Chapter 24: BREATH OF FRESH AIR: NOAH

The atmosphere around the table was more relaxed than any meal I'd eaten in a long time, and as I couldn't take my eyes off Maggie, I hoped she didn't notice how attracted to her I was. It had been a long time since I hadn't wanted an evening to end. Maggie and Molly's company felt like a breath of fresh air to my soul; it would seem to my parents too for that matter.

Molly helped clear the flatware and take it to the kitchen as she helped my mom and our housekeeper to finish clearing up. It was Mom's excuse to keep Molly out of the way because she instinctively knew I had wanted to speak to Maggie.

When I suggested showing Maggie around the floodlit gardens at the back of the house, she jumped at the excuse to get out of the house for a while. Leading her outside, I showed her around the grounds; taking the long pathway to where my father had created a beautiful private walled garden; a small sanctuary filled with a mixture of jasmine, lilac, and eucalyptus perfumes.
