portrait, hoping it would come to life.

His mother, irritated with her attitude, marched up and slapped her across the face.

But she was so rigid that her face hardly moved, the red imprint on her cheek feeling like a gust of wind compared to everything that has happened to her.

"It's all your fault! You ruined his life!" She shook Callisto, and the girl let herself be shaken.

She wished she could cry, but she didn't know how. The world became muted, and the fall afternoon felt like a dead winter night.

It was like time had paused. But as Callisto looked around and saw the leaves still in the air and the funeral-goers posed like statues, she realized it wasn't just her imagination.

If that didn't convince her, the strange entity in the sky probably confirmed some sort of supernatural intervention.

A dark figure floated above the casket, seemingly staring straight at her.

Callisto thought that she could be seeing the Grim Reaper themselves until the figure spoke through the wind, a grating sound that hurt her ears.

"Would you like to save this man?"

"Yes." The words left her mouth before she even had a chance to process the situation.

The entity smiled, its teeth sharp and white in an endless pit of darkness.

"Even at the cost of other people's lives?"

"I would do anything for him."

"Even at the cost of your own-"

"How do I start?"

"You didn't even let me finish." They said, exasperated.

"I don't care what you want me to do. As long as I can see him again."

"You wretched soul, so desperate and dependent." The spirit grinned once more. "Perfect for what is required."

"And he will be the same, right? No tricks, same soul, or whatever it is. And this mission will be doable, correct? It's not an impossible task?" She asked, narrowing her eyes.

She was willing, but she wasn't stupid. There would be a catch. If he was a different person, wasn't the same person that she fell in love with, would it be worth it? Even if it was the same soul?

The spirit laughed, guttural and unnerving. "Do not worry. He will be the same. And with the tools I'll give you, it will be possible."

"Alright. What is it then? I'll do it." Callisto said, with no hint of hesitation.

It was not like anyone would miss her, and she had no lingering attachments.

"It's simple. The one you are looking for has been reincarnated into a different world. I will bring you to that world, and you will kill the world's god for me." The entity paused, as if it expected pushback, and made a noncommittal hum when there was none.

"Once you've done that and found your lover boy, you can live however you want in that world."

Immediately she knew there was something amiss.

Years of being around people with hidden motives have made her sensitive to such things, and the opportunity felt a little too beneficial coming from something that seemed to be from a horror movie. But for Callisto, it didn't matter.

'You were the only one who saw me. Not as a tool, like the government. Not broken and damaged, but as a human. Granted, you were less like a human and more like the devil yourself, but if the devil is the only one who cared for me, then I would gladly choose the devil over humanity.'

She looked at his casket, remembering what his corpse looked like after it was retrieved from the fire.

Burnt beyond recognition, face contorted in pain as flesh melted from the heat. All because of Callisto.

'If you were the devil, then I will be the harbinger of death.'

"You who was my everything. Now I will give everything to you." She whispered to the casket.

Callisto walked into the open abyss, and as soon as she was enveloped by the dark, she disappeared from the world.

"Hmm. 'Do anything,' huh? I wonder how far this 'anything' really goes. It seems like this girl would do anything, except live on. This will truly be fun to watch, won't it, Alastor?"

The spirit seemed to be talking to open air, but whatever the response seemed to intrigue them.

"Oh, really? Do you bet she will give up as soon as she meets the fiance? Was she really that much of a gold digger? I didn't notice. I think we'll be pleasantly surprised this time around though…"

The entity makes a series of hissing and piercing noises. "She truly lives up to the name Aza'zel, don't you think?"

The wind picked up with a growl, and if there was anyone that could see, they could swear that flashes of flares and fire were intertwined in the whirlwind.

The spirit gasped as if it was choked by something. And in an instant, the celestial beings disappeared, and time started again, with a new emptiness where Callisto once stood.

A mother blinked and looked around. She had a feeling she was yelling at someone, but she couldn't figure out who.

More importantly, where was she? Whose funeral was this?

The people at the funeral blinked as if woken up from a trance.

All of them had no idea whose funeral they were at, and if someone were to open the casket, there would have been no sign of a body.

The lives of the two were long gone from this world.

I love the idea of a girl trying to see the love of her life again, and that she is willing to do anything and everything for him. I also wonder if he felt the same truly, otherwise would it be worth it to cross to another place and do all she’s doing? I really adore the way you use comparisons in your writing, it helps for the reader to be able to picture the emotions of the main character, of Callisto. “If you are the devil, I will throw away my humanity” lines like that show her passion. I also like the way the author writes some of the fighting scenes, which show Callisto’s weaknesses and strengths. I agree with some of the other reviews that the paragraphing could be split up a bit more. As for the pacing I think the incentive to continue can be a bit lessened when some things feel more like a filler than the main juicy content. It get a bit confusing in terms of direction when Callisto is still trying to adjust to this new life where she has to destroy Lux. My suggestion would be to keep Callisto’s motivation strong from the beginning, as for me it seems to wane a bit in the recent chapters. I also like how there’s still an air of mystery about the people who have Callisto the mission or chance to see her loved one again through this new world and new chance. I wonder how that will be incorporated in the future chapters. Overall, I’m enjoying this book and I’m looking forward to reading more. Would definitely recommend to lovers of reincarnated/revenge and second chance otome love stories. Keep it up, dear author!
