The Little Magicians

After seeing Eva's angry face, Toby gently grabbed the parrot and placed it on Eva's hand. But instead of being calm, the parrot freaked out and bit them both.

Parrot likability score: Toby 0, Eva -2.

The parrot's behavior is a variable that can change easily, so Eva's continuous efforts of chasing the bird did not contribute to a better relationship between the two. By time Eva finally cooled off and sat down giving the parrot a chance to breathe, Toby was staring at her with an expectant smile. Since Eva didn't want to deal with another round of back and forth with Toby, she started talking about the bird, just like the day before.

"Before the catastrophe happened-"

"Descension?" Toby asked cutting her off.

"Yes, now be quiet." Eva said signaling for him to stop talking.

"Before the catastrophe happened, and when everything was still alive. The parrot  species-"

"Species?" Toby asked again, cutting her off for the second time.

"Species is a group of animals of the same kind. Like us, humans are a species." She said with a sigh of annoyance while Toby nodded his head.

"The parrot species' origins were inside a rainforest. But now-"

"What is-" Toby said interrupting her for the third time, but before he could finish Eva cut him off with an outburst.

"INTERRUPT ME AGAIN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS." As you can see, Eva is short tempered, this most-likely corresponds to her age.

"A rainforest is a literal forest that gets rain. And a forest is a bunch of trees bunched up together, are you satisfied Mr. Questionnaire." Eva said angrily, ignoring this, Toby nodded.

"But now, the parrot species is basically extinct, and for some reason they aren't mentioned in textbooks." Eva continued.

"Why aren't they mentioned in textbooks?" Toby asked.

"How am I supposed to know?" Eva retorted.

"If you didn't learn it from a textbook, then how do you know so much?" Toby said looking at her with a slightly tilted head.

"Cause I've been to a rainforest before."

"Really?!" Toby asked excitedly.

"Yea, it was green, and there was a bunch of water, tall trees, and a bunch of animals." Eva said proudly, crossing her arms while sitting. Toby was a bit un-trusting at her sudden declaration, but he was intrigued by her description. Big trees, a lot of water in one place, animals, he had never even heard of things like that, let alone imagine it. Toby then looked at her proud face curiously.

"Ask away," Eva said wondering how an eight-year-old who lived underground his entire life, would react to this newfound information which is nowhere to be found.

"What's a tree?" Toby asked. Eva froze, the disbelief clearly displayed on her face. She then once again remembered, they were underground. There are no trees.

"I'll tell you tomorrow." After hearing this Toby frowned a bit, but then asked,

"What are animals?"

"I'll explain that tomorrow too." Toby gained a shrewd expression then asked his last question.

"How did you go to a rainforest? A rainforest would be above, but there are monsters above." He was especially curious about this.

"A magician never reveals her tricks."Eva said holding a finger up to her mouth while smiling. But before Toby could react she said,

"One day I will bring you to an amazing viewpoint inside the rainforest. It's nice and you'll probably like it." Toby doubted her, but he knew that drilling her for more information wouldn't end well so he just sat next to her in silence, leaning his head onto the wall. Toby then looked down at the parrot, it was feeble and looked like it would faint any second.

"Hey Eva?" Toby asked.

"What?"

"Remember when you said that the parrot needed seeds and food."

"Yea." Eva replied dryly.

Toby then took out the money that his mom forgot to take back from him.

"We could use this to buy them. And we could also get medicine for its wing." Toby said handing it to her with a smile. She counted the money and it came up to $20 (USD).

"How did you get this much?" Eva asked shocked.

"A magician never reveals his secrets." Toby said with a grin.

Although these kids have only known each other for about 2 weeks, they now have a friend-enemies relationship. I say this instead of friends, because after Toby said this, he was violently chased around town square by the belligerent Eva.
