Chapter 4 - Origin

"We're going on a bear hunt…we're gonna catch a big one…" David hummed to himself, trying to distract himself from the growing tension in the air.

He knew the beast was out there, lurking in the shadows, and he couldn't shake the feeling that it was watching him from somewhere in the darkness.

The hair on the back of his neck stood on end and his grip on the pistol tightened.

Every rustle of leaves and snap of a twig set David's heart racing as he cautiously moved deeper into the awaiting wild.

And soon, he saw it. Kneeled against a tree, seemingly treating its leg of an injury, whining like a bleeding dog.

Slowly, David crept up to the beast, its back turned to him.

He knew that at any sign of danger, he could jump away, but the threat of something unknown catching him off guard kept him on his toes.

David's heart pounded in his chest as he inched closer, sweat trickling down his forehead.

When he got to a distance where he felt confident in his shot, the only worth his father gave him when they went hunting in these forests, making him know it like the back of his hand.

With the painful memory of his father's voice echoing in his mind, he took a deep breath, steadied his aim, and prepared to face the beast that could be.

But then, as if having a sixth sense, the beast turned around and David's heart stopped.

He was terrified. Well and truly stuck in place with an untold fear.

His breath caught in his throat as the face of the beast turned to meet his, the untamed fear reflecting his dread.

"This can't be real," David could only mutter as nightmare fuel incarnate lurked towards him.

"What the hell are you?!" David shouted at the beast.

It..this thing can't exist!

Has he stumbled upon a creature that has never been discovered?

Is hell real?

Is he face-to-face with a demon?

As it lurked closer towards him, David realised that he couldn't move.

The pure fear he felt halted all bodily functions.

His mind couldn't conjure a proper image as the pure primal fear prevented any type of action, mental or physical.

Why didn't it have a face?

Why is it so tall?

Why are its fingers so sharp?

With his gun raised, David couldn't even conjure the strength to pull the trigger.

As the creature loomed closer, David's thoughts spun out of control.

And then, the flaps of the creature's mouth opened and it let out a terrifying screech, akin to that of a demon residing in Hades.

"I want you to know how proud I am of the man you've become!"

At those words, David's Grandfather's face flashed in his mind, giving him a clear image of his home, the peaceful lakeside cottage.

At that, David allowed himself to teleport back him, into the bathroom where he ran away originally.

The window is still left wide open from when he ran away from the police in his house originally.

There was banging on the bathroom door, "David! Are you okay?!"

David wanted to respond, but he couldn't find the strength.

When he looked into the mirror, he should've seen what was a maturing 16-year-old. Tall, handsome, strong, happy.

Instead, he saw a 13-year-old boy.

A 13-year-old boy who was drenched in water. Cold, and scared.

And then he remembered. He remembered when he was that young and looked like that.

It was the day his powers awakened…

—————-

Snow fell outside; the sun beamed down onto the earth as it punched through the clouds.

"David!" A beautiful woman shouted, running near a frozen lake as a young boy, 13 years old, was laughing and playing on the frozen lake.

"What?!" The boy, David, shouted at the woman, "Come on Mum! Look at how long I can slide for!"

David's mother chuckled, shaking her head as she watched her son darting across the ice.

"Be careful!" She shouted at him with a happy smile on her face.

David's laughter echoed across the frozen lake as he slid effortlessly over the smooth surface, revelling in the freedom of movement his powers granted him.

However, he came to a sudden halt as he saw a baby rabbit frozen in fear near the edge of the lake, clearly not wanting to be in its current position.

David, seeing its worry, went over to it slowly, being careful not to scare it.

He extended his hand, offering a gentle gesture to reassure the trembling rabbit.

"It's okay," he said to it, "Just stay still,"

The rabbit blinked up at him and hesitantly moved closer to his hand.

In turn, David also edged closer.

The rabbit gazed at David, its dark, trembling eyes meeting his own.

At that the rabbit farted off, running to the forest and scaring David.

As he got spooked, the slippery ice made him lose his footing and caused him to slip and fall over.

The impact of his body slamming into the ice was enough to cause it to break, causing David to fall into it, the freezing water seeping into his clothes and shocking his body.

Fear seeped into his heart as the water seeped into his throat. He struggled, desperately scrabbling to find some purchase on the slick, icy surface.

Yet it was all for nought.

Right now, David was experiencing the most frightening series of unfortunate events of his life.

Just as he felt his strength ebbing away, David managed to spot a faint glimmer of light coming from the surface above.

He could just make out that it was the image of his mother.

Yet there was nothing he could do, just as the rich man looked up to see Abraham looking down from heaven, and judging him for his sins, David looked up and was helpless to reach solitude.

The water began to fill his lungs, and darkness engulfed him, his consciousness slipping away as he descended deeper into the icy abyss.

Then suddenly, with sheer dedication and will, David, with all his might, managed to escape the water.

Gasping for air as he burst through the surface, David fought against the water's pull and dragged himself onto the icy bank, his body shivering.

Well, that's what he thought happened, but instead, as he looked around and saw himself surrounded by an assortment of books, now drenched in water.

Coughing profusely, David couldn't comprehend where he was.

All he could remember was imaging the Hawkins Library, and then appearing there.

He tried to piece together how he could have ended up in the library, his mind reeling with confusion and disbelief.

Suddenly a childish scream sounded out above him, forcing David to look up and come into eye contact with Conner Krazinsky, his classmate.

"David? What the heck?" Conner exclaimed looking at his predicament.

David, wanting to get back to his mother, suddenly disappeared, leaving Conner behind with a stupefied face.

David then looked around again to see another change in scenery. He found himself standing in the middle of a bustling city square, surrounded by towering skyscrapers and honking cars.

Before getting hit by an oncoming car, his vision trembled before he looked around to another change in scenery. He found himself in a serene meadow, the sun casting a warm glow over the swaying grass and wildflowers.

"Woah!" David exclaimed softly.

He had never experienced anything like this before.

As he walked through the meadow, a feeling of peace washed over him, the worries of his previous whereabouts temporarily forgotten.

And then, he teleported once more, however this time, it was at his home.

But it wasn't.

As he looked around, everything was warped. There was a permanent grim dust that fell around him, similar to ash.

The air felt heavy, and David's heart began to race as he realized something wasn't right.

"Hello?!" He shouted, looking at the grey sky and dim sunlight.

This was wrong.

It was like everything was the opposite of what it should be.

Trees stood strong yet looked like they could wither away at a single touch. I'm the distance, bats flew in giant flocks, a giant mist floated in the sky, and as he looked around, there were some puppy-sized dogs, though he couldn't make out clearly what they were.

David's mind raced with fear and confusion as he struggled to make sense of this disturbing new reality. It felt as if he had stepped into a twisted version of his world, where every familiar sight was distorted and unsettling.

Tears began to pool as his worries became more apparent to him. Desperation clawed at his chest, urging him to find a way out of this eerie place and back to the reality he knew.

Then suddenly, he was back home. He was looking at the front door of his home.

Though, he noticed there was a fancy, black car on the drive.

Swiftly, David entered his home and overheard his mum screaming.

"You promised me, Brenner! You promised you wouldn't mess with my baby!" She shouted.

"Linda, listen to me. Please," a male voice said.

"No! He's been gone for nearly a day now! And he's not under the ice! You promised you didn't mess with anything! I haven't put up with my shit mess of a husband just so you can mess everything up!"

David had never heard his mother sound so vividly angry before.

It worried him.

"Mum!" David shouted as he entered the front room.

As David entered the room his mother turned to him and lunged at him as fast as she could.

"David, you're home! " she exclaimed, embracing him tightly.

Relieved, David hugged his mother back, feeling the tension in her body slowly ease.

It had been a wild experience at the strange place, but being back in his mother's arms made everything feel safe and familiar again.

As he looked over his mother's shoulder David was able to take in the appearance of a man with an ageing face, grey hair and a smart suit.

He seemed familiar in a way, but David couldn't quite place where he had seen him before.

The man turned to a couple of other men in suits with him, and they all quickly turned to leave, obviously being signalled by something.

David watched the three men leaving without another word, his curiosity growing as they swiftly made their exit.

"David?" He heard his mother ask.

"David?" His mother's voice warped strangely, the pitch, tone, and tempo changing slightly.

"David!"

Suddenly, the voice shouting his name was a strong, thumping voice of a male.

David blinked and found himself back in his bathroom, his mother and the man in suits nowhere in sight.

He looked up, his hands leaning on the sink, his eyes meeting his own as he looked into the mirror.

"I'm not a man to be proud of, grandfather," David said to his reflection.

He reminisced on the monster that took his loved ones life. He had been too afraid to take any action.

"I'm a-" David's voice croaked as he looked back on his hesitance.

"I'm a coward," he cried silently, as the police finally managed to break into his bathroom.

David's tear-streaked face turned towards the officers as they flooded into the room, bringing an end to the solitary confinement he found himself in.

As the sight of the policemen merged with that of his mother rushing towards him, David whispered in a silent voice,

"I'm sorry,"
