Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Who knows who invented this saying. But even though it mostly pertained to how no anger could compare to that of a woman betrayed or rejected in love, Zhang Mei Xing's case seemed to apply to this as well now.
This was after Zhang Mei Xing read the latest message on the user interface. It indirectly said that she should know her place. After pondering about it for a minute or two, the woman realized something important and perhaps, because things had been bottling up within her and she could no longer contain her emotions.
A month. These two words just flashed across her mind because of the reminder.
She became enraged, she even started swearing profane words blatantly.
Yup, Zhang Mei Xing momentarily lost her mind.
The heaven and various gods were her targets, all gods she knew from Chinese mythology to Roman mythology were mentioned alongside words that only shrews from the marketplace would utter.
However, Zhang Mei Xing's anger was not unfounded. The feeling that she had wasted time for something she did not want to do and something she did not know she had to do was not pleasant at all.
"Even if you guys are gods and above all, damn youuuu!!!!"
"How dare you just casually decide a person's fate?!"
"And me… Why the hell am I summoned and involved in this mess if, in the end, I can't even do a thing?!" More swear words poured out from her.
This was her biggest source of displeasure.
Look, for more than a month she had to talk to herself while following a person she didn't know. In fact, even now, she was more like talking to herself as she had no idea whether there was somebody from another dimension listening to her. But Zhang Mei Xing still shouted out her grievances.
She was a normal person and it was easy to get lonely once one realized that no one could see them, talk to them, or sense them even though they badly wanted to be seen, talked too, and discovered. Gosh. So what was the purpose of all of this?
Test? She was nothing but a mortal. What right does she have to pass judgment on others?
And even if she got lucky to be chosen among the hundreds, if not thousands of reincarnators, did she ask for it? Or agree to it?
"Huh? So gods are brainless beings who do things without rhyme or reason?"
"Cheap! Low! I am. So. Enlightened!!!"
Each syllable that came out of her mouth were yelled above with her balled fists waving like she was punching some against invisible enemies. Or perhaps, she was imagining the statues or images of the gods she knew as the target.
However, when the venting ended, the girl went quiet and silently stood in the lonely space, she looked up to the ceiling from the scene of the Xiang Linxin and the guard engaging in a minor argument.
After a few minutes of silence, there was only one thing she agreed with the reminder. This whole thing was not real.
"Meet me." The words spilled out from her, icy. If she offended anyone with her prickly attitude that was not like usual, better then. That might force someone to appear before her.
Finally, her sudden outburst seemed to have yielded an excellent result as the user interface lit up, its sapphire glimmer like gentle moonlight that shone on her face.
"Now what?" She barked.
A keyboard then got presented to her.
…
"Liu Yang, you go see the newbie."
On a terrace that was seemingly floating above the clouds, there was a voice that rang by the ears of a handsome young man.
The latter raised his left brow as his forehead creased. "Why?"
The person who spoke materialized before the male guide. Like Liu Yang, his face was so otherworldly good looking that those who would see him had a high chance of becoming instantly enchanted. One could say people from heaven were really gifted in terms of appearance. He didn't appear inferior to Liu Yang at all.
"A problem occurred. I didn't know you can be so careless."
The man even had a memorable, heaven-like voice too. Though actually, the 'man' was a 'she'. She only wore the same type of clothing and her hair was cut short. Her jewel-like eyes stared at Liu Yang with disapproval.
"I already made a comprehensive compilation for her. I even styled it as an app, which is something popular in that world. What's the matter?"
"Liu Yang. You neglect that newbies need someone to demonstrate to them how it is done! Even if you do not do it, at least give her all the authorities and abilities she needs to get her job done!"
"The app is like a guide. And more than a month already passed with no complaint. What did I miss?"
The woman stared at the male guide intensely that after some time, the latter felt uncomfortable.
"What?" he asked, probing. He raised his right hand and purposely showed his to-do-list to remind the other to speak as to not continue wasting his time. "Say it now since I have about ten more people to check before I can call it a day."
Silence came to him as a reply. To the neglectful, Xu Zhenzhen could not be bothered to say anything more. Heaven had its rule, and the same goes for the temple.
After giving the male guide one last glance, she turned around, his figure and posture appearing as handsome as those of any other guide present.
Liu Yang too did not call her out and just shrugged. 'What a meddlesome worrywart.' He did check out the magical 'app' that he created while on his way to one of the inner buildings in the temple. To his surprise, a menu 'Customer Service' suddenly appeared there. There was no whatsoever recollection of him including it in his work. So while he was intrigued and enlightened about what he forgot, Liu Yang's face still darkened.
"I see. So Xu Zhenzhen refers to this."
The chatbox was a wall of texts, and he could feel the anger and discontent of the person who keyed the words in.
<Damn you! Answer me!>
<What does it have to be me???!!! What help can I offer if even an evil spirit could not see me?!>
<Guide?! Should I refresh your memory about its real meaning, huh? To offer guidance, one must be able to fulfill the most basic requirement which is the ability to interact!>
<Hhhhheeeeeeeeyyyyyyyy!>
<Who the hell are you! Come out! I want to bite you! I promise I'll stop before you die!>
"Rude," commented Liu Yang upon scrolling through the screen. In reality, his attitude was neglectful not only because he was busy as hell, but because he did not understand why a random mortal could be made a colleague just like that. Even so, was this really the polite and soft-spoken girl who talked to him several months ago?
Such overwhelming negative emotions was no good.
"It seems I really need to see this one to teach her what a guide truly is."
Arriving in his work station, a pure white room where he received souls for testing, he waved a hand to summon a chair.
Apparently, he still planned to finish the ten assignments before finding Zhang Mei Xing. And ten assignments would usually mean a year or so for people of the Temple.
However, the male guide underestimated Xu Zhenzhen's dissatisfaction with him.
The Temple had rules and hierarchy too. It was like a regular workplace albeit there were real places for cultivation. Conflicts were not as childish as those of humans who fought against each other for any reason possible. But when one was judged of slacking off, a colleague could forward the matter to the current leader of the Temple.
At the same time that Liu Yang was checking out the files of the new souls to be sent to him, Xu Zhenzhen had already submitted a request to meet the leader.
"Your Highness. I saw that Guide Liu Yang is freer today. The guides in the temple are few so I suggest we make this assigned mentor of Trainee 102597 hasten turning that newbie into somebody who can cope with more test examinees. The purpose is to lighten the workload of the other guides and to increase efficiency. Please make a decision."
"Hmm. Passed."
With just these few sentences, Liu Yang's fate was decided.
Just like how he teleported Zhang Mei Xing away without warning, the man just found himself no longer in the magnificent palace belonging to the Temple of Reincarnation. The stack of paper that was still faintly glowing was in his hands, but his chair had vanished.
He was suddenly in front of a woman who was too concentrated on her fingers that were dancing midair to notice his arrival.
