Chapter 85

The Present...

Dr. Henry, who was in the process of removing the respiratory machine-turned to look at Alex to ascertain whether he wasn't going to bare his teeth at him again. That incident had remained marked in Dr. Henry's heart. You could conclusively say that the man was scared.

When the machine was removed, Malia lost her breath for a few seconds due to the absence of the machine, but it stabilized as soon as her body sense the lack of extra aid.

Startled, Alex wanted to go to where she was but was stopped by Dawson who had grabbed his arm and asked him to calm down. He then released himself from Dawson's hold telling him that he was fine.

"So, when will she wake up?" Alex asked when Dr. Henry had started packing the machine

"After the last crisis, I have no conclusive answer" answered Dr. Henry and earning a scowl from Alex "I can't take her out of the induced coma as I had initially planned, but she might wake up within a week or a week and a half prox from now judging by how her body has reacted to the treatment."

Alex shook his head in understanding "I could do it, but it isn't safe anymore. I want her body to get used to the breathing process again instead of forcing her. Removing her from the coma will be forcing her." Dr. Henry added

"So, what do you say, Mr. Ford"

"I guess we'll have to go with waiting out on her. Are you sure that she is fine though?" Alex wanted to be certain that another crisis wouldn't arise in the night.

"I can assure you that she is fine, and you don't have to sleep in her room" Alex felt embarrassed by the statement-making scratch on his neck.

It wasn't wrong for him to be in his mate's room but for Dr. Henry to say it loud, it made him feel a little nervous.

"And just so you could be calmer over the few days that she would be remaining in the coma, I carried out another blood test alongside a few scans"

Alex let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and smiled at the assurance he was given by Dr. Henry.

As Dawson escorted Dr. Henry out, Alex moved to sit at the side of Malia's bed with a smile. He was grateful to the highest power for looking after his mate and ensuring that she returns to him in life.

He had been sleeping in her room on a sofa since that incident one week ago. Thanks to that very incident too, Dr. Henry had camped in the same house with Malia thanks to Alex who was scared of another possible crisis.

Sleeping on a sofa wasn't comfortable at all, but he wouldn't have it any other way as long as he was close to her. He rarely went to the office too. Leaving everything to be handled by Old man Eliot.

Holding her finger from beside her, he lifted them to his lips "Thank you, baby. Thank you for choosing to remain with me because I can't lose another important person. I couldn't handle living with you, Malia. Please, don't ever scare me like that again. Ok?" Alex spent practically the whole evening talking to Malia who was only still in bed. Alex could careless especially because he could see her chest rise and fall rhythmically showing proof of life. He would choose her being like this any time over her moving around because she was breathless.

A few days had passed ever since the machine was detached from the Luna; five days to be exact, and the Dr. results came out positive. Evidence that Luna was doing fine.

Alex had resorted to working from home while waiting on his mate to wake up. He didn't want to miss any of that because of work. If he was being truthful, he wanted him to be the first person that she sees when she wakes up.

As days went by one by one, Alex was continuously itching to call Dr. Henry, but he also knew that there were more days still. So they were still under the one-week or one-week and a half estimation that Dr. Henry made. That only made him put away his phone.

After ensuring that she was fine, Alex returned to his home office to catch up with some of the pending work. Yes, he had gone to the office, it took a lot for him to concentrate knowing that his mate was on oxygen at home. Hence the current workload sitting on top of his table.

He worked for two hours continuously, and only stopped when his phone rang. It was Arnold calling to remind him about some files.

Alex opened the table side drawer to pick up the files that Arnold had spoken about. He found them and pulled them out only for something to fall out. He bent down to pick it up and realized that it was an envelope.

Picking it up and saw that whatever was inside the envelope had been addressed to him. He opened it only to realize that it was a letter from Christopher.

Now that he was looking at it, he remembers Arnold handing him an envelope the day Christopher had left the country.

Hello Alex, my friend,

I know that I have no right to ask you for anything after what I did to you and your people. Leaving the country is the only thing that I could think of to reduce the guilt that is overwhelming me.

Maybe my being away could calm my heart and also leave your space to think.

I never had a brother before, and meeting you filled the void. I am going to miss you more than anything. I also know that it would be selfish of me to ask you to forget what I did, but I ask that you find it in your heart to forgive me.

I am sorry, brother. I want to be your brother for as long as I breathe, please don't forget me.

With love,

Chris

After reading the letter, Alex realized just how awful he had been to his friend. A month had passed he had yet to reach out to him. What was Christopher thinking of him at the moment? Maybe he believes that he was no longer interested in being his friend. How selfish of him.

All sorts of thoughts were running through Alex's mind; some of him beating himself up in guilt.

How could he have forgotten to read the latter knowing well enough that it was from his best friend Chris? He could look for all reasons to attach his failure, but he couldn't deny the pain that had covered him at that pain.

He was hurting and would like to believe that Christoper would understand how he felt after he found out about him being a Beckett.

Alex had been looking down at the letter when he raised his head, he was shocked by what he saw, more like who he saw. "Princess?"

Malia was leaning against his door frame for support. She had woken up in her room, but the place was silent and she moved out of bed despite her body weakness. She needed to find Alex.

"Hi, baby" Alex moved to where she was and carried her after seeing how weak she looked
