A/N - Apologies for no chapter yesterday. I wrote this chapter initially however I ended up rushing a lot of points leading me to completely redo it. After all this has been a long time coming and I didn't want to present the end of this own mini arc badly (resulting in such a high word count and 2 parts).
============================================================
Oz made a deal with himself that by the end of the week he would have that snake gone from this school. He kept his eyes peeled to the map, if the snake didn't return to the fireplace portrait then he would actively seek him out. The reason why he hadn't checked it out yet was mainly because he didn't want to walk into unknown territory.
From what Oz could tell looking at where Salazar was heading off to, he had a total of 3 portrait locations. One was the fireplace portrait, where he taught Oz some dark arts. The second location was in the defence against the dark arts professors room or somewhere at least around that area, this was the same area he spotted Quirrell and Salazar conversing on New Years Eve. Finally there was an area that seemed like it was off the map, probably outside the wards in some way.
With these three locations noted, Oz foresaw that the best bet was to wait for Salazar to return to the fireplace room at least. If he cornered him in the DADA professors office there's always the chance that Quirrellmort will be there, as a matter of fact he was usually there most nights probably talking with himself... As for the other room outside the wards, anything could be there. Even though Oz was personally interested as to what else this school had hidden away he didn't want to risk letting free another evil portrait or something. Maybe in the future when he's at a level he feels the most confident at, more than likely when he reaches the next step, he can take more risks and actively enter that room now knowing there's another room like so that exists.
Salazar seemed to spend the most time in the other room outside of the schools wards, probably doing something there... Oz already came to the decision now that if he didn't reappear by the end of the week in the fireplace room at least, then he would chase him down regardless of the risks. Luckily for Oz, in the middle of a certain lesson he got his chance...
.
During a potions lesson, Snape had ordered the class to make a set of potions used for healing amongst other things. Oz had already long surpassed this level of potion making with his strides in the RoR that he made this year so he very quickly whipped up the potion, adding his own little findings here and there to optimise it. When he finished the potions he needed to for the lesson, he took a quick peek at his map under the table.
'He's in the fireplace study! Why the hell did he have to pick now of all times to return...'.
Looking around the classroom and then at Snape, Oz sighed. He knew that there was no way Snape would just let him up and leave even if he had done the work. For some unknown reason, Snape had become extremely critical of Oz lately as well so any hope of leniency would be thrown out the window. Seeing no other choice, Oz raised his hand.
"Excuse me professor".
Snape snapped his head around as he glared at Oz.
"What is it Mr. Ambrosius?".
Oz put on a slight face of distress.
"I desperately need a piss, can I be excused?".
Snape looked at Oz in disgust before ushering him with his head that he could leave. At that, Oz took his potions to Snape's desk and told him he had finished as well before he left quickly. Oz did initially have the idea of pouring potions together to explode and smoke bomb the room... but then he realised how stupid of a diversion that was. The old toilet break tactic has never failed since the dawn of time.
As Oz ran out the class he found a spot enclosed from everyone's sight in the hallway where he cloaked and augmented himself. With himself cloaked and augmented he sped towards the other side of the dungeons where his dorm is in order to finally end this stupid paintings life once and for all.
'I have a lot to question that asshole about...'.
.
After several minutes of running, Oz finally ended up back in his room in the dungeons. He checked his map again quickly to see that Salazar was still down there. Knowing this was a prime chance to lock him somewhere he knew about, Oz instantly ripped open the fireplace hatch and darted down towards the portrait room.
While running down the stairs to the portrait room, Oz's mind was swimming with a myriad of thoughts about Salazar and what his goals must have been in the past year.
'From what I can tell now... That snake taught me in order to lower my guard. As I left the school for the summer, he might have taken that chance to establish some other portrait connections in order to not be stuck with me coming down and seeing him in that room. Dumbledore did explain that certain high level wizards inside portraits can control magic in the area around said portrait and Salazar fits the bill there seeing as though he's a founder... that explains why he was able to attack me with dark magic in the first year from time to time. He didn't expect me to balance my core out though completely negating the effects of dark magic...'.
While Oz was still thinking, He eventually ended up upon the door to the portrait room deep underground. He had kept himself cloaked all this time, specifically masking his magical signature as much as possible so as not to alert Salazar. After taking a deep breath Oz kicked open the door.
Immediately as Oz entered the room, he saw a shocked Salazar who was sat leisurely on his throne with a drink in his hand. Before the old snake could react Oz casted:
"Colloportus Effigies!".
As the spell was cast it made Salazar's whole portrait light up with a white light. The man inside was now cut off from his other portraits. Salazar realised this and immediately looked at Oz with anger in his eyes.
{What's the meaning of this Oz?! Is this how you treat your teachers!}.
Oz chuckled as he heard Salazar speak.
"I'd hardly call you a teacher snake... You've been sneaking around all year which has been making me particularly worried about what an old fogey like you could be up to... care to explain now we've got the time?".
Salazar looked at Oz in defiance.
{What I do is hardly your business is it?!}
Oz's eyes became extremely cold as he looked deeply at Salazar. The man inside the portrait shuddered as he saw Oz's now purple eyes. Taking another long deep look at Oz, His face fell into a slight shock.
{What on earth happened to you... You have a dragon's aura! You're core level as well... What the hell have you been doing this year?}
Oz smirked at Salazar who was confounded by Oz's power now.
"What I do is hardly your business is it?".
Hearing his own words thrown back at him, Salazar looked incredibly exasperated. While staring down at Oz with a venomous glare, Oz started to speak his mind.
"To be honest snake I don't need you to explain what you've been up to... As a matter of fact I already have an idea of what you've been doing".
Salazar looked at Oz in disdain. While the boy had indeed improved a lot since he last saw him, how could he know what he was up to?
"Let me be blunt Salazar... In the past year you've been meeting up with Quirrell right? My defence against the dark arts teacher to be precise... Actually let me rephrase myself a bit. You've been meeting up with your 'heir' thats inside Quirrell. Is that more on the nose?".
Hearing this from Oz, Salazar showed a face of shock. Oz relished in the old mans confusion.
"Imagine your disappointment when you got to meet the man known as your heir... He was done in by a literal baby! Hahaha".
As Salazar heard Oz's insult he snapped all of a sudden.
{YOU THINK THAT IDIOT IS WORTHY OF BEING MY HEIR?! YOU THINK THAT IDIOT IS WORTHY OF BEING RELATED TO ME AT ALL!? He is a complete FOOL! In his pursuit of power he succumbed to his fear of death leading him to use 'that' art... Only an idiot would resort to such measures!}
Hearing Salazar's outburst, Oz realised exactly what he was talking about.
'So it seems this snake didn't see Riddle fondly after learning of his efforts with horcruxes... He probably realised his heirs plan when he saw Quirrell in the first place seeing as though the man is a walking 'temporary' horcrux'.
Oz looked disdainfully at the now seething Salazar.
"Isn't living inside a portrait a way of preventing death to some extent as well? Where do you get off chastising your heir when you yourself are also afraid of death to the point you'd stuff yourself in a painting".
Salazar darkly chuckled at Oz's quip.
{Yes, yes... well to you right now it seems that I'm stuck in here forever... However...}
While Salazar was talking, the dark magic in the room started to bend to his will.
{I specifically designed this portrait to house ME and MY POWER. As you can see even while in here my will can control the magic in the room you're in. I've waited many, many years in the hopes that I could escape to somewhere...}
As Oz saw Salazar gain momentum he wandlessly augmented himself so his reaction speed was at a peak, just in case anything were to happen. Staring at the old snake Oz asked.
"Is that where you've been running off to as well? Trying to find a way to escape that portrait?".
Salazar chuckled again at Oz's comments.
{You certainly have that beasts intelligence... but you're off the mark by a bit. At this point I don't mind telling you that I've been creating creatures within a room somewhere that specifically are designed to suck out a persons soul... If I can get my hands on a soulless body I can get out of this painting for good...}.
As Oz heard Salazar's plans he felt himself become angry.
"So those dementors that attacked me and Harry... That was you?!"
{Dementors? Is that what you call those wraiths... Quite the catchy name I must say! Back when I and the other founders were around I used to use those wraiths to fuel a lot of experiments. Such pleasant creatures being able to absorb dark emotions...}
As Oz heard Salazar's words his mind was shook.
'He was able to create dementors but doesn't know their names? how could... wait a minute... If I remember correctly from studying on the matter, Dementors first came about fully when Ekrizdis tortured muggle sailors at sea, that place he tortured them at became the Azkaban we know today. Its not far-fetched to think that dementors appeared before then as they are more of a force of nature than anything else... Salazar was around way before Ekrizdis so it only makes sense that he views them differently, even having a different name for them...'.
The pieces were finally falling into place. Salazar was the one who released the Dementors after personally creating them in the 'third' room he goes to. Quirrellmort could easily have also been involved as well with the two working together in order to revive Salazar to some extent, implanting the portraits will into a soulless student. As Oz was brooding over all of this Salazar's eyebrow unfurrowed.
{So those beings attacked you... no wonder they were dispatched so quickly. I told that idiot heir of mine that you'd be an issue yet he never listened, only ever seeing that little boy who survived his killing curse as a threat. Such a fool...}.
Admitingly when I first introduced dementors during the troll attack I did it to add tension. Overtime however I settled on the idea that Salazar would have had a hand in it. I then thought of what Dementors do, especially during a dementors kiss (suck out the soul). It would make perfect sense that Salazar would want a soulless body in order to escape, a body that could house his will and allow him to live again renewed.
Ill explain a lot more next chapter as this is Part 1 of 2. Why are there 2 parts you ask? well besides for some Dramatic effect, I feel as though this event was a long time coming and deserved it. This has been Oz's own 'boss' since he started Hogwarts after all and his first boss in this new world.
