Chapter 22

Chapter 22

"Let me out!" I protested.

He kept driving and stop from a nearby stall.

"You fear her do you?" Khai calmly spoke this time. "I can protect you from her. She won't hurt you. If she'll slap you then slap her back!" He lectured. Easy for you to say that.

"That's the problem okay! If I lay my hand to anyone, I can be expelled. Mom will take me away from here. I don't want to start all over again!" I cried. My tears fell as I clench my fist.

"What exactly is your problem! I cannot understand you if you won't tell me. What if I have the solution. What if we can sort it out!" He fired back.

Now we were shouting inside his car like those young couples.

"You don't know my past!"

"Then tell me your past!" Khai shouted.

"You don't have to know it!" I shouted to his face. "You don't care about my past!"

He looked at me. "Sam. I like you, I love you and you know that. Whatever past you're talking about. I can work it out. You just have to trust me. I can save you one more time." Khai begged. Save me.

"You don't understand Khai. Save me? And yeah about that. Whatever I was indebted in you for being my savior, I can pay by money but I cannot pay my love. I don't want a relationship. I don't want you. It's better to stay away from each other." I explained. "Open the door," I pleaded as I turn away from him.

"Sam," he stopped me from getting away.

"I said open the door."

I went home and straight-wrapped myself in a blanket. What had been happening. I am not getting it right. It's getting out of control.

I thought for the second time. Reflecting, I was wrong for my words. Maybe I should apologize. I dialed his phone.

In the end, I heard the call end. He was rejecting my call. I hurt him for sure. I will just apologize, I don't want to be anyone's downfall. If he will hate me, that's okay. I closed my eyes and took a deep.

Just as a mom, came over.

"Why are you already in bed? Dinner is ready." Mom said.

"Yeah, sure," I unwrapped myself and get out.

We both walked down the stairs and took ourselves to the table. The aroma of the herb pasta hit my appetite. It was looking good. But as I began to dig, mom asked me.

"Whats with you. You looked tired and emotionless. Not your usual self. Did something happen?" She asked.

"Yeah, it's about," just before I could continue, her phone rang.

"Just a second," mom excuses herself.

I nodded and let her take the call outside.

I did not wait for her for dinner. It took her long to come back so I decided to fix the table after eating.

Mom dropped me by to school this morning. I did not tell her what was happening since she was also having trouble with her work, that's why. Don't want to add up her problems and don't need to tell her my problems, she cannot sort them.

From my spot, I can see Khai coming out of his car.

"Hey," I approached him with a greeting.

He walked past me like I did not exist in his view.

I did not dare to run after him since Kerry's car came over. I had to walk fast and look for Norton instead.

"Hey," Norton greeted. I flashed a smile. "Heard about yesterday. Are you okay?" He asked.

I nodded. "I felt sorry. I think I hurt Khai."

"I don't want to hear it. Let's just go inside," Norton said. I know he doesn't want to hear anything about Khai. They don't get along with each other.

I stayed with Norton the whole day. If I'll separate, the girls will haunt me. I don't know what they'll do this time.

Just as dismissal came. Norton insisted to ride with me but I stopped him. So he took his bike and went home after me.

I held my bike and started paddling home. Just as I was near my house, a car blocked my way.

"Khai?" I blurted. He is just a couple of meters away from my house post. Dude! Why does he show up here?

He went out and there he stood beside his car. I paddled more to reach him. I don't know why am I nearing him like seriously, I want to stay away but my feet do not cooperate.

"Hey, I just want to say sorry." I apologized.

But he stood straight while his hands pocket in his pants. Then Khai looked at me daringly. I had the time to shut my mouth and gulped the remaining liquid in my mouth.

Khai peeped at his phone. Just a simple click on the power button and pocket it as fast as he saw what he saw that I saw nothing he saw. My eyes moved from left to right. Then back to him. No, he is looking at me too.

"You have been blocking my way for about five minutes." He said.

I was so embarrassed to face him like this. Like what's his problem though, he was the one who stopped when my bike was approaching and he even gets out that's why I approached him.

I could've paddled on the left side of the road considering it's a one-way road and let him pass. Dang, it!

"I- uh-" I was left silent after he ignored me for the second time and went inside his car. Just need to get out of here. Whatever!

But wait it is a one-way road alright and why is he on this road anyway? This is not his way.

Before I left his front view I decided to get down from my ride and tried to stop him from fleeing. Made my hand a sign for him to get out.

"What are you doing? Planning your death?"

"What are you doing here?" My heart races as to raising a question even though he was not in the mood to talk to me. I can feel it. We are like strangers at this moment.

"Mind your own business," he answered.

Oh. What a slap to me!

It hurt me. How the fuck did he change like this. Just wow. "Okay fine. Whatever!" I fired back. Then I rode my bike and out of his sight, I made it to my house.

I turned back to see how his car went away. Felt something I never felt before. It was rough in my heart to hear him not care about my talk. Does he hate me this time?

Still, I carried myself inside the house. Mom was just cleaning the table. "Mom? Did someone come?" I cared to ask just for confirmation.

"Yeah, Khai came."

"Oh!"

"Oh?" She repeated my answer but with a higher tone than mine.

I smiled at mom. "Nothing. What did he say?"

"Nothing less. Nothing more. He just dropped by to tell his goodbye," mom said.

"A goodbye?" Now it was me repeating her words with higher intonations.

Mom looked at me doubly. "What? You don't know?" Mom said. Wtf is she talking about? What goodbye?

"Mom, what is it. Tell me directly. I cannot relate to what you're saying!" I am raising my voice, starting to get annoyed as if it's mom's fault to whatever this is.

"Why are you yelling at me?" Now, mom feels she was disrespected.

"I'm sorry, what did he say. Wha- what is it all about?"

"Khai is flying abroad tomorrow," mom proclaimed.

"What?" My eyes looked at mom terrific. This is pure nonsense. "He's just playing with you." I tried to make it work as I think it is.

But mom curled her forehead. "No. He told me three days ago to not tell you anything about it. Because he will be the one to tell you soon."

Now, this is serious. "What! Shit!" I spout and rushed to open my bag.

I trembled to dial number by number till I reached a voicemail. 'Sorry, this number is unattended. Your call has been forwarded to--' Yet it did not finish and I ended then dialed again.

'Sorry, the number-' there the girl voice rung in my earhole.

"When did he tell you about his flight?" I asked.

"Tomorrow," mom panicked. "What? He did not tell you anything about it?"

I ignored mom and went outside while I try to dial Khai multiple times.

"Khai please pick it up!" I murmured but it kept saying the same thing. "I couldn't hear you. Please. Pick it up!"

The night advances as mom came outside to join me. "What's with you! Why do you act like someone's gonna die?"

I wiggled my head and saw the car behind her. "Come on mom, we have to go after him. Maybe I can still talk to him."

She gets back for the keys and we go after Khai. I know Khai. He is lying about tomorrow, his behavior says it all. And one more thing I have something important to say.

I cannot lose him. I can't.
