chapter 3: Reflection in the dark

Mavis's POV:

Later that evening, Mavis found herself alone in her room, absentmindedly scrolling through her phone. She didn't want to admit it, but her mind kept drifting back to that moment with Jake earlier. The moment she realized he wasn't Johnny—definitely wasn't Johnny.

She bit her lip, her fingers hesitating over the screen. Curiosity was gnawing at her, and despite herself, she started searching for images—specifically, comparisons. She was trying to make sense of the difference she'd seen, trying to understand why she felt so thrown off. Jake looked just like Johnny, but when she had seen... 'that , the difference had been obvious. She typed something vague into the search bar, her cheeks flushing as she browsed through a few images. Some were around seven inches—Jake's size, give or take.

Her eyes widened as she stared at the photos on her phone, feeling a heat rise in her face. The differences between what she saw now and what she knew from Johnny were undeniable. Johnny was around five inches, and while it had never been an issue between them, seeing something so starkly different in Jake had left her... surprised. Shocked, even.

Why am I even thinking about this? she scolded herself, setting her phone down quickly and running a hand through her hair. Her thoughts were spiraling in directions she didn't expect, and it was making her feel a little... guilty.

But he looks just like Johnny, she reminded herself, her heart pounding as the memory of their encounter flashed through her mind again. The resemblance was uncanny, but the differences were there too. Jake was composed, calm, and now she knew—physically different from Johnny in more ways than one. The thought of it made her stomach flutter in a way she didn't quite understand.

What am I thinking? She stood up abruptly, trying to shake off the thoughts that were invading her mind. This wasn't right. Jake was her 'brother-in-law', not Johnny. She shouldn't be thinking about him like this—shouldn't be comparing them. But now that the thought was there, it was hard to ignore.

Without another thought, Mavis transformed into a bat and flew out of the room, hoping the cool night air would clear her mind. She needed to get away from these confusing thoughts—away from the idea of Jake and what she had seen.

As she soared through the darkened sky, she tried to push it all away. But deep down, she knew it wasn't going to be that easy.

---

Jake strolled through the vast halls of Hotel Transylvania, taking in the sheer variety of creatures he encountered. The hotel was bustling, filled with all sorts of monsters he'd never thought he'd see in one place. It was a surreal experience, but he was adapting quickly.

As he wandered past the pool, he spotted a female mummy lounging by the water. Her bandages were wrapped in a way that highlighted her curvy figure, and she was catching the attention of quite a few other monsters. Jake found himself doing a double-take. Wow, who knew mummies could look that... attractive?

He shook his head, laughing to himself. 'Focus, Jake. This isn't why you're here'.

He continued down the hallway, greeting various monsters as he went. There were werewolves, invisible men, witches—so many different types of creatures, each with their own unique quirks and personalities. It was fascinating to see how they all coexisted together.

As he walked, his thoughts drifted back to Mavis. He hadn't seen her since breakfast, and part of him wondered how she was doing after their awkward encounter the night before. I should probably check in on her.

Suddenly, an idea popped into his head. Wait... I don't even have her phone number. He felt a little ridiculous for not thinking of it sooner. It would make things a lot easier if he could just text her or call her when he needed to.

Without thinking twice, Jake pulled out his phone and opened up a blank message, then hesitated. How do I even ask for her number without making it weird?

He decided to keep it casual and sent Johnny a quick text instead:

---

Jake:"Hey bro, do you think Mavis could give me her number? Might be easier to keep in touch while I'm here."

---

As he waited for a reply, Jake kept walking, still getting a feel for the place. Despite everything that had happened so far, he couldn't help but smile. Being here was a wild ride, but it was also kind of... exciting. There was no telling what might happen next.

---

Jake continued to explore the hotel, trying to blend in among the unusual guests. Monsters of all shapes and sizes passed by, some greeting him with a friendly nod or a toothy grin. He still felt a little out of place, but the unique atmosphere of Hotel Transylvania was starting to grow on him.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was Johnny.

---

Johnny: "Oh sure, dude! Here's her number. She's usually awake around this time, so go ahead and text her. 😎"

---

Jake stared at the number for a second before saving it to his contacts. *Should I text her now?* He hesitated, thinking about their last interaction. The look on her face when she realized who he really was still lingered in his mind. But he couldn't avoid her forever, and it wasn't like asking for her number was anything out of the ordinary. It would just make it easier to stay in touch.

With that thought, he opened his messages and sent a quick, casual text:

---

Jake:"Hey Mavis, it's Jake. Johnny gave me your number, hope that's cool. Just wanted to check in and see how you're doing."

---

After hitting send, he slipped his phone back into his pocket and continued walking, trying not to think too much about it. He made his way to a lounge area where a few monsters were gathered around, chatting and laughing. Jake spotted the female mummy again, this time talking animatedly with a couple of werewolves. She caught his eye for a brief moment and flashed him a sultry smile, but Jake just gave her a polite nod and moved on.

He was trying to avoid any... distractions.

Just as he found a quiet corner, his phone buzzed again. This time, it was Mavis.

---

Mavis:"Hey, Jake! Yeah, no problem at all. I'm doing okay. Just hanging out. How about you? How's the tour around the hotel?"

---

Jake smiled at her response. She seemed to be in a better mood, which was a relief. He quickly typed back:

---

Jake: "It's been... interesting, to say the least. This place is huge. I've met some pretty unique characters so far, haha. How's your day going?"

---

As he waited for her reply, he glanced around the room, taking in the gothic décor and the mix of ancient and modern furnishings. The place really had a strange charm to it, much like the residents. He started to relax, feeling more at ease with each passing minute.

His phone buzzed again.

---

Mavis:"Yeah, the hotel's like a maze sometimes! My day's been fine, just the usual stuff around here. Want to meet up later? We could hang out, maybe grab a bite to eat?"

---

Jake raised an eyebrow. She's inviting me to hang out?.He wasn't sure if it was because she wanted to clear the air after last night, or if there was something more to it. Either way, he couldn't say no to the opportunity to spend some time with her.

---

Jake:"Sure, that sounds great. Just let me know when and where."

---

As he hit send, he couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity. Spending time with Mavis might help him understand this weird connection they seemed to have, and maybe they could finally talk things out.

For now, though, he'd focus on making the most of his time in this bizarre, yet fascinating hotel.

---

Just as he was about to settle into a chair, his phone buzzed again.

---

Mavis:"How about we meet at the hotel café in an hour? I could use some fresh air, and it's pretty quiet around that time."

---

Jake smiled. He liked the idea of getting away from the bustle of the main areas of the hotel for a while.

---

Jake: "Sounds perfect. See you then."

---

An hour to kill. He decided to explore a bit more, keeping his mind off of Mavis for the time being. But a small part of him couldn't help but wonder how this meeting would go.
