Chapter 1Chapter 1 - The Jumper

A soft, harmonious beat; a mixture of the drums and the such, floated about a small room scattered with a variety of comics and foreign titles.

"Girlll, close your eyes," A young man murmured, dancing around all the mess.

"Let that rhythm get innnnto you," they continued; their feet banging on the floor continuously.

Suddenly, he disappeared from his position with a small quake, reappearing in another small room, a kitchen, filled with cutlery and cupboards.

His dancing grew faster and wilder, his movements quicker and sharper, a wore loosely dangling across his chest while prancing about.

He quickly started preparing his morning routine of making himself and his Grandfather, Richard, a plate of scrambled eggs and beans.

It was cheap, and the man could go out and afford richer for the both of them. With his ability to 'jump' anywhere he wanted, he could treat himself and his Grandfather to any delicacy the world had to offer, anywhere in the world.

He's saving that for the future though.

He wants to live out what little life of normalcy he can attain in the town of Hawkins where no strange things ever happen.

And his grandfather, albeit he'll never admit this, was happy that his grandson, David didn't go out and commit every cardinal sin known to mankind.

He was happy he wasn't turning out to be like his father.

God knows he has the ability to do so.

"David. It's about time you woke up," the old man said, lounging on a chair, looking out of the window to the large lover's lake.

"You know I could wake up 5 minutes before my class starts and make it on time right?" David responded with a smile on his face, as he flipped the eggs in the sizzling pan. "But I couldn't leave you hungry, Grandpa,"

"Bah! Like I couldn't go out and catch a fish for myself and cook it up. You're a man, not a housewife, why do you keep bothering with all this nonsense so early in the morning?" Richard retorted, "I don't hold the Hawkins record for biggest fish catch for no reason!"

David chuckled as he turned down the heat under the pan and walked over to the chair where his grandfather sat.

"How about I take you fishing today, Grandpa? " David suggested with a knowing smile.

"That's more like it," Richard smiled back at him.

The two shared a warm smile, enjoying the thought of spending the day together. They both knew that despite their differences, their bond was unbreakable.

They had to put up with each other after both of David's parents were no longer able to stay with him.

His mother, Richard's daughter, was in a freak plane accident no one was expecting after she left for important work.

His father…jail time for domestic abuse for another 10 years.

David looked at his grandfather with a deep sense of gratitude, realizing they were each other's source of strength in the absence of David's parents. The memories of his parents' absence weighed heavily on David's heart, but the love and support of his grandfather gave him the strength to face each day.

David walked away, back to the sizzling pan as he smelt the aroma of the food getting stronger.

For a moment though, he stopped, looking at a family photo of Richard, looking as old as ever, carrying an extremely large fish, being helped by a man who looks like a man older David.

And then David, a little boy, on the shoulders of his mother, who seemed surprisingly strong for her stature.

However, there was a rip in the photo, that only revealed half a man, as his torso and face were ripped away.

"LOVERS LAKE LUCK" the frame was titled, commemorating David's granddad's record-breaking fish catch.

He missed seeing his granddad so happy like that. After his mother's death, his granddad wasn't the same. That, coupled with the shell shock after fighting in WW2, stationed in France, Richard found it difficult to even hear loud noises without tensing up and needing David to come and calm him down.

David often found solace in the kitchen, the familiar scents and sounds offering a sense of stability and calm, something that he often needs when he needs to calm his kleptomania.

If the police searched his attic, they'd find an assortment of objects that seems extremely odd for a 16-year-old to own who doesn't even have a part-time job.

David finished putting their breakfast on the plate and brought it over to his granddad.

"Okay, I've gotta go to school Gramps, and I'm gonna be heading out for that search for Will Byers as a volunteer tonight, so I won't be home until late!" David said walking out the front door, leaving Richard to his own devices.

He waved goodbye, knowing that his granddad was safe and content, at least until his return.

David could just find a photo and jump to his high school, but that whacko 'Crazy Conner' has been all up in his shit recently and he's being much more careful, he was there when he first jumped after all.

Eventually, the day took its cycle and David found himself standing alone in the woods, the moon casting an eerie glow on his surroundings.

"Wonder where that kid ended up…" he wondered to himself, nearing the fate that led to his lakeside home.

It was all that was left for him and his Grandpa after his mothers 'accident'

"When I've finished taking care of Granddad, I'll find out what they did to you, Mum," David murmured to himself once more, reminiscing on how much he misses his mum.

As David neared the front door to his house, a loud BANG resounded out, alerting David to where their home shed would be.

David crouched slightly, peering into the dark and dense woods, a shiver running down his spine as he thought about what might be lurking.

"Grandpa!" He shouted in a whisper, remembering that any loud noise made his shell shock act up.

"Grandpa!" David shouted as he slammed his front door open.

He looked around frantically, not seeing any sight of Richard in the dark home.

He quickly fumbled for the nearest flashlight and switched it on, casting a bright beam through the dimly lit living room.

"GRANDPA!" David shouted once more.

After not receiving a response, he decided to run to where he thought he heard the gunshot.

The shed.

As he rushed through the house, he noticed that the back door was wide open and many items were in disarray, including the missing rifle that should have been mounted on the wall.

BANG!

Another gunshot sounded out as David quickened his pace.

Once David arrived at the back door, he went outside to see a ruined shed and rubble scattered in all directions.

"GRANDPA!" David screamed rushing towards the shed, as a large figure, almost like a bear, appeared to rush into the forest, limping and injured.

David's heart raced as he approached the shed, fighting against a wave of dread and uncertainty as he looked down.
