I'm not really that confident about my writing abilities, so I'm saying this now: Any fanfiction writer (most probably a NaZa fan, but anyone really) can adopt my story as long as you tell me where you posted your version and the title of your story so I can search it up (or a link if possible, through PM or reviews). I really love NaZa (eventhough JErza and NaLu is basically already canon at this point), so I wanna read someone else's version of my story with better writing skills than me. I have zero experience with romance, so this fic is gonna suck so bad.

Now that the original FT has ended, crack-shippers and NaZa fans has already achieved closure, and has already pretty much dwindled out. I'm 95% certain that this story will not receive much NaZa fans since most FT readers nowadays are those NaLu or canon pairing fans who just wants to read any story they can find for the hell of it. So I'm not really expecting this story to receive positive reviews, most will probably be NaLu and JErza shippers flaming me. But just as I don't go around gassing canon shippers, please respect my ship as well. If you're just here to flame a NaZa shipper, then please be mature and just skip this story altogether, lest you want to disgrace your divine canon pairing.

This is my ideal version of how I want FT to have gone, so there may be familiar scenes from the manga/anime that I tweaked for my own personal delight. So in case you'll be wondering later on, here's the answer. Characters may be OOC, but not too extreme. Just enough for the sake of the story.

BTW, this is a NaMiZa fic. It's not just slight JErza (for sake of plot) or NaMi. TBH, I'm not sure if this will end with NaZa or NaMi, but let's see.

To the 5% NaZa fans out there who somehow miraculously stumble upon this story, Enjoy!

Chapter 1: Heartbreak

Looking out the window, Erza was thinking about the events that transpired after the Oracion Seis incident.

After they stopped Nirvana, the Knights of the Magic Council came just in time to arrest the defeated Oracion Seis, and to the surprise of everyone, Jellal. Besides Wendy and Carla, everyone knew the crimes that Jellal committed during the Tower of Heaven fiasco. However, they all acknowledged the fact that no matter how grave Jellal's crimes were, it doesn't change the fact that he still helped them stop Nirvana.

Seeing Erza sad that her long-lost friend was about to be taken away, Natsu did the unthinkable: he fought back the Council Knights. Everyone was prepared to silently let this injustice go, knowing it was futile and furthermore foolish to go against the Magic Council, and yet seeing Natsu fight back hard against them, they all gained the courage to fight for Jellal.

However, they were quickly overwhelmed by the numbers of the Council Knights in their beaten-up states.

Seeing this, Erza grit her teeth and let them take Jellal away, putting her friends above her own feelings. While she would've wished to go back to FT with Jellal, she couldn't fathom the responsibility of bringing her friends down as well. Faced with these two choices, she chose her friends in a heartbeat.

Releasing a long sigh, Erza stood up and quietly exited the guild. Several guild members noticed Erza's sour mood since they got back from their mission, and most were left in the dust as to why, save for the ones who were actually there.

In the bar, Natsu was with Mira, Lucy, Wendy, Happy, Carla and Levy. While the girls were all chatting about the new issue of Sorcerer's Weekly, Happy was eating a fish and Natsu was slouched on the bar watching Erza this whole time. Seeing Erza leave the guild, he remembered what happened after Erza excused herself shortly after Jellal's arrest.

Flashback

She was in a secluded part of the forest, crying with her knees to her chest, thinking that no one else was there.

Natsu approached Erza with silent footsteps, so as to not startle her.

Sensing someone approaching, Erza quickly got her guard up and wiped her face with her forearm, before facing her intruder. To her relief, it was just Natsu.

"Yo, just here to see how you're doing. Everyone's pretty worried." he lied, knowing that it was the only way to approach Erza in this state. For as long as he could remember, Natsu had a crush on Erza. He was always conscious of his feelings for her and questioned it, not knowing if it was love or admiration. But after saving her from the Tower of Heaven, he has come to terms with her feelings for Erza and fully accepted it.

"I appreciate it Natsu, but you don't need to worry about me. Please tell everyone I'm fine," Erza responded, quickly trying to get rid of him. Natsu looked at Erza with a questioning look on his face.

Normally, Erza would ask Natsu why he's looking at her like that, but in her vulnerable state, all she could do was just look down and try her best to hold in her tears.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Natsu asked out of concern, seeing tears threatening to come out of Erza's face. "There's nothing to talk about, Natsu. Just give some time to myself, please" Erza pleaded, trying harder to get Natsu to leave.

"Then why do you look so sad?" Natsu asked as he sat down beside Erza.

Fed up with Natsu's stubbornness, Erza snapped. "That's none of your business. Like I told you, I'm fine, so please just leave me alone and tell everyone they don't need to worry about me" Erza said in a more forceful tone this time, shocking Natsu.

Seeing her snap at him, Natsu realized it was useless to talk to Erza as she is now. Normally, Erza was a collected person, so seeing her lose her composure around him so fast, he could only guess how much she was hurting inside.

Looking at Natsu's face, Erza felt ashamed of herself. He was only trying to be a friend for her, and she pushed him away. Seeing Natsu stand up and turn his back on her, she couldn't hold back the tears that threatened to fall from her eyes anymore.

Dejected, Natsu stood up and walked away, but as soon as he heard droplets hit the ground, he turned around and his eyes widened. Seeing Erza cry broke his heart and remembering his promise to Simon, he resolved himself.

This time, instead of sitting beside her, he hugged her, surprising the scarlet-haired knight. Having a feeling he was gonna regret his next words, he said it anyway.

"I know how much you want to be alone right now, but it will hurt less if you talk about it with someone." Erza hesitated, already used to bottling up her feelings. But in her vulnerable state, she thought that it wouldn't hurt to tell her friend what she was thinking.

"I still haven't truly forgiven Jellal for what he did back then, but whenever I recall my childhood, I can't bring myself to hate him." Natsu just listened to her intently, urging her to continue.

"It was hell back in that cursed tower, but with Jellal and the others by my side, I was still able to create fond memories of that time, no matter how difficult it was."

"After he changed and betrayed me, I closed off my heart. But thanks to everyone in the guild, I was able to slowly open it once again, despite using an armor to protect myself." Natsu recalled the time when Erza told them why she wears her armor.

"And yet, even after all he's done, when I saw him again, I was so happy. And when he told me he doesn't remember anything, it broke my heart. All the memories we shared together in the tower, it was just gone. But it still gave me hope that I could change him and have him back." Not liking where this was going, Natsu subconsciously loosened his hug on Erza. Caught up in her thoughts, she failed to notice it.

"I know it's not normal to feel this way about someone who caused me and my friends suffering, but he was more than just a friend to me. To me, he was my ray of light in those dark times. That's why it's so difficult for me to let go of him. This is why I'm afraid. Not of Jellal, but of myself. Because no matter how many times he hurts me, I know that I'll always go back to him in the end." Erza had a gentle smile on her face as she was saying this, not even realizing it herself.

"I guess what I'm trying to say is-"

"You still love him." Natsu cut her off, surprising Erza not at Natsu's words, but at her own realization. Thinking hard on it, she knew that Natsu was right.

"I do." Erza said, reaffirming her feelings. After her confession, they were wrapped in an awkward silence.

Erza felt so much better because she was finally able to achieve a sense of closure to her pent-up feelings. Meanwhile, Natsu was in shock and didn't know what to say. After all, if the one you love just openly admitted to loving someone else, what else can you do or say.

"Hey Natsu, say something will you. I thought you were gonna comfort me as a friend" Erza joked in seemingly high spirits.

"But you can't have him anymore, can you?" Natsu said bluntly, shocking Erza.

"Natsu? What are y-"

"Erza, will you listen to me now?" Natsu said quickly, interrupting Erza.

Erza was gonna question Natsu for his behavior, but seeing his serious face, she acquiesced.

"Erza, I'm sorry about what I just said, but I want you to listen to me. It's not that I want to shoot down your feelings for Jellal, but there's just no future with him."

"So are you telling me to just get rid of my feelings for him? That's not how it works, Natsu." Erza chided.

"That's not it! All I'm trying to say is that you need to move on. You don't have to get rid of your feelings for him, but you also need to find someone else. Otherwise, you're just gonna spend your whole life pinning after someone who you can't have."

"What's the matter with you!? First you tell me to talk about it, and now you're shooting me down."

"All I'm saying is that spending your time thinking about a guy that's basically gone will only make you suffer."

"So you're saying I should just forget about Jellal and move on?!" Erza said with a loud voice.

"It's better than sitting down and crying! You're not the only one who gets hurt when you cry!" Natsu shouted back.

"Then why didn't you just leave me alone like I told you to?!"

"Because I love you!" Natsu shouted on instinct, instantly regretting it. He lost his cool and blurted it out in the spur-of-the-moment.

"What?" Erza asked, surprised. 'Did he just say that?'

Seeing her reaction, Natsu quickly tried to cover it up. "What?" he asked back, trying to play it off (and badly at that).

Natsu was thinking of either running away or coming clean, 'To hell with it!'

Choosing the former, Natsu left Erza in the dust. For the rest of the trip back, Natsu avoided Erza.

'Was I mistaken?' Erza thought to herself.

Flasback End

"I wonder why Erza's so upset lately. I haven't seen her like this in a long time." Mira wondered.

After seeing Erza leave, Natsu decided he would chase after her. Using an excuse to leave, Natsu said, "I'm gonna go fishing."

"Want me to come with you, Natsu?" Happy asked, lying down on the bar with his hands patting his bulging stomach.

"It's ok. I'm gonna do some training after, so just rest there."

"Hmm… Alright, get me some big ones." Happy said, his mouth drooling.

Sweatdropping, Lucy said, "You just ate."

With Erza

On her walk to Fairy Hills, Erza continued to think about what Natsu said. She was very confused about her own feelings, and she desperately wanted to clear it up soon.

'But now that I think about it, did I truly hear him right? Or maybe he meant something else? Grrr… I don't know anymore!'

Figuring out the best way to sort out her feelings was to talk to the guy in question, she turned around and marched up to Natsu's house.

'I'll just wait for him to come back home. It's embarrassing to do it at the guild.'

With Natsu

Going to his house to prepare himself, Natsu smelled Erza's scent.

"Erza? What's she doing here?" Since Erza almost never visits Natsu at his house, the last time being their vocabulary lessons when they were still children, Natsu already had a feeling he knew why Erza was here. 'Crap! I'm not yet ready to face her after all,' he exclaimed, getting cold feet. But realizing that if he ran now, he would just be delaying the inevitable, he decided to confront her about it now while they were still alone.

'Guess there's no better time than today.' Natsu thought, feeling hopeful.

Steeling himself, he walked up to his house and greeted Erza.

"Yo!" Erza lamely called out.

"What's up?" Natsu waved back.

"I came to talk." Erza responded seriously.

Seeing Erza's straightforward attitude, Natsu suddenly got cold feet again.

"About what?" Natsu chuckled nervously, still trying to pretend like nothing happened.

"Natsu, I'm serious. Drop the act." Erza said to make sure there is no room for Natsu to evade her.

"Whatever do you mean..?" Natsu averted his eyes from her, still attempting to play it off.

"Natsu…" Erza growled to intimidate Natsu.

After a few seconds, Natsu finally gave in, "Alright."

This made Erza smile.

"Good, now let's talk about what you said before you ran off a few days ago." Erza got straight to the point to leave no room for Natsu to evade the topic.

"I like you. There, is that what you wanted to hear?" Natsu said quickly, embarrassed.

"Not good enough. Be serious this time." Erza said, despite blushing she still maintained her composure.

"What do you want me to say?" Natsu said flusteredly.

"…" Not saying anything and looking at Natsu with eyes that bore holes into his face, he decided to start from the beginning.

"Well… Since we were kids, I've always felt weird around you. I just didn't know what it was back then, but as I grew older, that feeling in my chest became even stronger. I had no idea what it was, but whenever I'm around you, or even when you're just looking at me, my chest got tighter." Erza listened attentively, her arms crossed and her eyes telling Natsu to continue.

"So I asked Mira about it, and she said I liked you. I didn't understand it at first, but when I thought about it, I think the reason why I always fought with Gray, caused trouble, and ask you to fight me was because I wanted you to pay attention to me." At this revelation, Erza's eyes widened. Strangely enough, it wasn't Natsu's confession that really surprised her, it was the lack of response her heart was making.

"Then when I saw you cry at the Tower of Heaven, I just lost it. And when you were about to sacrifice yourself, I realized that I can't live without you. So when you were getting sucked in by the tower, I didn't care if I died as well. I took a gamble and jumped in after you, because I knew I couldn't live without you." Without realizing it, tears started to form in Erza's eye. Hearing Natsu's heartwarming confession touched her, but she was angry… Angry at herself because even now when Natsu was pouring his heart out for her, she's thinking about Jellal.

'I'm sorry, Natsu.'

"So what I'm trying to say is that…" Natsu was finding it hard to say it, but he promised himself he wouldn't choke this time. Even if Erza rejects him, then so be it. Although deep down, he was hoping she would also reciprocate his feelings. "…I love you, Erza!"

An unfamiliar thumping of her heart made Erza waver. Erza didn't know what to say, her brain just stopped working. She stood there, unresponsive for a few minutes. After Natsu finally confessed his love out loud, the awkward atmosphere around them made him feel uneasy.

'So he really does love me? But why can't I respond to him? Although Jellal's out of my reach, why am I still so confused right now?'

'Although this is my chance at love, what's stopping me?' Looking back at the times she spent together with Natsu, she understood that Natsu was definitely someone special to her. But at the same time, she didn't quite see him the same way she saw Jellal.

'I see. I've always seen him as a friend since we were kids, so this all just feels so sudden.'

Seeing Natsu look at her expectantly, Erza was pressured to come up with an answer.

'Maybe I don't see him like that because my feelings for him are stronger? I can't deny the fact that he's special to me, but…'

After a few more moments of thinking about it like this, Erza had a breakthrough and finally broke the ice.

"So you really do like me?"

Looking away from her awkwardly, Natsu answered her back, "Yeah."

"Thank you, Natsu..." hearing Erza's response, Natsu looked at Erza hopefully. Now it was his turn to be surprised upon seeing Erza cry. Misunderstanding the atmosphere around her, and thinking it was tears of happiness, Natsu smiled.

"So, you like me t-"

"…But I'm sorry." Erza interrupted him quickly, each word stabbing her heart. She looked at their feet, not having the strength to look at Natsu.

"Eh?" Natsu replied, the smile in his eyes fading.

And that's a wrap for the first chapter. I'm not really sure if I can push through with this story and finish it, but I'll try my best. For those who enjoyed this first chapter, I'll try my best to push through with this. Hopefully though, someone adopts this story so it's in safe hands. Be well!
