Preparations for battle

"What was that just now? That was weird." Byeol muttered. He didn't feel like driving right now, he felt mysteriously restless. After Norma used her ability on him he felt something waking up inside him.

And so he flapped his wings and flew up.

He kept on flying upwards, trying to see the limits of both his speed and height. He felt some kind of resistance once but he pushed himself and suddenly as if freed from something his speed increased exponentially.

He suddenly slowed himself after realising that he had flown a lot higher than he wanted to. He could almost see the entirety of the Yellow Sea from this height.

He thought of returning home but he didn't feel like it. He flapped his wings harder and faster. The sky was completely clear without a single cloud in view and from his location the stars were even more clear than at the surface.

He gazed at the stars but his attention was drawn towards a star which was shining especially bright. He felt a sense of familiarity and longing with that star.

He was so immersed in staring at the star that he didn't realise how the area around his heart started glowing.

Byeol returned to his home at 4 o'clock. His house was a storied mansion with a large garage and garden.

He felt surprisingly rejuvenated after spending the entire night staring towards the sky.

He opened his phone which he had switched off. Suddenly he was bombarded with messages from both his parents and his friends. He started by calling his mother.

"Hello? Mother, what happened?"

"Where were you last night?! I tried to call you so many times!"

"I was a little busy. Why?"

"What? You still haven't seen the news?"

"Hmm? The news? No, wait a second. I am checking it."

Byeol switched his television on and navigated to the news channels.

[Breaking News! An S-Rank gate has formed over Santa Maria. Evacuation Orders have been issued and people have been already made to evacuate to shelters.]

"S-Rank Gate?!" It was a surprise to everyone in the world as the highest rank gate that was ever ranked till now was A-Rank. But after seeing the image of the gate, everyone could tell that it deserved the S-Rank classification. The entire sky over Santa Maria was completely covered by a huge red coloured circle which continuously emitted huge amounts of mana.

[The Government of the USA has promised a huge sum of money for any and all S-Rankers that join to defeat the monsters of this gate. Till now almost 50 S-Rankers have agreed to join the cause.]

"Are you going, darling?" His mother asked him, worried that he would also want to go.

"Nah~ They have already got almost 50 S-Rankers. I don't think anything can last against so many S-Ranks. Plus if my knowledge is correct then the Americans have some exceptionally great Hunters."

His mother exhaled the breath that she unknowingly held in. She was relieved hearing her son's decision.

"Okay I will be informing your father. Goodbye, darling."

He disconnected from the call and decided to call his friends.

"Don't you think these will be enough? We've already hired more than 90 S-Ranks and we've crossed the limit of our budget long ago. Do you think the Government is going to approve of using so much money?" A woman asked a man. The woman had black hair and black eyes. She wore a business suit and white shirt and a black skirt.

The man she was talking to had orange hair and orange eyes. He was wearing a white shirt and black trousers. He had a haggard appearance as if he hadn't slept in ages. He was busy trying to contact every single person he believes will be helpful in containing the gate.

"I don't care if they approve or not. It is the first S-Rank gate in the entire world and we don't know what kind of monsters might be released."

Suddenly the telephone on the man's desk started ringing.

"Hello?"

""The gate is opening."" The voice on the other side sounded grim, which was understandable after seeing the size of the gate.

The man switched on his television and saw the footage which showed the gate the size of a dozen city blocks. The gate started releasing hundreds of black and red coloured creatures.

"Can you zoom in on those creatures?"

"He asked his secretary who paused the footage and zoomed in on one of the monsters exiting the gate.

"Are those… D-Dragons?" The man asked fearfully. Dragons were usually bosses of the higher end of A-Rank Gates and this gate is releasing them by hundreds.

"Tell all the S-Ranks to attack immediately! It doesn't matter if civilians are caught in the crossfire. We need to keep them contained in Santa Maria. Even a single one escaping can increase the casualties by thousands!"

The man shouted towards his secretary who immediately passed the orders to the S-Ranks.

Right below the S-Rank gate, hundreds of hunters were standing looking upwards. Out of them several dozen were S-Ranks with the rest being all A-Ranks or B-Ranks.

At the forefront were a few S-Ranks. One of them was an extremely tall man with blonde hair and a small goatee. He was not wearing any kind of armour as his skill negates the need of any.

Beside him was a Chinese man with long black hair tied in a ponytail. He had two large swords sheathed on his back, his hands ready to take them out in a moment's notice. The third man was an American with wavy brown hair and a muscular but lean figure.

The fourth man was an Indian. He was tall but looked quite short in comparison to the people beside him. He was dark skinned and had curly black hair. He was holding a huge staff in his hands.

The last man was Brazilian. He was also dark skinned and had long black hair tied up in braids. He was holding a large spear with the tip pointed upwards.

All five of them were silent. Their eyes glowed yellow for a split second as they witnessed the monsters being dropped from the Gate.

All of them prepared themselves to fight a battle to the death against the Dragons.
