"You are new here so I'll let Sui-Feng show you around the Division as well as introduce you to your role as the commander of the Executive Militia. She will also be acting as your lieutenant for the Executive Militia until you have gained control over them."
Sui-Feng looked as if she wanted to object but she saw Kukaku giving her a look. The former kept did not say what she wanted in the end.
"Understood, Yoruichi-sama."
Sui-Feng walked past Yami and out of the room.
Yami saw that she was not going to wait for him so he nodded to the others before walking out of the room in order to catch up with Sui-Feng.
After the doors to the room closed, Urahara started laughing to himself but was given a swift kick from Kukaku. The woman then turned to Yoruichi and began to speak her doubts.
"Why did you put a newbie fresh out of the academy in charge of the Executive Militia? Even if he has strong combat potential and made a decent grade in the officer class at the academy, you've integrated the Onmitsukido into the 2nd Division. These are two very different beasts."
Yoruichi smiled at her long-time friend as she shook her head.
"Which is why I assigned Sui-Feng to be his second-in-command. She can teach him the ropes."
"This brings me to my other issue. That girl has been expecting that promotion. She has been by your side for over 50 years waiting for you to promote her to a more official position. By giving it to him, she will resent him for it. The girl may even try to kill him."
Kukaku knew that Yoruichi had already considered these points but she couldn't help but point them out. She wouldn't feel at ease if Yoruichi didn't answer them for her. But as she was waiting for Yoruichi to speak up, it was instead Kisuke.
"Even more reason to give it to him. That girl has become too comfortable because of Yoruichi's spoiling. She is talented, I will admit that. She may even lead the Division and Onmitsukido after us. But in terms of maturity, she is lacking compared to Yami."
Kisuke was also confused by Yoruichi's interest in the boy. Ever since she recommended him to the academy, Kisuke had been keeping a close eye on Yami to make sure he was not a spy planted by one of the enemies of the Shihoin Clan.
After observing him for a while, he saw why Yoruichi was so invested in the kid. He seemed very cold and standoffish at first, but after watching him for a long time, Kisuke saw the kid had principles and lines he was unwilling to cross.
And even though he seemed like he would prefer to work alone, on missions when he was working in a group, he would stay in his role. Whether that meant he was supposed to lead, scout, or be the kido user of the team, he perfectly accomplished his role without complaint.
Sui-Feng on the other hand had become far too arrogant. Because of her upbringing in the Feng Clan, she had a very aggressive attitude coming into the division. But thanks to Yoruichi spoiling her in order to try and get the girl to become more 'human' she ended up warping Sui-Feng's personality in a different way.
Sui-Feng's loyalty to Yoruichi was unquestionable but she also thought that she deserved to be by Yoruichi's side and was the one who determined if others were worthy of doing the same. Even though Kisuke and Kukaku had been close with Yoruichi for much longer than Sui-Feng, she was still aggressive toward the former because she found him unreliable.
In Kisuke's eyes, he also thought it was better to give the position to Yami. It would humble Sui-Feng and give Yami a chance to grow much faster. Doing this would push the growth of two potential captains in Kisuke's eyes.
Kukaku heard Kisuke's words and didn't say anything else. Even if she questioned some of Yoruichi's decisions, as long as Kisuke supported them, she knew there was nothing to worry about. The two of them separately were unreliable but when paired up, they were probably the most dangerous due in the Gotei 13 besides the Captain Commander and his lieutenant.
Yami walked behind Sui-Feng as they walked through the barracks of the 2nd Division. There was tension in the air as all the members of the 2nd Division who saw them, could see the scowl beneath Sui-Feng's mask.
"Sui-Feng-dono seems to be pissed off. What did that new guy do?"
"You didn't hear. That's the promising new shinigami who just graduated from the academy. Captain Shihoin promoted him right out of the academy and gave him the position of the 4th seat as well as putting him in charge of the Executive Militia."
"Him? He doesn't seem like much."
"Don't underestimate. He graduated in two years and was the rival of Kaien Shiba."
"The 5th seat's younger brother? The prodigy of the Shiba Clan?"
"Exactly. So he might not be unworthy of his seat. But we are just ordinary shinigami. Mortals shouldn't interfere in the affairs of gods."
"True. Let's get back to training."
The shinigami that had gathered around to gossip had quickly dispersed. They were normal members of the 2nd Division and not even true members of the Onmitsukido. They knew better than anyone what it meant for someone to be a part of that elite group and an officer nonetheless.
The 2nd Division barracks were pretty basic. They looked like standard dorms that other shinigami had but it was underneath the barracks that the true secret of them was exposed.
Yoruichi had moved the Onmitsukido HQ under the 2nd Division. Although there were less than 120 members of this group, they were some of the most elite shinigami in all of Soul Society, able to compete with the elites from the 6th or 1st Divisions.
Sui-Feng brought Yami directly down to a training room. The place was dimly lit but spacious making it excellent for the combat that the Onmitsukido specialized in.
The young woman turned around before unsheathing the wakizashi at her waist and pointing it at Yami.
"Prove to me that you are worthy of Yoruichi-sama's trust. Otherwise, I will kill you here and now."
Yami didn't say anything but unsheathed his blade and held it in his right hand in front of him.
