As for the maids, she couldn't even tell which of them helped her enemies.
Other than Jiayi, she did not know who else was in with her enemies. She did not even know the identity of her enemy.
At least Si Jianyu, Zhuge Xia and her grandparents were not in on it.
Li Baozhai gave a warm but sad smile before she began eating.
"Xiao Zhai," her grandfather called out. His eyes contained sadness and worry. His white hair and pale face made him look frail. As if he was a step away from entering the grave.
Aging, like death, is not something humans can escape from.
In his heart, he pitied his granddaughter who had to live without her parents and also shoulder the responsibility as the family head.
He was too old to resume his former position and his other two children were incompetent. Therefore everything was left in her hands.
Just before he could say anything, his wife interrupted. She too hid her sadness under the guise of a stubborn old woman. How could she bear to bury her own son. Nonetheless, for her remaining children and grandchildren, she must live on.
"Do you want your parents to worry about you once they see you this way?"
Jia Ying's voice sounded harsh though her words contained care.
"I understand, grandmother. I won't continue like this anymore."
Actually this scene had happened in the past too but it didn't happen this early. It was during Qingming that she passed out after walking out of the cemetery.
She had made the same promise not to overwork herself anymore but she continued. Ignoring their warnings and pleas to rest because it was only then that she no longer thought of them.
Li Baozhai ate leisurely but her mind was far away. She was thinking of the next step. Did she really go crazy? Or was it done by her enemies? If so, how were they able to make her go crazy? How can she escape their schemes?
She decided she would go for a full body check up secretly. Although by this time in the past, everything was normal. She was yet to experience any of those things that made her feel and act crazy. It was better to be careful.
Perhaps she would not be able to eat with her family again. She did not want to either. She could not imagine sitting at the same table as those that plotted against her.
She did not have evidence against them and they were yet to do anything against her so she couldn't tell her grandparents.
After watching Li Baozhai eat, her grandparents left to let her rest. Si Jianyu was about leaving too when she stopped him, "Jianyu, how long did you work for my father?"
Granted that this was her second life, she should know how long he had stayed by her father's side but she was clueless about matters concerning him. In fact, if it didn't concern or affect the Li Real Estates in any way, she paid no mind to it. However, the one who she had ignored, who she had kicked away, died while trying to save her. This time around, she felt she had to pay close attention to him and everything around her. She wouldn't let him or anyone else die because of her.
"For five years," he stated, reminiscing. He was just a fresh graduate out of school, either her father saw his potential or he was plain lucky. No matter the case, he got the job easily and because he was a fast learner, it did not take him long to prove his worth and cement his position in the company. Thereby, making him the envy of other employees, particularly the other secretaries. A fresh graduate became the head of the CEO secretarial office before them. It said a lot about them. In fact, it spelt how incompetent they were and was like a slap to their faces. However, they couldn't go against the decision of the CEO and Si Jianyu had also proven to be exceptional so they could only bear their grievances in silence.
Si Jianyu assumed she wanted to ask about her father, it was reasonable especially after his untimely death. It was unexpected and came as a shock to everyone, more so to him. The day her parents died, Si Jianyu was meant to accompany him but he had a family emergency at the last minute so he had to bail, if not for that, he would also be dead.
Li Baozhai nodded, "How old are you?"
Although he did not know why she asked, he was glad that she cared enough to ask about him. They have been working for a few months already and she never said more than necessary to him nor did she ask about his personal life.
She added,"You must have been really capable for my father to employ you."
Li Baozhai was well aware of his capabilities. In her previous life, when her condition worsened, she had entrusted a lot of things to him. He had been with her all through her harsh experience, hiding her condition from the board and also assuring her that she wasn't crazy.
Back then, her relatives had said he was stopping her from seeking treatment and also coveting the company, and she had foolishly sent him away.
Objectively speaking, it wasn't her fault. There was evidence against him and she wasn't in her right mind. All she wanted to do was protect her father's sweat and blood. Unfortunately, she had no idea that the people pointing accusing fingers were actually the ones who coveted her position.
He responded, "Thank you, Young Miss. I am twenty-six years old"
As Li Baozhai laid languidly on the bed, she appeared effortlessly seductive. It did not matter that she was covered with a duvet, or that she was exhausted. This was in contrast to how she looked just before her death.
