Chapter １８

I have already written my resignation letter

Then a phone number flashes. It was from the nanny at home.

I picked up the phone and my heart’s pounding rapidly from the words I’ve heard from the other end. Bad news greets me upon answering the phone.

She tells me that my mother falls off the bed and is in the emergency room!

I don’t know how I managed to find my way into the hospital, my mind’s still blank and everything was a blur. Like every passing person moves too fast or the clock moves so fast that I couldn’t process it thoroughly. I don’t where to find mom and I am lost, standing in front of the entrance when Andie came and accompanied me.

She called her nanny and asked if where they are exactly.

I ended up rushing towards the waiting room of the operating room, when suddenly nanny burst into tears when she saw me. I couldn’t help but cry with her and the doctor came towards us.

"The situation is very dangerous and requires a craniotomy, but we will try our best!"

The doctor was wearing a mask and couldn't see his face, but his voice was gentle and young. When he sees me, he raises his eyebrows, the eyes light up.

I signed the consent form in daze, paid the operation fee and sat at the benches outside the operating room. Lowering my head as I try to hide my tears from the crowd.

"Nanny, what had happened? I asked, she wipes away her tears.

Before she fell on the ground, I brought you mother to the park as per her usual routine, and gone out to the supermarket to buy groceries. Thereafter, we went home. Your mother said that she’s a little tired from the trip and wants to sleep for the rest of the afternoon. I got her to bed, and prepared her some meal for when she wakes up. I took out the trash which also took me 10 minutes to do, and when I came back the door from her room was open. There she was on the ground blood drenched her head.”

"Was the door closed when you went out?"

"Well, I close the door whenever I went out. "I took my idle time with my friends, to talk. But if it’s just taking out the trash, it’ll just take me more or less five to ten minutes.”

Nanny keeps wiping her tears.

"Florence was already in a coma when I got home." The nanny continues,

"I called 119 quickly. I am too anxious and can't bring my phone out." she starts crying again.

"Auntie, it's not your fault, don't be sad! Did you lose something at home?"

I know that she was a very responsible person she has taken care of me since I was a child, and now my mother, and she must be very sad.

"Someone went it our house. There’s no time to waste. The door was jammed open and the burglar left a mess in the house.”

"What did the police say?" Andie asks anxiously.

"Alexia, do you suspect that your mother's fall was…?"

I duck my head, and Andie nods first,

"The police should investigate." I frown.

"But I can't go back now, and I don't know where my cell phone is."

I saw nanny’s expression were depressing.

Andie volunteered to check things at home because I’m too shocked to stand.

Then we receive a call from a colleague.

Although we ask for leave today, Angel is very angry. She says that she would deduct our salary and bonus. Andie, couldn't bear it, she immediately calls Angel and says she would resign.

I just remembered that I am too anxious to leave, the computer wasn’t shut down yet, and the resignation report I typed was still in the draft box, but I’ll just only ask some of my colleagues to help shut down the computer.

But I don’t know that the moment I left the office, Bella passes by my desk "by accident" and sent it "kindly".  

So now not only does Angel know that I resigned, but even Calvin knows, because as soon as Angel receives this resignation letter, she immediately forwards a copy to the president's office ecstatically. At this moment, as I waited anxiously at the door of the operating room, the atmosphere in the president's office drops to a freezing point.

And Warren has never seen anyone made the president sad.

Calvin’s POV

I walked into the toilet and look at my reflection in the mirror and smiled. She may have several boyfriends, but she did lie to me. She said she went out with Andie, but she went to met up with the man whom she said she doesn’t want anything to do with him. They we’re seen by one of my subordinates and reported it to me.

Why did she lie to me!

Alex’s P.O.V

On the other hand, my mom’s operation was successful, and it lasted for more than three hours, and she’s now been transferred to the general ward.

"Thank you, doctor!" I smiled happily from the great news he gave me.

Well, she’s in the hands of Dr. Black, he’s the most efficient and well-rounded doctor in this hospital. He has many achievements. Therefore, there’s no need to worry because he’s an expert in his field.” The nurse smiled behind the doctor and gave comfort to everyone in the room.

Alexia, I didn’t bring enough money for your mother’s operation but without hesitation he called in to operate you mother immediately, and I borrowed his phone to reach you.” Nanny was very grateful to Dr. Black.

"Thank you!"  

"You're welcome, you should take a rest though. She’s already in good hands." Dr. Black looks at me and couldn't move his eyes away.

I shook my head, “I’ll just wait here. Andie, nanny, you guys should head home and freshen up. I want to stay with my mother in case anything comes up.” After hearing what I said, they didn't force me to rest.

I sat on the bench outside the ward all night and I didn’t realize that I’ve fallen asleep there. When I woke up, I find myself covered in blanket.

At first, I thought it was the nurse who put it on me when they’re making rounds, but the nurse I spoke to told me that the blanket was from Dr. Black.

 I am a little surprised. When, I arrive at his office, I saw a very young man sitting inside.

I am a little confused, but he says hello, "I am James Black."

I am a little surprised because he was so young, completely different from what I expected.

"Do you think I'm too young?" Doctor Black curses his lips and asks me to sit down.

"Yes, hello, my name is Alexia Brown, thank you for the blanket." I returned the blanket to him.

"I've seen your mother, she's in good condition, you can go home and rest."

I look up at Dr. Black's gentle eyes, which had a convincing power. I pause for a while, then nod,

"Okay."

Not too long when I set foot at my house, I received a call coming from the hospital, it turns out there was an emergency at the hospital and my presence will be needed there as soon as possible. Mother was rushed in the operating room again. The doctors attending here asks a lot about past medical records and I’m knowledgeable of my mom’s medical records.

"She fell down stairs six years ago and suffered a lumbar fracture..."

"Your mother's situation is a bit complicated. You should be prepared for the worse. The situation may be more dangerous and may have cost you expensively." The doctor frowns.

"How much do I need to prepare?" I am in the verge of tearing up in front of the doctor.

"Prepare 100,000 first!" The doctor was called away by the nurse.

All of a sudden, I collapsed.

Yesterday I borrowed 10,000 dollars from Andie, but the money was almost spent, and then I pay a lot more, but it was still not enough. I suddenly feel so desperate and cold all over.

"Alexia, I still have money." Nanny was also scared by the doctor's quote.

I shake my head. I won't ask for Nanny's money. She doesn’t earn much and has a family to feed.

The more I sank my thoughts into it, the more frightening the situation was. I want to talk with Dr. Black, but to my demise he’s on call for operation at the moment. Surely, I’ll have to wait until the operation was over.

"How could have this happened? I thought the operation was a success yesterday, isn’t that what Dr. Black said?”  Andie’s furious of the words that’s coming out of the doctor’s mouth.

Finally, Dr. Black's operation was over, and I rushed over to his office,

"I'm looking for you, sit down. "I couldn't say anything. I just listen to his instructions mechanically. Just about time. I’m looking for you, you might want to sit down.” I followed his instructions without a word and I felt like an automaton, programmed to follow the boss.

Minutes later Andie and nanny also found their way into his office.

He pours a glass of water and handed it to me, as I sat down. Then he pushed the medical diagnosis to me up front and says patiently,

"Ms. Alexia, your mother has been successful in the operation, but she was too weak to have infection complications. The medication has been increased."

"Then my mother… will likely die from these complications?" I shivered from the question I asked. Dr. Black fell silent.

I know that I’m prepared for the worst to happen at some point, but that’s my mother we’re talking. Anyhow, you can’t be mentally prepared for losing a loved one. At the moment, my thoughts were clanging around each other and I’m caught in an illusory. The delusions my mind was playing.

The atmosphere in the office suddenly becomes depressive. Nanny and Andie couldn't help crying, but at this moment, I couldn't cry anymore.

"Alexia, we will do our best to save your mother! Don't worry!" Doctor Black looks at my sad expression, and he was a little sad.

"By the way, Dr. Black, I have a question." Andie asks suddenly,

“If a person just fell off the bed, wouldn’t it be this serious unless there wasn’t enough force to penetrate, and cause a blunt physical trauma, wouldn’t it? Could it be that she was hit by a heavy object?

Doctor Black shakes his head and says, "There was no sign of a heavy hit. She has an intracranial hemorrhage. There are many reasons can cause this, and it may also be caused by irritation."

"Oh." Andie looks at me.

I thought my mother was finally managing through a dangerous period. I didn't expect her to have an intracranial hemorrhage again and in need of a second operation.

Hearing this news, I almost break down. I have submitted my resignation report and no longer have a job, and the money I borrowed was almost used up. If I don't have any money, then my mother can't even reside in the general ward. What should I do?

I'm really desperate looking for money getting less and less, and now I don't even have anyone to rely on. After thinking about it, I called my dad.
