Nick Fury looked like an actor from a low-budget movie only if wiped the creepy smile from his face. Fury slapped the files on the table and sat beside Lester.
"Hope you didn't have trouble on your way here, Brennus Shaw," Nick Fury said. "Or would you prefer if I called you Shadow, the top assassin of the last decade?"
"B-Brennus, is that true? Are you an assassin?" Emma's shaking voice entered his head.
Brennus frowned at Fury. He couldn't guess Fury's motive here. "Well, what about the guy beside you? Didn't he score several dozen heads in his life?"
"Huh?" Fury leaned forward and gripped his knuckles under his chin. "He is Benjamin, a brilliant detective with a medal on his shoulder. Have you mistaken him for someone else?"
"This fucker," Brennus whispered. "What's your point in bringing this up?"
Fury ignored Brennus and looked at Emma. "It seems your little girlfriend couldn't take the shock. Then what will she say if she sees this."
Fury tossed a file at Brennus. "At the age of ten, you left the orphanage with an old man. Five years later, you debuted and killed a politician's son. Then his right and left hand man before you stabbed a blade through the old politician's heart."
Fury retold Brennus's life, piling files after files of his achievements. Emma shook, repeating the same question, 'Is it true?'
Emma's reaction was normal, but it disappointed him. He expected more from her.
Emma squinted at his disappointing expression. "I'm sorry for… not trusting you. We need to get out of here first, then tell me everything… if you still believe in me."
Brennus smiled and gave a quick nod as Emma continued, "Nick Fury is thinking of blackmailing you with your previous crimes."
"I can see that." Brennus raised his hands with a grin. "Then what're we waiting for, Lester? Here are my hands. Bring out those metal cuffs and arrest me."
Fury and Lester stared at him. Brennus's grin stretched wider.
"Of course, you can't. You two are the ones mistaking me for someone else. Yes, I grew up in an orphanage. But I was a nerd, always studying to tackle my exams. Hell, Manhattan was my first step out of that town."
His two identities came into play.
"You forged another identity to escape."
Brennus shook his head. "Can't the cops find the legitimacy of my documents? Surely, you guys are more competent than that."
Fury frowned grimly while Lester grinned, waiting for his trick to work.
"He is thinking of bringing you to their base in Boston after this."
Brennus nodded at Emma's thoughts. His head buzzed again.
"I still don't see the point of this whole discussion."
Fury nodded his head. "I want you in my team made to fight the rogue mutants."
Brennus narrowed his eyes. Fury knew his little stunt in the New Salem bank robbery.
"Isn't that what X-Men are here for?"
"X-Men is a bunch of vigilantes playing superhero. Our team is supported by the states, to protect the states."
"What if I decline?"
"Then sadly, I'll have to arrest you. Your girlfriend will also be taken into custody."
He glanced at Emma frozen in fear. She quickly recovered.
"He isn't lying… he has three mutants outside to force us. What do we do?"
Brennus was about to stretch his wings, but the crackling thunder caught his attention.
"Agent Fury, we are under attack."
"It's Magneto. And he ain't alone this time."
The communication device in Nick Fury's pocket buzzed with reports. A shockwave rocked the entire bar, spilling the drink on the table.
"Storm, Jennifer, whoop their ass. Make sure to catch him and his goons this time," Fury spat, looking angry.
"Understood, Captain."
"Raise my pay this time!"
Fury ended the commlink and stared at Lester. "Who compromised our location?"
Lester shrugged. "I don't know, Boss."
'This guy stabbed Fury in the back.'
How fascinating.
Fury, still unknown of this, looked to his side. "Kitty, we're going outside."
"As you say, Sir."
Cold sweat drenched Brennus's back. The voice came from behind him, and he didn't notice any presence. Brennus spun around and glared at the brunette dressed in a black skin-tight suit.
She was the one triggering his senses over and over.
[Katherine Pride (Level 59 Mutant)]
[Main Skill: Intangibility]
'Intangible. She can pass through objects. These mutants sure possessed some darn useful abilities.'
Nick Fury slammed the table. "Shadow, today's your lucky day."
Brennus returned a smile. Nobody here could hold him except the behemoths fighting outside. The destructive sounds were enough to make him understand — the fight outside wasn't something he could participate in, not right now.
Bam!
The walls exploded, and a green figure approached like a jet. Brennus's senses buzzed like no tomorrow. It was a true life and death situation. Adrenaline surged through him, slowing down the time. He spread his wings instantaneously and dove at Emma.
The green monstrosity flew above his head and through another wall.
Brennus looked away and turned to the bronze-skinned man donning green undies. He had black hair and unusual tapered ears.
[Namor McKenzie (Level 155 Mutant)]
[Main Skill: Superhuman Strength]
Brennus pulled Emma to his feet and jumped aside. He wasn't going to step in a fight he couldn't hope to win.
"By gods, does that woman hit harder than my mother."
"Prince Namor," Nick Fury uttered, pointing his gun at Namor. "Why are you cooperating with the Brotherhood?"
'Brotherhood?'
"They seemed to be a mutant faction," Emma said.
Namor swung the water off his trident and placed it on his shoulder. "The surface world denied any recognition for Atlantis. The Brotherhood promised it.
Nick Fury intensely glared at Namor. "And you believed everything Magneto said?"
"I was also bored. This proved to be a good way of taking off some rust, so I rode along."
A green-skinned woman walked out of the rubble and spat on the ground. "Jerk of Atlantis, is it all you have got?"
[Jennifer Walters (Level 158 Mutate)]
[Main Skill: Hulk Mode]
Brennus's luck stat worked in overdrive here. He got to meet the most obnoxiously strong superheroes and villains in just one day.
Namor pointed his trident at Brennus's wings. "Nice wings, by the way."
Brennus raised his brow a bit. Lester snuck over to Namor and peeked his grinning face from his back. "Farewell, Nick Fury. I shall have my freedom again. Don't worry though, I'll mail my resignation lette—"
Bang!
A bullet hole opened in Lester's forehead. Brennus blinked his eyes as Lester collapsed in a pool of his blood, never to draw a breath again.
'That was anticlimactic. He betrayed Nick Fury for freedom. Seems possible.'
Namor didn't bat an eye as if Lester's life meant nothing to him.
[Optional Quest 'Expected Betrayal' completed.]
[1 X Rank-E XP Potion added to your Mystic Dimension.]
At least Lester helped in completing the quest. Brennus caught a hardly noticeable smirk on Fury's face. The bullet came from his side.
'Corrupted authority.'
