Selective Dementia

Eve's POV

I jolted up from a terrible nightmare that seemed pretty real to me and I sat there on a bed I don't remember or know how I got on it.

I looked around for a while and figured out that I was in a hospital room, which means something happened to me, but my mind was blank. The only thing I remember was running through the woods. After that, I don't remember anything, not even the reason in the world why I was running and in the woods.

'Oh Goodness' I said as I held my head down with my two hands supporting my head, I looked at the window and saw my family sitting outside with my brothers asleep on my mom and dad's lap.

'They're worried about me' I murmured, then noticed my dad's eyes were open, and they were staring at me

The moment he saw I noticed him gazing at me, he stood up while dropping my brother down on the chair gently and slowly walked to my room.

He opened the door and walked in, the room was decorated with white and blue, which looked calm for patients, it also had this calming fragrance that calms nerves, not like other ward where the scent of the room is covered in the drugs and medications.

"How are you feeling now ?" My dad asked as he sat next to me, calmly checking me if I was feeling unwell.

'I don't even remember how I ended up here and what happened to me plus I don't know I am feeling right now, all I know is that am confused' I said in my mind as I kept quiet for a few minutes, looking at my dad.

Who was also looking at me in a concerned manner

"Am feeling somewhat good now" I answered, not sounding quite sure about it, just said to make him stop looking at me like that.

"What happened to me and how did I get here?" I asked in a calm and confused manner to make him stop looking at me with those eyes, but that made the concerned look in his eyes in deepened.

He was shocked and concerned at the same time, which got me thinking he probably didn't know what happened.

"Some friends say they found you lying in the woods and brought out of the woods, that's when I saw you then rushed you to the hospital" he answered, a bit perturbed by my question.

For a few minutes I sat there thinking about what he just, and he was busy looking around the wardroom during those I was doing my thinking, it felt like he was giving me space to digest what he just said to me.

"Do you remember how you ended up in the woods, or even what you went there to do ?" He asked after waiting those few minutes, which might seem like it wasn't going to end.

"I probably went for a walk or something and got scared of an animal umm most likely something scared me while I was taking a walk in the woods and I fainted, it happens" I answered, though it was a lie.

Then I noticed him take his gaze from the clock he was looking at and turn to face me as I answered his questions, which was a sign that he could read in between the words the answer I gave him.

"Evie, if you don't remember how you got there or how you fainted, I will just leave you to get some more rest. later I'll bring the doctor to do some check up on you in any case" he said reassuringly as he walked out of my wardroom.

I just sat there watching him leave without saying anything in response other these words'mm' which didn't sound like words to me, though.

I sat there for some minutes still wondering what actually happened to me, then I remembered that I never asked my dad the identity of those so-called friends of mine he said brought me out of the woods.

'Well since they are my friends, they would either come to see me in the morning or probably be the first I'll meet when I go to school whenever I'm discharged' I wondered in my mind and muttered to myself.

I looked at the wall clock and noticed it was already half past nine at night, I was starting to get hungry, then I looked around and saw some snacks that were already by the bedside In case I got hungry.

And coincidentally, I was already hungry, so I grabbed the snacks and started eating with a glass of milk that was also on the side stool, it took like five minutes for me to finish.

I laid back in bed and stared at the ceiling before dozing off.

The next morning.....

I heard some voices while I was still asleep and quietly opened my eyes, I saw my dad with the doctor talking in low tunes I tried ignoring them and checking the time, it was exactly eight in the morning.

"She might be exhibiting symptoms of selective dementia or..." I heard these words as it came out and it was somewhat loud.

"Selective dementia!!!!?" I reacted out loud without knowing that they heard my exclamation.

They both turned to where I sat.....

MC'S Narrative

Eve sat on her and was gaping at the doctor and her father while they were talking, then heard when the doctor said that she might be showing signs early stage of selective dementia, which is rare for her age grade.

'Selective dementia!!?' she thought out loud without knowing that they heard her say it.

The moment she noticed them looking at her, she pretended to just wake up from sleep.

Yawn! "Good morning dad" she greeted then faced the doctor, "Good morning doctor" she also added while looking around and saw that her mom and brothers were no longer outside.

"Where's mom and my brothers?" Eve asked as she couldn't find them anywhere around,

"They will be back soon, they just went to pick some change over clothes for us and clean up too" the father answered.

That's when eve recalled she did need a change of clothes plus her dad was still putting on what he was wearing yesterday. " c okay I'll just lie here and wait"eve said in response.

"How are you feeling now eve dear" the doctor asks her after getting a chance to speak up because he would rather not interrupt the father and daughter duo.

The moment the doctor started talking to eve, her father left them to make some call, giving them to properly complete the check-up.

"I'm feeling better now, just need some fresh air" eve replied

"Okay , I need to do some few check-ups to be sure"says the doctor, he was putting on a black shirt and had heard his stethoscope.

He then placed his stethoscope to listen to her heartbeat for some seconds before getting up and checking her pulse with other things.

"Doctor, what did you mean by I might be showing signs of selective dementia?" Eve asked.

The doctor wasn't surprised by her question because no one will hear that stuff and not react to it, he slowly stood up because he was bending and straighten by his shirt.

"It's just an assumption it might be fright or something else, we don't know for sure" the doctor answered calmly

"And it's rare for teenagers to have selective dementia, you mostly experience trauma or make yourself to forget the pain of something that might have happened to you" he added in a very calm manner.

Eve didn't panic or react all the time he was talking, she just sat there listening to him, "but I can be discharged right? Eve questioned.

"Yes we just need your dad to sign you out, and we process the discharge" the doctor answered to her.

"Okay I'll just for a walk while waiting for them (father and the others that left), she says then got up from her bed and walked out but was followed by the doctor.

He asked to be cautious and try to remember what happened to her, then he watched her as she left with a look of concern...
