Erik got rid of Nathaniel. That prick almost killed him during the Red Palace outing and then actually tried to kill him even during a thaid attack. Some people might've said killing him might have been too much, but honestly, Nathaniel was too crazy to be kept alive.
In a few years, he might have turned into a psycho murderer, given how easily he resorted to murder.

The problem was that things didn't end there. If Nathaniel asked for help to kill him, then it was likely he talked about Erik with others.
He likely painted Erik as a rival, a threat, or the one responsible for him being kicked out of the Red Palace.
