Chapter 50: What Happened to Carl?

My conversation with the doctor is interrupted when someone knocks on the door to my hospital room. He doesn’t wait for either of us to answer before he enters. He’s a police officer. Older than Barnes, and in a fancier uniform.

The man introduces himself as the St. Louis Chief of Police.

The discussion over whether I’m going to leave gets put on hold. The chief asks the doctor to leave the room, and he, reluctantly, does. The chief takes a seat in the visitor’s chair.

“Hey,” I say. “Sorry I couldn’t come to the station to speak with you.”

“That’s alright,” he says. “You’ve been through a lot. You know, your attacker, he’s been telling some very strange stories. Stories about monsters.”

“Oh.” I try to affect surprise, but I don’t think I do a very good job.

“Don’t worry about it,” he says. “This isn’t the first time I’ve dealt with your world. We’re able to keep word of that kind of thing from getting out.”

“Oh.”

“Did you expect me not to know?” he asks, bemused.
