Entangled Souls

"I'm mesmerized by her fire, even if it is I who burns in it" Small town girl Zara is a bookworm and a student who aces every exam. She is unaware of the fact that she is an Oneiro, one to occur in centuries. She can see the dreams of both angels and demons, know their deepest desires and greatest fears. But, this blessing is a curse in disguise. Unbeknownst to her, this ability has put her in the middle of a war between heaven and hell. She is the key to find the most powerful celestial weapon ever. Heaven and hell have sent their best soldiers after her. On one hand, there is Ryan Jackson- the blue-eyed devil whose smile is enough to make her go week in the knees, and on the other, there is Jake Turner- the charming angel who is just what she needs. Before she knows, her life gets entangled in a complicated web of deceit, hurt, and love. What will she do when she learns about her power? What will she do when they break her heart and her will? How will a mere mortal stand against the might of heaven and wrath of hell? Excerpt: Ryan chuckled, “Then why are you opening up your secrets in front of the so-called bad boy?” When pleading and tears won’t help her she turned frustrated and vented out all her anger on him, “V was right. You don’t care about me. I bet, you didn’t even remember me for a second these past months. And here, despite her multiple warnings, I somehow felt you were different. I was a fool to think of you, to wait for you, to love-” Ryan’s eyes darkened at the unspoken words. She was taken by surprise when he walked up to her and lifted her in his arms. She hadn’t known what fire she had kindled by letting the unspoken words tear at him. “What did you just say?” Zara’s face turned beet red and she tried to push him away but he didn’t budge. The effort to keep his hands firmly planted on the table was visible on his face. “Complete your earlier sentence, Z” She faked an exasperated breath and completed her line, “I was a fool to think of you, to wait for you, to…to love this stupid dress.” Despite her anger and despite the harsh words, he smiled. Not just smiled but chuckled and broke into his pearly white smile that formed a dimple on his cheek. Zara sucked in a breath at seeing him smile and laugh- his smile that had the magical ability to take away all the pain from her body and heart. He asked breathlessly, “Is that what you were going to say?” (Cover is not mine, credit goes to the original creator)

Fighting the inner demons

Jake gave Zara an all-knowing smile. His eyes reflected a feeling that was a mixture of sadness and hope at the same time.

He gently turned her hand so that her palm was facing inwards and absent mindedly brushed the pad of his thumb against her knuckles. He moved his thumb over the back of her hand that bore marks of the IV. "Do you see this?" he asked, indicating the small punctures on her fragile looking skin.

He continued in the same soft voice, "Your therapist, Mrs. Brooke, dialled a few numbers and got an ambulance and a doctor to come and look at you. They had wanted to take you to the ER, and I carried you there."

Zara looked at him, surprised, "Nobody told me. I had asked mom about the puncture marks but she had said that it had been a routine visit to the doctor when I got an IV that I didn't remember. "

Jake replied. "That is because both your mother and your therapist felt that seeing yourself in a hospital with all the tubes attached to your hands and face would scare you more. Though I wonder if reading too much from that book of Principal Wood kind of re-ignited your childhood memories."

Jake had uttered the last line but he bit his tongue, it was his job to keep the world Zara kept poking at, hidden from her- at any cost.

He sighed heavily, "The doctors kept you under constant supervision. We would just sit there by your bedside trying to talk to you, the doctor had said you could hear us. But, we didn't receive any response from you. I felt so hopeless, not being able to help you, not being able to do anything."

Zara reached for his shoulder and patted him, "Oh Jake, I can't even begin to thank you."

Jake looked in her eyes and she could see his hope and admiration for her written all over his features, plain as day. He tucked a loose strand back behind her ear and cupped her cheeks.

He continued in the same soft voice, "They were going to move you to some other specialist when one day your condition began stabilising. The doctor said the medicines were finally showing their effect and that you were getting better. After consulting him, we moved you back to your room the day he felt you will be okay. You opened your eyes after an hour."

Zara felt a slow blush creep up her cheeks at the thought of being carried around in Jake's arms. "You..you have been looking after me this whole time? Is that why you guys suddenly planned a picnic?"

Jake gave a wry smile, "Yep. We thought it would be best for you to have some fresh air."

"Oh, Jake. I am truly thankful to you but I don't see why you would go to such lengths for me? There are many deserving girls out there."

At her last line, Jake pulled himself back and straightened up. He didn't reply to her question, he couldn't let her know why exactly she was special to him.

Zara could see the taut muscles in his body straining as he said, "And then you asked V as to why had she invited me to the picnic."

Zara's face was streaked with raw guilt, "I...I am sorry, J. I am messed up and I don't think you deserve me."

She then got up and hugged his back and Jake released a breath he didn't know he had been holding. "Hey, stop with all the self-blaming now. We are going to work on the issues together, okay? You and I. Together."

Zara nodded her head and Jake kissed her forehead, "I need a favor from you. Actually two."

"Go ahead"

"You will take me to two places. First, I want to visit Mr. Turner and then we can visit my therapist together, okay?"

"Are you sure you would want to visit her? It will be kind of revisiting your old wounds."

She clasped his hand, "As long as you are by my side, I think I will be fine."
