Everything around Charlotte was slowly turning dark. She gripped Alexander's hand tightly as if trying to save herself from drowning. "It's too painful!" she screamed while tears fell from her eyes like a waterfall. By her side, Alexander told her words that would calm her down, and she nodded subconsciously. 

The doctors arrived at the scene and examined Charlotte. They injected a dose of pain reliever into her IV drip. Alexander did not leave Charlotte's side but asked his secretary to transfer all his work documents to his study. The room was immediately cleared as he ordered.

When Charlotte's body was numb from the pain, the doctors hurriedly studied her condition. Several tests were conducted. But at the end of the day, they could only conclude that it has something to do with her recovering some of her memories. But for Charlotte, who was still conscious and listening, the pain she was feeling might have a connection with Charlotte Magnus having sealed memories and unlocking them.

Alexander watched as Charlotte slept peacefully beside him. He laid a kiss on her forehead and sighed in distress. 'Wife, I got you back, and for that, I'm happy. But at the same time, I don't want to see you suffering. If I can bear the pain, I will carry it all for you.'

Charlotte slept for three days, worrying Alexander, but her condition was visibly stable and improving. The doctor advised Alexander to move Charlotte's sleeping body to a place where she could recover better. So, the family drove back to the old mansion. Alexander's family welcomed them back.

Louis was sent to accompany his great-grandfather while Alexander talked to his mother, Serena. Alexander stood by the window, watching his son and grandfather go fishing in the artificial pond built behind their mansion. The area was filled with freshwater animals, and the old man usually enjoyed the peace and tranquility it brought.

"Mother, is there a possibility to completely erase Charlotte's memories after she gave birth to our son?" Alexander's question stunned his mother, who was leisurely drinking tea. She thought he was joking, but Alexander's face had no expression. "Mother, I don't want her to remember things that the impostor did while her soul was gone."

"Lexan, we cannot control the things she will remember. There's also no guarantee that she will remember what happened when she left for a few years during your marriage. What if what she's remembering are those memories buried deep within her childhood years? Do you think she will like it if you intervene and hide the truth?"

"But I don't want her to suffer."

"Lexan, there are only two available drugs in the market today. One stimulates your brain to remember every memory you have forgotten, while the other one helps you forget your memories and live a new life. No drug can stimulate the brain's capacity to select, remember, and forget a person's memories."

Alexander sighed again and asked, "Will the assassinations continue if those people hiding in the dark receive news of Charlotte's recovery? I want to eradicate those groups of researchers, but why stop me? I don't get why uncle would want to risk our lives by letting those evildoers live!"

"Lexan, I know you're strong enough to eradicate those researchers, but the eye of the Continental Scientific Council on the sidelines could never be ignored. I should have told you this secret earlier, but I couldn't bring myself to tell. It is something your father was not aware of." Serena took a deep breath and drank her tea before her eyes coincided with her son's.

"You kept a secret from dad? Why would you, mom?" Alexander was puzzled when his mother revealed that she was keeping a secret from his father. No matter how busy the couple was in their careers, there was no secret kept between the two, and Alexander envied them for that. They were also so loving that they tended to forget Alexander's existence most of the time and live by themselves.

Alexander's beliefs were crushed at this moment.

"Your uncle has a child kept hostage by the council. One wrong move, and that child will die. This is also the reason why your uncle decided to suffer in silence rather than face the wrath of your grandfather, who prefers to eliminate everything that may cause harm in this family." Serena then shifted her gaze to the reflection of herself on the teacup.

"Why would my uncle do that? Why did he not ask for his father's help? And why would you keep it a secret from dad? They are blood brothers, mom!" Alexander's mind was already thinking of all possible reasons for his uncle's choice. "Unless that child was illegitimate, right, mom?"

"You're indeed the smartest in this family, Lexan. Your uncle had an affair with your mother-in-law's cousin, but as you can remember, they all died in the purging of sinners. Her name was Althea Black, a junior from my university and your uncle's closest friend. Back then, it was already too late for them to realize that they loved each other."

"Is she the reason why my uncle never got married?"

"Partly. But your uncle's intention never to get married was to save his daughter and take revenge someday. He's been building up his power in the underworld society. If he hears Charlotte's awakening, he might ask for her help in this matter."

"No! I won't allow it!" Alexander's furious voice echoed in the room. "I will never allow him to get close to my wife! I will never let him use my wife's hand to clear the forces that led to the purging. Everything was his fault in the first place, and he should suffer with it all his life!"

"Don't say that, Lexan. He is still your uncle and your father's younger brother."

"No, mom! He was a coward who failed to protect the people closest to him. My grandfather was right when he mentioned that it was my uncle who brought a new girlfriend into their base, which turned out to be a hidden spy sent by another continent."

Alexander's eyes were red from frustration. "You said he impregnated his best friend out of wedlock, and he realized his feelings too late. But why would a serious man run away from his responsibilities after eating a virgin woman? Ridiculous!"
