System Of The Undead

Many years ago, a meteorite crashed into earth in New York city and this was the beginning of mankind's unprecedented evolution. The year was 2030 and humanity had reached a stage that would not have been possible otherwise without this external factor but they weren't satisfied. In the selfish attempt for humanity to once again force their evolution, the search for immortality began. A man named Dr. Schneider was the man responsible for this feat and he did achieve his goal but like the saying goes, be careful for what you wish for because that immortality came in the form of something perverse and twisted to nature. It came in the form of zombies. The world was in shambles or was it? Jason, a 21 year-old shut in, he was at the bottom of the food ladder due to his life choices, disowned and alone, he was willing to waste the left his life gaming but even with this dedication, he wasn't that great a gamer. But fate had something in store and that was in the form of a 'virus' transmitted through the gaming headset he had on and this would change Jason's life for either for better or for worse. "We can't stay here…" Rachel said as a couple of minutes had passed.

She knew they had to act themselves and not rely on external forces, no miracle would happen in the presence of that many zombies.

Rachel knew the chances of them dying were high and she would always put her sister first.

Bella was skeptical, she wanted to wait for them to return because they were in the fucking military and had given them a command to stay put.

Bella was going to trust them over Rachel any day but she didn't want to be the only one here as she didn't know what would come through that door.

They gave them guns to defend themselves but if they were certain of their safety, they wouldn't have given them guns prompting Bella to question a lot of things.

"What about Jason?" Lillian asked and Rachel was getting irritated by her attachment to this stranger but she didn't show it.

"I promise you he will be fine! He is strong!" Rachel reassured her sister but Bella knew that she was full of shit. Rachel was leaving Jason for dead.

Bella was disappointed but she understood, Jason could very well be dead and it wouldn't be wise for them to wait around for him if that was the case.

"Are you coming?" Rachel asked Bella and the lady nodded.

She wasn't about to be left behind as they exited the room, they were on the first floor and their destination was the rooftop.

They needed high ground because they could better defend themselves or barricade the entrance even though the chances of them starving to death were high.

They couldn't clear a building with that many zombies and so few weapons.

Luckily for these ladies, the path was clear as General X had been through it.

Lillian held her older sister's hand as she guided her up the stairs, the floor had been cleared already so they didn't have to worry about anything else.

"The door is locked!" Bella said.

"I can see that, I have eyes…" Rachel responded while cocking her pistol and aiming it against the lock, Two bangs followed and the lock was broken.

Rachel barged through the door, she did a quick survey because she had no intention of putting her sister in harm's way.

"It is clear!" Rachel said.

The other two entered with the door shutting behind them but with the lock destroyed, they couldn't secure themselves but they just wanted to wait out the worst-case scenario.

Gunshots played an opera below, it was troubling but the fact that there were still gunshots showed that they were very much alive.

"What is the plan?" Bella asked.

"Look at the floor," This was all Rachel said and Bella did as she was told but to her surprise, she couldn't see a single zombie.

"The zombies are all inside. If it comes to it, we will…." Rachel said, pausing momentarily before looking at Bella.

"Y-You're kidding right?" Bella asked.

"We will have to jump…" Rachel said what they were both thinking.

They were a little over 3 stories high and Bella was skeptical that they could even survive such a fall. If they did, it wouldn't be without life-changing injuries but they hoped that the worst-case scenario wouldn't come to pass.

Sam advanced, he was smart because he used the environment to his advantage, and used the zombies' senses against them by tossing objects away from his travel path to draw them away, only using his guns when absolutely necessary.

Sam covered more ground but he couldn't move forward when he encountered over a dozen zombies. He tried to use the same tactic but his feet had stepped on a fragment of glass that proceeded to shatter beneath his feet.

He cocked his gun and fired but his ammunition soon finished.

"Fuck me…: Sam cussed but he didn't look worried about the situation he found himself in.

The zombies had one thing against them and that was their nonexistent intelligence.

This allowed Sam to outsmart them as he managed to lure the zombies away from that position as they chased but Sam ran up the wall and jumped on the ceiling, hanging there until they passed him beneath, chasing where they thought he would go.

Sam dropped down soon after, as he heaved a sigh of relief, he was glad he wasn't with the rest of his team or he wouldn't be able to do all these things.

"That was easy," Sam thought to himself, if the zombies were this simple-minded then there shouldn't be a problem.

Unknown to Sam, the hallway he had just cleared was the same one that Jason and Clementine had.

The pair were surprised that the zombies were drawn away, Jason and Clementine walked out of the space they were confined in and it didn't take up to five minutes for them to run into Sam.

"You fucking bitch! I thought you were dead! Welcome back!" Sam didn't hide his excitement.

Clementine rolled her eyes, she tried to keep her cool but the foolish grin on her face betrayed her.

Jason picked up on the atmosphere and wanted to confirm something.

"Are you guys…" Jason said but both parties shot him a look filled with murderous intent.

"Don't you dare finish that question!" Clementine warned him and judging by how disgusted they looked, Jason thought.

"Yup, they are fucking," But then he remembered his priority.

"Where are the girls?" Jason asked Sam but something about Sam's demeanor told him that he didn't have anything to worry about but he wanted verbal confirmation.

"They're fine or should be fine. General X is holding the last line. I was sent to find you both so we can leave this Godforsaken place…" Sam said but his face soon went white.

"Shit… I think I messed up," Sam said but the people he was talking to had no idea what they were saying.

"What is it?" Clementine asked him.

"I might have led another wave of zombies to General X…" Sam said with an awkward smile.
