Alex pondered about which Pokémon to use for his fight against Brock.
Since he had to tell his average level beforehand, it would be best to decide right now which Pokémon he wanted to use.
Alex showed a smile when suddenly an idea occurred to him. 'Hmm... I have 3 LV 47 and 3 LV 45 Pokémon, so with an average level of 46, I will have the most flexibility.'
He looked at Brock and said, "Level 46."
Brock was astonished to hear this. "Level 46? Are you bluffing? How can you get so strong so quickly? Less than a year ago, your strongest Pokémon was only at LV 35."
Alex smirked at Brock as he said with a slightly scornful look, "What's so surprising about that? Not everyone is as lazy as you and doesn't waste the potential of their Pokémon."
Brock didn't know how much angrier he could get, but he was getting near to his limit, "Oh~ you are so going to regret this. I am gonna defeat you in front of the whole world, and then we will see if you still have that smirk on your face and dare to utter such arrogant words."
....
After thirty minutes, the cameras were set up—operated by several staff members, and the recording was being broadcasted live.
In addition, there was even a trainee who was doing the commentary to narrate the fight to the audience.
Alex suddenly felt an unusual feeling. He was calm, just... he was not used to being filmed like that.
It reminded him of the Kanto rookie tournament.
A staff member was chosen as the referee. He gave the signal to both Alex and Brock to call out their first Pokémon at the same time.
Just like in the Kanto rookie tournament, the Gym Leader and the challenger may switch their Pokémon only once in the middle of the fight. So it is vital to choose the first Pokémon wisely.
Scizor and Rhyhorn appear on the battlefield simultaneously.
------------------------------
Pokémon: Rhyhorn
LV: 43
Type: Ground/Rock
Ability: Lightning Rod
Gender: Male
Potential: Silver
Moves:
- Horn Attack, Tail Whip, Fury Attack, Scary Face, Smack Down, Stomp, Bulldoze [E], Chip Away, Rock Blast [E], Drill Run, Stone Edge
- (Innate Talent) Thunder Fang [E]
- (TM) Protect
------------------------------
Alex's head immediately started to think about several things. 'Level 43? Will his next Pokémon be on LV 49? Or does he has only this Pokémon to use between level 40 and 49? No matter what, this Pokémon has only 3 Expert-rank moves, which for an Elite-level Pokémon is really pathetic. Plus, it only has one TM move. Is he even trying to train him?'
The referee looked at both participants and slowly began to count down from three.
"3,2,1, Go!"
Alex said calmly, "Scizor, prepare [Agility] while maintaining a distance from Rhyhorn."
Although he can now give his Pokémon commands telepathically, Alex doesn't want to reveal this unnecessarily.
He's going to take part in the championship tournament soon, and he doesn't want this trick to lose its element of surprise just because of his fight against such a weak Gym Leader as Brock.
Brock looked at Alex and said, "I see that you're trying to run away. But this will not work against me. Rhyhorn, Bulldoze while you run off towards Scizor."
Unfortunately, the arena for this fight was relatively small. Scizor reached the invisible transparent Psychic field very quickly, which is activated to protect the trainers and prevent the Pokémon from leaving the arena.
Also, Rhyhorn is not as slow in the world as it is in the game.
At least in terms of speed, he is just as fast as Scizor. But it can hardly change its direction while running, so this speed does not come without a drawback.
Scizor finished [Agility] and felt his body lighten up.
Rhyhorn—trying to cut off Scizor's path—didn't expect Scizor to suddenly get faster, leading to Scizor escaping from Rhyhorn. This sudden increase in speed threw Rhyhorn off.
It was also at this moment that Rhyhorn's weakness of not being able to change his direction at high speed was being exhibited live in front of the audience.
"Scizor, keep dodging Rhyhorn while using Swords Dance."
Scizor, who had run to the opposite side of the arena, went to the middle part of the arena—to have more options for movement—as he prepared his new move.
Brock grimaced when he saw how Scizor was strengthening himself while outrunning his Rhyhorn.
He showed a grunted with dissatisfaction. He said to Rhyhorn, "Bulldoze again, but this time, make sure that it can't dodge you."
Alex said with a disdainful look, "Do you think it is Rhyhorn's fault that he couldn't hit Scizor? What a joke!"
"SHUT UP!! I don't need advice from a rookie like you."
Alex looked at the camera and said with a smile, "Scizor is 4 levels higher than your Pokémon, has Agility on the Expert-rank. Yet, you haven't changed your Pokémon. Is that really Rhyhorn's fault, who has not yet evolved into his final form and is hardly trained by his trainer?"
He and Brock were on such bad terms with each other so far that Alex didn't even try to fix it.
He has no apparent advantage in doing so, but it made him very happy to expose Brock in front of the whole world and to take a bit of revenge.
Rhyhorn chased Scizor across the arena and had trouble hitting even when Scizor was against the protective shield due to his poor manoeuvrability.
Scizor was able to successfully use [Swords Dance] 3 times during that time.
But Brock, who saw that, still didn't change his Pokémon, which Alex could understand a bit.
After Alex had talked about how Brock had made a big mistake, if Brock changed his Pokémon, it would be like admitting his own mistake and hitting his own face.
Alex can easily understand Brock's "what would people think of him" mentality.
'What a misplaced pride! And he was talking me down for my arrogance, heh!'
He felt that the more time he spent with Brock, the more he despised him.
Suddenly Rhyhorn realized the pattern of Scizor's dodging and finally hit Scizor with a [Bulldoze]. Although it didn't do much damage, it made Scizor a little slower.
He was even faster than at the beginning of the fight, but not much.
"Ok, Scizor, you've played enough. Use Metal Claw and defeat Rhyhorn."
"Rhyhorn, use Bulldoze again."
Both Pokémon finished preparing their move simultaneously and hit each other. But by comparison, Scizor's attack was much stronger than Rhyhorn's attack.
Rhyhorn flew 5 meters back despite his massive weight and landed unconscious on the ground.
Scizor had lost only 15% of HP from two hits from Rhyhorn.
On the other hand, Rhyhorn was immediately knocked unconscious by Metal Claw.
Alex looked at Brock and said, "My condolences to Rhyhorn. It's a pity to have such a useless trainer."
