2 weeks later
Kyle opened his eyes and the first thing that came into his view was the white ceiling of the ward he was placed in. He slowly sat up from the bed he was sleeping on before looking around him.
He was in a hospital, but this wasn't what he expected. Kyle had imagined that the next time he opened his eyes, he'd be in the afterlife.
Kyle analyzed the situation for a short while and noticed a tight grip on his palm. To his surprise he found his mom lying next to his bed with her head resting on the soft mattress. She held his hand tightly as if she were worried that someone might try to steal him away from her side.
Kyle was touched by this gesture, but he also felt guilty. He continued to silently look at his mother and then wondered how devastated she must have been when she found out about his accident.
Kyle subconsciously placed his other hand on hers and silently muttered " I'm sorry mom."
Natasha was taking a short nap after staying up the whole night looking after her son. In the two weeks since Kyle's accident, she was so worried because he hadn't opened his eyes once.
Although the doctor assured her that he would be fine, it was not enough to ease her heart.
Normally, she would watch Kyle in his bed until daybreak and only take a short nap during the day while holding his hand. This is just like what she was doing right now, but today she felt another hand touch her hand.
Surprisingly, this sensation seemed familiar and wasn't strange at all. Even though she already had an idea of who might be touching her, Natasha raised her head from the mattress to look up at the person.
Kyle noticed a change in her posture, so he tried taking his hand away from her, but Natasha moved faster than he did and grabbed his hand.
As Natasha stared at Kyle for a few seconds, she pleaded, "Please tell me it's not my imagination this time."
Kyle smiled back at her "Mom you are gripping my hand too tightly and this is definitely real so you don't have to worry anymore." Kyle responded jokingly.
Natasha's eyes became teary when she heard her son speaking to her after such a long period of time. She immediately threw Kyle into her embrace as she began to cry.
"You fool, never scare me like that again." Natasha said.
" I won't mom and I really never wanted to give you a heartache but I just couldn't watch that little girl die gruesomly." Kyle explained while embracing Natasha.
Natasha released Kyle from her embrace and held both of his shoulders.
"I understand what you mean, and it is clear to me that you have always wanted to be a hero, but promise me you won't ever do that again." Natasha said with a serious look on her face.
"I promise you mom." Kyle immediately agreed.
Natasha sighed in relief and kissed his forehead.
" What's so funny?" Natasha asked when she noticed Kyle grinning at her.
"You really should take a look at the mirror, you look like hell right now mom." Kyle teased and this made Natasha pout her lips.
"Of course and whose fault do you think it is?" Natasha retorted.
" I am truly sorry mom, I knew I was reckless and that has caused you to worry a lot." Kyle really felt guilty so he couldn't stop himself from apologising again.
"It's okay Kyle, but you are definitely liable to get grounded after all this is over."
"I wouldn't argue with that because it's fair enough."
Both of them would have continued bantering with each other just as they normally did. However, when the door opened and the doctor who was also accompanied by a nurse walked in they had to stop.
"I see that you're finally awake Mr. Kyle," the doctor said as he approached.
"Yes, he just opened his eyes a few minutes ago and I was just about to call for you." Natasha responded.
" It's fine, since I had already anticipated that he would wake up soon and I must comment that I'm impressed with the speed of your recovery Kyle."
The nurse explained with a smile, "You must be a high ranking Matahuman."
"What are you both talking about now? Kyle is just a regular human like me and you." Natasha asked but her question was
Kyle and Natasha were both confused but Kyle immediately kept his emotions in check and asked the doctor "How long have I been out?"
"Two weeks to be exact Mr. Kyle and by the looks of it you should be discharged tomorrow because you seem to have recovered fully but we would just like to observe you for today in order to avoid complications."
Kyle nodded. "That's fine with me. I don't feel uneasy or pain anymore."
"Alright, I would be taking my leave now because I have to attend to other patients. However this nurse would return in three hours to check up on you." The doctor slightly bowed before leaving with the nurse.
After the doctor and nurse had left, Natasha asked, "Are you sure that you're ready to go home?" I don't have any idea what they are saying but it doesn't really matter as long as you're fine."
" Yes mom, I'm okay, so I think we can go home and beside I have been here for two weeks which means I must have missed a lot at school." Kyle answered.
" Tsk Tsk .. I can't believe you still think about school in this condition when they didn't even call even once during the past two weeks you have missed." Natasha complained with a frown.
Kyle chuckled. "I have always told you that you are bound to get wrinkles if you always keep frowning like that."
" Don't even think about patronizing me now Kyle "
" Okay, but let it pass, all it takes is just two more years and I'll get into college." Kyle pleaded.
"We'll talk about this later but I'm more concerned about your health. You don't have to worry about the hospital bills because they have been taken care of by the family of the young girls you saved."
" Apparently, she was from a wealthy family and they also gave me a ten thousand dollar check which I still haven't received yet. However, I left it with the doctor. I was waiting for your decision when you wake up."
" Then you should go collect it mom. You could pay off some of our debts with that money so you don't have to worry."
Natasha couldn't argue with what Kyle said because it was definitely the truth so she definitely agreed with him.
They both spent the whole day together. The only time Natasha left his side was when she headed to the ladies room because Kyle kept complaining about how swollen her eyes looked.
The next day Kyle was finally discharged and he returned home with Natasha.
The apartment they lived in was not average at all. It was located in a run-down, slum apartment.
When Kyle arrived home he immediately headed to his room to have a relaxing shower. Meanwhile, Natasha hurried to the kitchen to prepare a proper breakfast for them both because Kyle hadn't had a good meal since the moment he woke up.
Kyle was in awe as he kept staring at his own body through the wall mirror and he couldn't help but mutter " This is totally insane or am I imagining things?"
Generally Kyle was slim and bony, but the figure he was looking at was a very refined body with a lot of muscles, and he even had packs. It was no less than a body that had been extensively trained.
Although he didn't notice it when he regained consciousness, he realized that he felt much stronger than he normally was.
Kyle immediately took a shower and changed into a much more suitable outfit before heading out to the living room.
Natasha was already setting up the table. She had prepared a very light meal for both of them to eat.
"You are just in time Kyle. I was just about to call you and is it just me or you look way better than before?" Natasha said while taking her seat by the dinning table.
" Stop teasing me mom, and beside what did you make? "
" Nothing much but it will do, there wasn't much ingredients at home so I guess I will have to get groceries tomorrow"
" This is alright, I love everything you make." Kyle said as he took a seat by the table to eat.
Natasha smiled back in return.
"You know mom, you don't really need to stay at home to take care of me. I'm sure you haven't been to your food stand in a while, and if you continue like this you will definitely lose customers."
Natasha raised her face from her plate to look at Kyle. "How can you say that? You just got back from the hospital and you expect to leave...."
"It is okay mom, as you know I'm fine and you said earlier that l look way better than before." Kyle interrupted.
Natasha hesitated for a bit. She ran a small food stall in their neighborhood which was the only source of income they had. It would be really disastrous for the business if they lost more customers.
At the same time Natasha felt that leaving Kyle all by himself after just getting discharged from the hospital was uncomfortable for her.
" Seriously mom, after breakfast I'm just intending to take a nap so you really don't have to worry and don't you say something like you're going to watch me sleep again."
Natasha studied Kyle's facial expressions for a few seconds and finally agreed. " Alright, I'll do it because you're insisting so much. It feels like you're trying to get rid of me so I'll just leave you alone for now." She casually joked.
It was partially the truth but Kyle didn't give any response to the accusations and just laughed it off instead.
Natasha snickered playfully. "You're not even trying to deny it."
After the meal Natasha hurried to her room to get herself changed while Kyle cleared the dishes.
"I'll be leaving now but are you sure that you don't need anything before I leave?" Natasha announced.
As I said, I'll just take a nap, so just take care." Kyle politely declined..
She smiled back and kissed him on the cheek before walking to the table to pick up her coat before leaving.
