21 Finally, An Explanation

If there was one thing Zhang Mei Xing badly regretted, it was not that she had an outburst an hour ago which called the attention of the guide who helped her be reincarnated. But that she threw a tantrum too late, causing her to suffer homesickness longer than needed. She drowned in loneliness, self-doubt, and confusion for almost one and a half months.

Don't look at how she seemed so devoted in following after Xiang Linxin liked an obedient guardian angel. In reality, there was just no other choice but to do so. Deep inside her, her inner demons were on the verge of success in turning her crazy.

"Mister please let me just tell this to you in advance. My anger is genuine and I'm only being mellow now because it's you who comes over. Since I feel indebted to you."

Liu Yang sat before her. The two no longer appeared incorporeal, and they found themselves a pleasant place for a chat. In a food court of a local mall, Zhang Mei Xing had disgraced herself by ogling for actual food and touching real items like it was her first time seeing them. She looked on the verge of crying, moved by the fact that she had finally regained her earthly body.

If there was one word that could describe her now, nothing would fit more than 'vulgar'.

As she munched on the burger in her hand, her fingers from time to time tracing her chin and lips for sauce, the male guide before him send her a look of disapproval. However, he chose to not address that as there was a more important matter.

"I was ordered to come to teach you about the ins and outs of being a guide." He began. Then remembering what the woman just complaint about, he continued, "It's just a month and a half. Trainee Guide Zhang, please conduct yourself properly. Your reaction and speech before was so unbecoming of you."

"Unbecoming?" She lowered her head a bit.

Zhang Mei Xing noticed the change in the attitude of the person before her. In all honesty, this was her first time seeing the real appearance of the guide and the impact was so much much greater than when he was still just a pair of a white dress shirt and pants floating in the air.

The first time she noticed his presence, she felt like she was about to melt under his stare. She froze and only wanted to look at him for a whole eternity. In fact, even now, although she was a woman who did not lust much after beauty, her heart was shaken and she just couldn't help but harbor admiration towards the guy.

Of course, she was still feeling aggrieved from the treatment she got, so she immediately sobered up and then confronted the person about it. This was how she ended up appearing in this foreign 'test' world with a true body. Yep, finally, she was no longer a floating ghost that no other ghosts see.

As for the behavior of this person. She remembered that he was so welcoming of her in that white space. He was patient with her, talked to her like a friend, and seemed to be filled with a good aura that would make one's soul relaxed. Given his current expression and attitude, was he merely faking it?

'So this hottie has an outside-work mode and a customer service mode?'

'Or is that kind of attitude required when meeting successful examinees.'

Zhang Mei Xing nearly raised a brow. Being unknowingly transformed into a guide seemed to have raised her courage to an impossible degree. Although the other party had a higher standing than her, she did not cower. In fact, toward what this impossibly handsome guide just said, she had to summon all her will and self-control to not glare at him.

"So I was showing improper behavior?"

His words still ringing in her mind, Zhang Mei Xing said with a smile that did not reach her eyes.

"What do you think?"

"Guide Liu. I just want to remind you of one thing. In my recollection, I never signed up for this and was never briefed about this guide job thing. Even now I still feel like being trapped in a space that could not touch my own reality nor this fake reality is a punishment that I don't deserve."

The two looked at each other. Zhang Mei Xing lowered her eyes, no longer finding the burger as appetizing as before. "For a mortal like me, specifically for a member of a social specie like me, spending one and a half months in such a condition... It's almost a miracle that I did not go crazy."

The guide frowned at her words and replied, "Trainee Guide Zhang. I think this is all just because you haven't been taught of what happened and what should happen from now on."

"Yup. I'm lost. So I'm all ears now. Mister. I know my place, that I'm just an insignificant person in this boundless universe. So if you will finally enlighten me of what I should at least know, I would be eternally grateful."

Liu Yang knew he was quite in the wrong this time. Servants of the Temple of Reincarnation were not machines, after all, so they could sometimes have lapses in their judgment. But they were also people who would not shy away from admitting their fault.

"I have to ask for your understanding beforehand then. Let's move as we speak so you won't be too far away from your examinee." He said.

To which she nodded. "I have no problem with that."

She fetched her coffee and put the last piece of burger into her mouth. They then stood up and walked side by side.

People could see them now and… they ignored them. The guide amazed her as he instantly shuttled both of them to what he called the Static World. Now no one would see his appearance and make a fuss about it.

Zhang Mei Xing thought the ability was amazing, so if ever she remained as a guide, at this part her adaptability was once again showing, she told herself to make the man next to her teach him this useful trick.

"I have mentioned it to you before, only people with interesting death circumstances have a chance of getting noticed by higher beings."

"Yes."

Some time already passed and the man had explained to her quite a lot of things, starting from the origin of the so-called Temple of Reincarnation, its mission, and the type of worlds that existed.

"Your story doesn't qualify, in all honesty." He said blatantly which made her dumbfounded.

Now they were back to the living world and were inside an elevator going to the floor where Xiang Linxin, the examinee, lived. The woman had already gone back from the place where the blackmailing and one-night stand happened.

Zhang Mei Xing was silent for a while. But she was not offended by what Liu Yang said since her life had truly been without many ups and downs. In her mind, it made sense now.

"Since I don't qualify, the reincarnation then must be a coverup. What makes your Temple decide to suddenly snatch my soul from the Underworld and make me your guide?"

"Our temple." The other promptly corrected. "And I don't know. You're just chosen. About the reason, I am not qualified to know."

"I see. So there's a hierarchy there too." Zhang Mei Xing bowed her head and asked in a low voice. "… Can't I not do this?"

All he did was look at her.

She once again asked, "So my reincarnated status will be revoked otherwise?"

"Glad that you know. Trainee Zhang. You're one of the rare trainees who could also live a normal life in your original plane. What you have is something many people would die for. This work doesn't even have that much risk. Please don't be too greedy."

The woman turned gloomy and she went silent for a moment. The guide took it as a sign to speak about other things that she should know.
