The bridge shook as I stood, trying to catch my breath. Alas had disappeared, but I knew he wasn't far. Suddenly, I heard a sharp sound and saw a dagger flying toward me. I ducked just in time, but then a heavy chain belt swung at me, hitting my stomach. The impact knocked the wind out of me, and I nearly fell off the bridge. I grabbed the railing, hanging on for dear life.
Alas appeared, smiling cruelly. He grabbed my hair and pulled my head up. "If you had joined me, you wouldn't be facing this," he sneered
I spat in his face, angry and defiant. "I'd rather die!" I shouted.
Alas wiped his face, looking annoyed. He grabbed my chin roughly, making me look at him. "How old are you, Beatrice?" he asked.
"It's none of your business!" I snapped.
He tightened his grip, his voice turning cold. "It is my business. You're just 14, but you're already so grown-up."
