May is a cry-baby

"No way. Now did I lose even though I-" May stopped, realizing that she was about to admit to cheating.

"You know, May," Her opponent said with a sweet smile. "When you try to peek at my cards, I can see yours."

"You saw…" May said, puffing her red cheeks indignantly. "Dannie, you meanie."

Her opponent, Dannie, laughed and, although she tried to resist, May couldn't help but join in.

"I want a rematch." May said, when she had calmed down.

"I'm fine with that."

"Hey, can I play too?" May turned toward the unfamiliar voice.

It's none other than the smiling and energetic girl you and I know to be Steph. She leaned so close to May that the two blondes could clearly see the patterns on each other's eyes. By the way, Steph's were a wild green colour and May's a calm blue.

"Yeah, of course you can." Despite having never seen her before, May pulled Steph beside her, and the pair now sat so close that they were touching arms. "You're on my team."

"So, what are we playing?"

"Sevens." May replied. "It's pretty simple."

"C-can…" A little voice said, and the three girls turned toward the tall girl that pronounced it.

"Want to play too?" Dannie asked gently, patting the space beside her on the bench. "Come on, you can be on my team."

"L-Linda?!" May said, shooting up from her chair. "No, I want Linda, no fair…"

"But you already have one teammate, wouldn't it be mean to switch?"

"M-mean…" May said, tears started to fill up in her eyes.

"Hey, don't cry." Steph said, patting May's head. "I don't mind switching with Linda."

"N-no! I'm really sorry." May said, suddenly taking a hold of Steph and bawling. "I didn't mean to be mean. Please, stay on my team."

"It's okay." Steph said, calming her. "I'll stay with you as long as you need."

Meanwhile, Linda, who didn't quite know how to behave in most social situations, had stood stock still until Dannie waved to her. Linda slowly walked over and took a seat beside Dannie.

"Don't mind May." Dannie whispered to Linda. "She's a bit of a cry-baby, that's all."

"I'm not a cry-baby." May said, dabbing her eyes with a sleeve and sniffing. Then, taking a deep breath and blowing out through her mouth, she sat up and began to deal out the cards.
