Doors To Parallel Worlds

The credibility of this news remained high, as no one understood better than Max the impending disaster Sentinel could unleash upon the world. However, details about the project were likely in the early stages of development, guarded by strict secrecy.

"How did you come across this information?" Max inquired.

Esme explained with a smile, "After our last separation, we started investigating if the Hound Project had truly been eradicated. While the project was terminated, the human actions against Mutants persisted. Many Mutants from resettlement centers were swiftly relocated, and our focus led us to a convoy. A high-ranking executive in that convoy had information about a concentration camp."

"Their destination was a safe house, but Sophie went in to pinpoint the exact location of the concentration camp. Phoebe accompanied her to maintain a safe distance and relay information when necessary."

"Are you using yourself as bait to gather information? Did this strategy work last time? Also, being a Trinity, even if your telepathic abilities are suppressed, you can communicate through your hive mind. Aren't you afraid I won't assist?" Max questioned.

"Last time was a genuine accident. It was that incident that inspired this approach. When Mutant lives are at stake, you won't stand idly by," Esme clarified.

"I am a mercenary."

"If Mutants are extinct, who will hire you? Humans? You needn't worry. If Mutants are gone, only you and your team will be left. Is that the life you desire?" Esme reasoned.

"Whether you accept it or not, you're viewed as a hero by many Mutants now. With the disappearance of X-Men and Magneto's Brotherhood, they believe only you can save them."

"Don't try to put a heroic label on me," Max shook his head.

"I know you don't want to be a hero, and you're not one. But if you dismantle the concentration camps and rescue Mutants, they'll be willing to pay any price. Don't you want to expand your squad? Rally everyone to your cause?" Esme urged.

"This could be considered an advance payment." Esme handed Max a diamond worth several million.

"You're going all out for Mutants. But remember, you can't use your abilities without my permission," Max stated, watching as Esme stored away the diamond before turning away.

Esme smiled and followed. Max wasn't moved by her words; it was the diamond that resonated with him. He didn't want to witness the impending catastrophe, understanding its impact on both Mutants and humans. What good was Max if he could only protect himself in a world without a future? Additionally, any suspicions he held towards Esme during the Hound's planning phase translated into a lack of trust now.

Max didn't believe that Esme or the Cuckoo were truthful. There had to be a motive or calculation behind their silent sacrifices to save Mutants, sparking Max's curiosity.

Yukio and Lauren were genuinely surprised when Max brought Esme back again.

A sizzling sound echoed in the room, and the portal flickered as Blink emerged.

"I just got back."

"Lauren go fetch Viper. Blink, I'll assist you in building the doors of the soul, ensuring your secrets remain hidden." Max said as he helped Blink construct the doors of the soul.

Esme curiously inquired, "Is this door of the soul the same as yours? Can I try it?"

"Yes," Max affirmed.

Esme's eyes sparkled with interest as she examined the fluctuating Ability. After a moment, she shook her head slightly and remarked, "Certainly, you can't see anything. How did you do it?"

Max, maintaining a mysterious smile, chose not to explain.

Shortly after, Lauren and Viper emerged from the laboratory. Max gathered everyone in the living room and shared Esme's curiosity with them.

"The most annoying is the Blink," Esme added.

Max reflected on the challenges Mutants faced, thinking the Hound Project's end would improve their situation, only to be confronted with the Sentinel project.

"How many plans does humanity have to deal with Mutants, and when will we be able to live peacefully?" Viper sighed, voicing a sentiment shared by many.

"There will be one day," Max reassured softly.

In his heart, he pondered the prospect of altering the future. Despite the changes apparent in a reversed future, Mutants would never truly be treated equally. In this world, they were perceived as the only conceivable threat to humanity.

Yet, in a world like that of the Avengers, where super-powered individuals, mechanical geniuses, gods, aliens, and more coexisted, Mutants weren't the sole threat. The complexity of challenges differed in such a world.

In contemplating fairness and moral judgments—distinguishing between good and evil, unlike the current world where Mutants face hostility and extermination—Max pondered whether it might be possible to access another realm.

Could the development of the Door-Door Fruit enable the opening of doors to parallel worlds?

These musings led Max to consider the broader implications. If the Door-Door Fruit continued to evolve, could it usher in the possibility of traversing into an alternate reality?

However, Max quickly refocused on the immediate challenge—reversing the future. In the movie, Professor X would inevitably find a solution to alter the course of events, a crucial endeavor to safeguard Mutants. Yet, the success of such a reversal posed an enigmatic dilemma.

Would the world simply reset, erasing the experiences and events, rendering his current existence obsolete?

This uncertainty made the prospect too perilous.

"I can't allow the future reversal to succeed."

"Or, the Sentinel project must fail!"

"What's on your mind?" the group inquired as they noticed Max lost in thought.

Shaking his head, Max replied, "It's nothing; I was just contemplating something else. In any case, we're awaiting news from Sophie and Phoebe before deciding our next course of action."

"By the way, how's Lorna?" Max asked Blink.

"Other than some material shortages, she's doing okay. I just sent a group of people away. They can take a temporary break," Blink reported.
