Reach The House

Erik, Liam, and Mia tensed, preparing themselves for whatever might emerge from behind the slowly opening door. They had faced so much already that their bodies instinctively braced for another fight, another threat.

The door creaked wider and a figure stepped into the dim light of the clouded day. It was an older man, stooped with age, his face etched with lines of worry and fatigue. His eyes, though, lit up with recognition and relief when they landed on Liam.

"Liam!" the old man's voice trembled with emotion, and he took a halting step forward, his arms opening wide.

"Grandpa!" Liam rushed forward, his own relief palpable. He embraced his grandfather tightly, the tension draining from his body as he held the man who had raised him. "I was so worried about you. I thought..."

The older man hugged Liam back just as fiercely, his hands shaking slightly. "I'm here, boy. I'm here. Thank God you're safe."

Erik and Mia watched the reunion, their own hearts lifting at the sight. The small moment of joy and relief was a balm to their frayed nerves.

Liam pulled back slightly, his eyes scanning his grandfather's face for any sign of injury. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"

His grandfather shook his head, though his expression remained grave. "I'm fine, just a bit shaken. I heard the howls and saw... saw things outside. I've been hiding in here, hoping you'd come back."

Liam nodded, his grip on his grandfather's shoulders firm but gentle. "We're going to make sure you're safe. We need to find somewhere more secure."

Then Liam turned to Erik and Mia, the realization hardening his face. "We need to keep moving. We have to make sure your parents are safe too."

"Right. Let's get back to the car." Erik nodded, a sense of urgency returning to his face.

With Liam's grandfather safely in tow, they made their way back to the vehicle. Erik started the engine and they continued their journey, navigating through the debris-strewn streets with caution.

As they drove, the reality of their situation weighed heavily on them. The world outside had become a battleground, and the familiar streets of their town were now a landscape of chaos and danger.

The air was thick with the stench of burning vehicles and the acrid tang of smoke. Anxiety gnawed at their hearts, every shadow and distant sound making them jump, fearing a wolf might leap out at any moment.

Erik's hands were white-knuckled on the steering wheel, his eyes scanning the road ahead intently. Liam sat beside him, his grandfather in the backseat with Mia. The old man finally broke the tense silence, his voice trembling slightly.

"What... what is going on out there?" he asked, his gaze shifting between the three young faces.

Liam turned to his grandfather, his face drawn with worry. "We don't really know, Grandpa. The wolves, the winter... it all just happened."

"It's like the world turned upside down overnight," Erik said while keeping his eyes on the road.

The old man sighed heavily, leaning back in his seat. "I see. Well, let's just keep moving then."

The conversation lapsed back into silence, the only sounds the rumble of the engine and the crackling of distant fires. They continued their journey with grim feeling in their heart, each moment filled with the fear of what might be lurking just out of sight.

Not long after they reached Mia's house. Erik parked the car and Mia wasted no time, leaping out and running towards her home.

Her heart pounded. Just as she reached the front door it flew open, and her father appeared, holding a shotgun.

"Mia!" His voice was rough, but there was a raw edge of worry that she had rarely heard before. His face, usually hard and stern, was pale with fear for her.

Without thinking, Mia found herself enveloped in her father's embrace. His arms wrapped around her tightly, the shotgun forgotten and fallen at his side.

She stood stiffly, unsure of how to react. This was the man who had caused her so much pain, yet here he was, holding her as if he truly cared.

"I'm so glad you're safe," he murmured, his voice choked with emotion.

Mia felt a confusing swirl of emotions. She had spent so many years hating this man, resenting him for every bruise and harsh word. Yet now, in the midst of this nightmare, his embrace felt like a lifeline.

Erik and Liam watched from the car, their expressions softening at the unexpected reunion.

Mia's father finally pulled back, his hands gripping her shoulders. "We need to get inside, it's not safe out here."

Mia shook her head firmly. "I can't. I have to go save Erik's parents."

Her father saw the determined look in her eyes, a look that told him arguing was pointless. With a resigned sigh, he nodded. "Alright. I'm not letting you go alone. I'll come with you."

He grabbed his shotgun more securely and gestured towards his truck parked in the driveway. "I'll follow you in the truck. We'll be safer that way."

Mia's heart swelled with a mix of relief and surprise. Despite everything, her father was willing to help. "Thanks."

She quickly relayed the plan to Erik and Liam who then nodded in agreement. Erik started the car again, the engine's rumble filling the uneasy silence.

Mia's father climbed into his truck, the shotgun resting on the seat beside him. He started the engine and followed closely behind them as they navigated the debris-strewn streets.

The convoy moved cautiously through the cluttered roads, the flames of burning cars casting an eerie glow on the surroundings. Anxiety hung thick in the air, every distant howl or rustle setting their nerves on edge.

When they reached Erik's house, the sight that greeted them made their hearts seize with icy fear. Two giant wolves stood ominously in the front yard, their massive forms casting long shadows. The wolves' eyes glinted with a predatory hunger as they stared intently at the house, their hackles raised.

Erik's heart pounded in his chest. His mom were inside. Erik gritting his teeth and flung open the car door then jumped out.

Liam and Mia immediately followed.
