CHAPTER 17

 The next day, I collected my new car. Despite not being the most visually appealing vehicle, I focused on speed and ensured it had anti-motion sickness technology. It was satisfactory. "So you're off to your first official job. Best of luck," Hugo commented from behind.

"I am, I was planning on heading to Vesper but I think I'll report in once I'm back,".

"Remember to prioritize safety, kid. Safety comes first," Hugo advised.

The task at hand was to apprehend a gang of thieves located near the forest that separated the capital from a small village nearby. According to the council member who had assigned me the job, the only route between the capital and the village was through the forest Which was currently being Occupied by the Bandits, not allowing anyone to pass through.

This usually wouldn't be a problem for the royal guards, but according to the council, there was a chance that a Mage was involved.

I packed all my things into the trunk of the car which included things like ropes, Magic cuffs, food and water. Then I entered my car, turned on the key and was away.

The car was running quite smoothly even though we were running on uneven ground. Still, some jumps were present. This model was still a prototype and I had to inform Vesper of the need to improve the suspension.

I was using a map and even some help from the compass and eventually, I arrived at a point where I felt comfortable which was near the assigned town.

I then went to the mayor's house. At the edge of the capital was a small town that marked the beginning of the road to the village. The request was submitted by the mayor.

I had an interest in exploring the town since it was my first time here, but work took precedence.

I walked up to the gate and the guard standing questioned me. "Kid, what are you doing here, this is private property".

"I am here on behalf of the request that the mayor posted, my name is Jin Russel, freelance Mage".

"Aren't you a little too young?, just show me the request paper and your freelance badge and I will let you in".

I gave the man what he asked for, and although a little shocked he let me in and I was on my merry way to meet the Mayor.

I was currently inside the mayor's office speaking with the man who had also confirmed my identity and was telling me the information about the job.

"The village is a cotton farming village and due to the thick forest, there is only one route. Three weeks ago, a cart was robbed while heading there. The guards were dispatched to rescue them, but the bandits were skilled at concealing themselves in the forest. We are unable to send any help into the forest, and we also believe that a mage may be present among the groups of bandits, possibly as their leader.

I immediately headed there on foot to check for some trail or footprint or even better a scent of a person. However, it turns out that trying to track someone when you have no idea what you are supposed to look for makes it impossible.

As I wandered around the forest, I discovered a small pathway created by people walking, and it seemed to be the group of people I was searching for.

[It looks like a trail that might be used by the bandits, so how do you wanna do this?]. Sage questioned me.

"Complete with physical force even if a mage is present, I wanna try out some fresh moves and also turn off the Spatial perception". I replied. It wasn't that I was taking the bandits lightly but rather if I can't beat up a bunch of bandits without magic then I can't ever seek and beat Acnologia.

I followed the trail and eventually reached an encampment that had been near a cavern. Upon seeing the wagons and the campground, I climbed on top of the oak and eventually found numerous men around a fire eating and chatting.

I waited about on the tree until it was night, and after withdrawing a bundle of rope from my inventory that I created using Spatial magic I leapt into the night.

Immediately upon landing, I rushed towards a man standing guard and beat him up by hitting him clean in the face.

I was like an assassin through the night, silently and efficiently neutralising targets. 

(Bandit POV).

It was my turn to be on the night watch, but the guys on the previous shift hadn't returned yet. And I was currently on the lookout for them.

"John, where you at?".

Then I saw it a cloaked figure standing beneath the tree with John at his foot broken and bruised. 

The clock was 5'1 so I think it was a short person but the blood dripping from his hand made me think he wasn't a sane one.

"Who are you?". I asked out of fear.

"I am Vengeance".

That's all I heard before he rushed to me and landed a heavy blow to my face and gut essentially knocking me out. I knew the boss would take care of the kid.

Eventually, I headed deeper and deeper beating the shit out of anyone I could find and eventually, I reached a small standoff with a Bunch of Bandits and a Man who looked like their leader.

Everyone charged at me but I started to beat them left and right breaking bones and jaws in the process until only the boss was remaining.

The leader was shocked and a little scared but he pushed forward and brought out a staff and a wave of lightning poured out of it which I dodged and rushed towards him. The battle wasn't even a battle due to the fact that he was down when I punched him once in the gut...I was disappointed and my day was ruined.

But a job was a job so I tied them up and dragged them out to my car in order to hand them over to the council.
