A Quick Getaway

The streets of Rollo were in turmoil.

A small horse pulled carriage was drifting around the stone tiled roads. Crashing into small businesses. Screams and shouts were loudly resonating with the already lively business district. Some were even shouting about their cabbages?

On carriage a boy could be seen with his eyes watering incessantly. Next to him holding the reins was a teenage girl. Who seemed extremely focused on the task at hand. At the slight bend or Knick in the road she would accurately handle the reins making their travel speed extremely fast.

After an unknown period of time a dull echo followed the carriage. The boy noticing this was about to tug on the girl's shoulders when suddenly she leaned to the left and the carriage took a steep turn into an alleyway. Her bosom smacking him in the face telling him she knew.

She turned back to witness her pursuers had stopped due to their carriage being unable to fit into the small alley space. Their blue and white uniforms looked to be the local law enforcement. She sighed and looked towards the boy next to her.

"Will did you kill that man they were looking for?"

She looked at the boy's eyes. If she saw even a hint of hesitation or felt he was lying his short life would be ended.

Will gazed back at apathy meaningfully and stated in a bland tone. "No"

She waited patiently for him to continue his thought so far he didn't look to be lying.

"I was in the alley way about to be eaten by rats when he suddenly came falling from the rooftops. Seeing an opportunity, I took his wallet". He refrained from continuing letting Apathy decide the truthfulness of his words before continuing.

"I didn't know the wallet belonged to the priest or bishop or whoever it was".

Will left out the part where he ate the man's brain but he again looked at the girl who has done so much to help in the past 2 days and sighed.

Apathy looked down at Will's gloomy expression and smiled. She then rubbed his head and wrapped her arm around his head.

"Whelp kid I believe you…"

Will looked at her and his eyes beamed. His happiness was soon short-lived as she continued her sentence

"Now we're now wanted fugitives by the Church of Stella. So we need to get off this island fast. Do you know anyone who has a boat?"

Will thought back deeply before realizing he was an orphan and the only people he knew were fellow orphans or kind shop owners which were few and far between. He shook his head.

He then looked forward despondently. The Bright red rooftops of the houses of the city took a stark contrast to the scattered forest surrounding it. However, he had set his sights on the bay in the distance.

The bay was extremely busy and the port which was the largest structure on most islands thrived off tourism and exports. A large number of ships could be seen docking and departing and though far; the clear aquamarine ocean sparkled in the distance. Wills eyes lit up.

Their journey to the docks remained undisturbed and though Will seemed joyous of the fact Apathy was rather suspicious. A saying she had once heard from a fellow witch who had once came to her shop popped into her head at that moment.

"You won't live long in this world of madness if you assume all things to be coincidence. The stronger you get the more you'll realize that reality is often stranger than fiction and you may just be the fish in the well "

The clear cut features of a man stood in front of her. His black trench coat fluttered even with minimal wind. His deep green eyes looked beautiful. His face seemed a bit odd like the skin on his face wasn't his. No almost as the skin on his own body wasn't his. One thing she did know that he was the strongest person she had ever seen. She couldn't tell he was a witch because he had restrained his aura but her senses screamed danger.

Her senses wouldn't stop telling her she was in danger until he walked clear out of the alley way and into the darkness of the street. However, she stopped reminiscing and looked towards the docks and changed the direction of the cart.

Will seeing this sudden action looked at her questionably. Will could see that she had turned off into a smaller road that led to the forest. He could tell that she seemed a bit more serious than before so he refrained from asking.

A short while late the ride got a bit bumpier now that they had exited the city and were now on dirt road heading into the forest. Seeing her visibly relax Will asked.

"Hey, why are we not headed for the docks?"

She looked at him hoping he would figure it out for himself but seeing as no gears were turning in that little head of his she explained.

"Why do you think the police stopped chasing us?"

Will was perplexed by this question. He thought they stopped because they had given them the slip and were too far to catch. As if reading his mind, she replied.

"No, there are hundreds of police officers in this city and they have more than enough staff to catch a speeding cart. Don't you think our journey to the docks was going a bit too well?"

Will shuddered for a second he realized what she meant.

"It was a trap…"

She briefly glanced at him before nodding.

Will began reminiscing on the food traps that slave traders and smugglers would lay on the streets in front of orphans like himself. They used this show of kindness to try and gain their trust only to misuse it and sell them off to bidders.

"What would we have found at the docks if we went there?" she shook her head at his question.

At Loana Dock, Rollo 12 PM

Large nets built almost like trebuchets unloaded enormous boxes of supplies like food spices and other materials. The air tasted extremely salty and the smell of strong spices permeated through the winds. Sailors of all walks of life walked along the concrete dock and tourists occasionally alighted from their vessels to take pictures and explore the city.

The sounds of ships creaking into the dock was heard. This area was anything but quiet. Although a strange outfit of people were waiting at the docks near the entrance from the city.

Most sailors could recognize them but groups of tourists would occasionally stop and stare. The group however payed them no mind. Their star clad robing and the moon on their chest that would often show as the wind blew a clear indicator they were members of the main church of this island.

Behind these members were a smaller group of people sitting down on the coach area of a very luxurious carriage. This carriage was twice the size as a normal carriage and even had a small upstairs seating area if the riders wished to have a breath of fresh air. The outside was painted a dark blue and was dotted with stars and on the back was the First Quarter moon.

Rochelle sat silently in the front seat regretting the fact that she had to be here in the first place. She looked to her sides to see that Noah and Stell were each less cheerful than before.

Noah occasionally played with the stab wound in his hand and Stell looked at a flower she had reflexively picked on the way here with a bit of hatred in her eyes.

Rochelle decided to break the silence. "Don't worry about it you two, this was your first mission". Neither looked up at her but after a pause Noah's soft voice was heard.

"Second…and we failed both times". She did not try to console him as it was the truth they had two chances to recover the item but it was lost twice prompting the newly promoted Bishop to take action himself and get what he was owed.

She looked back into the carriage and from between the blinds. Crescent moon like pupils stared deeply at her before slowly fading away.
