I don’t just mean I want to live like everybody does. There are things I still need to do. People I need to see again. People I need to save. I can’t die now. I can’t allow it to end like that.
Just when it seems like the killer is about to shoot, I crouch down and lunge forward, tackling him.
He doesn’t react in time.
BANG!
The silver bullet passes over me and flies into the door to my mother’s room. I grab him and knock him back into the hall outside my apartment.
As soon as I’m on top of him, I shift. The clean clothes I’d just changed into are quickly torn to shreds. It only takes me a second to reach my wolf form; faster than any of my previous shifts. There’s no conflict between the wolf and the human about the fact that I want to live.
