To Prove Myself [2]

The next day I stood outside the city in a camp filled with about thirty other people. Tents created a strange wall around the camp with the middle filled with campfires and dirt. All of them seemed roughed up from surviving out here and clearly from past battles. Frost sat beside me as the Captain talked with the leader of the group.

"Good luck." The captain said patting me on the shoulder.

The other man stood from his desk inside the tent and looked at me carefully then at Frost.

"That thing hunt." He asked.

"We both do sir." I replied to his rough voice and question.

"Okay your uniform is inside your tent as it came here about a hour ago. Feel free to do whatever but I'm not responsible for what you do during this time." He said.

"What should I call you sir." I asked.

"I'm the commander of this unit. We're not friends so keep it simple. Now don't miss things up." He said giving me the go to leave the tent.

I put on my uniform as everyone was talking outside my small tent. It was green with gold buttons but fit surprisingly well. But I took it off putting it my bag for when I would need it. I walked out the tent as everyone was talking. I felt very out of place but I needed money I could count on.

"Hey come on over." A older man said waving to me with ships two friends.

They were all clearly in their thirties but seemed to gave off strength. I sat on the log across from them as they drank from their tin cans.

"Listen since your new let's us help you out. There aren't really any rules but don't kill each other. At night we have bets and get drunk so ignore us then. However when we actually do work stick together and protect each other." The oldest of the group said taking another drink then wiping his face off.

The day went by pretty well with us chatting and making useless deals. I got used to how things worked very quickly but found it hard to see hem fight together. The sun was in the distance as one of the people got up.

"Okay who want to fight." He said drunkenly.

"Bring it on."

"Come on where the money."

"Place a bet."

Just like that things started getting fun as they started brawling with each other. The larger man came out as the winner and took his fifteen silver.

"Hey I'm in." I said jumping up.

"Kid sit down."

"Let him join. He might win." One of the other men yelled at another.

"No weapons and no magic." The drunken fighter said.

"I'm fine with that." I said.

The slammed a fist towards me as I dodged with ease.

"Get him."

"Give me the money already."

The man threw another punch going over my head as I spinner around him.

"Hey where you go." The fighter said looking around as I stepped out of his view each time.

Frost say at the edge of the clearing laying down looking at me with what called only be called a cats grin. The man swung his whole body around and I jumped up landing my foot on his face like I was walking. I jumped up landing on the ground as he fell lazily.

I walked over and grabbed the money the guy who was collecting bets handed to me.

"Damn he stole our money." One of the men said helping his friend up.

"Hey I'm just taking what's mine." I said counting out thirty silver.

'After all I have plans and your just my first step. Those nobles don't know what's coming for them.' I said chuckling.

I walked around to the three men from today as they gave me a spot to sit as the sun went dark and the only light was from the fires.

"Nice moves."

"Hand some over."

"Calm down I know the deal." I said handing them each five silver coins leaving me only twenty from the fight.

"Okay what's your name boy." The oldest man of the group asked.

"I'm Artemis." I said proudly.

"Come guys give him our names." Another of the group said.

"I'm Joshua. Can't aim for hell but my skills with a sword make up." The red head wearing torn up clothes said.

"Zachary Walsh, but Zach for short. Hate the job, love the pay." Zachary said laughing.

"I guess it's my turn. Rollins is what they call me and I'm the leader of our small group. If you ever want to know what the frontlines looked like during the wars ask me." Rollins the oldest of the group turning out to be in his late forties said.

"Nice to meet you guys. As for me I can hit any shot with a bow and seem unable to just die." I said laughing at the end as Frost rubbed against me.

"Guess it's for bed. Wake me if needed." I said walking into my tent as Frost returned to his scroll.

'I almost feel bad. The people their protecting I'm gonna robe.'
