Dexter and I played hide and seek in the room, the echoes of our laughter filling the space. I knew it was odd to be enjoying myself in such a dire situation, but Dexter's demeanor made me feel like a carefree child again, a time before zombies and danger had changed everything.
When Dexter finally found me, I couldn't help but laugh. It was a pure, genuine sound, and for a moment, I forgot the fear and uncertainty that had been hanging over me. Dexter's playful smile and the way he treated me with such kindness made me feel as if I had stepped back into a simpler, happier time.
After our game, Dexter guided me to the front of a large mirror. He gestured for me to sit in a plush chair and began to gently comb my hair. I watched my reflection as Dexter worked, his movements tender and careful.
"My daughter would grow up like you," Dexter said quietly, his voice filled with an emotion I couldn't quite place.
