Chapter 5: Doomsday III

...........

And before long, they finally reached their first destination, a grocery store, or more like a street with several stores of various necessities.

All the cars stopped by, and the individuals within exited, being guided by Natalia's threads to assemble, and as decided before, they just waited.

The rest of the work was on Silver and Natalia as they entered one of the grocery shops, quite a big shop, and while Silver sensed several people, he didn't pay much attention to them since they were all basically hiding.

He went on to collect all the necessities and food that provide high nutritional value, long shelf life, and are easily accessible or sustainable.

That includes canned foods such as canned fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and also Grains like rice, wheat, oats, beans, lentils, and quinoa which are rich in carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. They have a long shelf life and can serve as a staple food source.

They also got Nutrient-dense Powders such as protein powders, powdered milk, powdered eggs, and powdered greens (like spirulina or wheatgrass) which can provide essential nutrients and be easily stored.

And they ended the shopping spree with some canned fish and meats, money and sweeteners, long-lasting vegetables, and some vitamins and supplements.

The grocery was quite big with dozens of carts about, all of which were filled to the brim with necessities and controlled by Natalia's threads to make things easier for her.

After all, not everyone has his ridiculous amount of energy as energy seemingly can not be increased with potential points but increasing any other stats also rises it, thus why his energy is so ridiculously high.

His soul has reached a ridiculous value of 50, about five times that of regular people, which is likely the side effect of the Silver Effect.

The carts were pushed outside and were received by the people waiting outside, transporting everything to their cars, yet there was still plenty of vacant space for more.

And while they could see a little bit around them, only around a half to 1 meter around them, Silver still didn't allow them to move around too much as he toured around with Natalia, basically breaking into most shops around.

He especially focused on pharmacies as he emptied them whole. He knows that a chance like this may only be possible amidst the fog where very few could see, so he chose to take it.

And his job only got easier as the fog got thicker and started drifting into the buildings and shops about, somehow rushing even to the tightly closed shops.

Without wasting much time, the group marched again, their goal this time is to pick up their families which went strangely smoothly, too smooth in fact.

Nothing happened. Nothing got in their way except for the fog getting even thicker, but that didn't matter to them much.

The only other problem was that some of Silver's employees didn't find their families at home, so they had to stay there and wait for them.

None of them wanted to stay in the city either, knowing full well that staying with Silver was not only safer due to his place being outside of the city but also because of his power.

"Will you really stay here?" Natalia had to make sure as she asked him with worry.

"I have to, not only to bring back those who stayed with me but also to test a few things," Silver nodded, his mind seeming to be elsewhere, "It's strange though... Nothing happened."

"It's strange," Natalia agreed, "Any ideas?"

"I have a few assumptions but I can only verify them when the fog reaches its peak," Silver nodded as he narrowed his eyes.

"The fog? So it's doing something we can't see," Natalia nodded in understanding.

"Stop," Silver frowned before instructing, a pleased smile slowly emerging on his face. By this point in time, they were going back right where they came from, taking the same roads because they'd rather not face the unknown.

The roads they came through before were safe, so they decided to go back through them, and they just happened to stumble upon the dead body they left behind.

"I have just confirmed that there are zombies... I don't know if doomsday will revolve solely upon the dead but at least we know, our enemies are zombies, and we have one right before us," A fascinating smile emerged on his handsome face as he got out of the car, or perhaps, that smile would be fascinating only to someone like Natalia, crazy would be more fitting for everyone else.

Natalia followed after him with a look of anticipation as they walked ahead, followed closely behind him until they reached the body.

The dead body was twitching ever so slightly, seemingly struggling to move, the smell it was releasing was utterly disgusting as if it have been dead for months.

"You..." Suddenly, Natalia realized something as she eyed Silver strangely, "Did you kill him because of this? As an experiment? Did you predict all of this?"

"I predicted nothing," Silver shook his head slightly, "I only verified a possibility. There are too many unknowns in this situation for me to predict anything."

He was telling the truth. While his mind felt clearer and his thought process felt smoother than ever, he still felt tiny against the game of awakening, so he just sought to try everything and see if anything sticks, but that was enough for Natalia to look at him in a new light.

"He seems to be in the middle of transforming," Silver noted, verifying a hypothesis of his, "As I thought, when the fog reaches its peak, the dead will come back..."

"That..." Natalia took a deep breath, "I guess I need to go back quickly and secure the labs. No, secure the entire facility and prepare a place where we can store zombies for testing."

He didn't need to say anything, she already understood that they will certainly start researching zombies.

"Take the body with you and be careful, never let your guard down," Silver advised and watched as Natalia manifested her threads wrapping the body tightly with them before putting it on the truck.

"Take your time on the way back," She has to go back by herself without his guidance, relying solely on her memory and threads to find the way back amidst the fog which shouldn't be hard, "And remember, Larry left while we were away, but don't put him to waste, I'd like to see what an awakener can transform to after death."

Unfortunately for Larry, Silver adapted way too fast, not minding killing for the sake of his goals, and the latter knew that people like Larry aren't trustworthy, not with the world going to shit.

"Um," Natalia nodded as she got into the car, although she couldn't help but ask, "Are you sure you don't want us to leave you a car?"

"Yeah, there are plenty of cars around after all," Silver shook his head before quickly vanishing into the fog, only carrying his duffel bag with him.

It was time to verify one of his most important hypotheses, how to get potential points.

He has several assumptions regarding that, either they require killing zombies or practice among other unlikely possibilities.

But first, he walked around, taking some time to find a truck that's not only big enough but also has keys. While Silver noticed some people who hid in their vehicles, most seem to prefer to hide in their homes, thus why many cars and trucks were left behind in panic, with their keys still inside.

So his first stop was some shops that specialize in selling laboratory equipment which his labs will certainly need soon enough.

The Silver Effect made things a whole lot easier, allowing him to break into the stores without much trouble, although he had to slowly transport the equipment.

Things were going so smoothly that when some trouble stumbled upon him, or more like, when he stumbled upon some trouble, he didn't find it surprising, rather, he was waiting for it.

"I know you're there, can you open the door?" Silver calmly stated as he stood before the metal entrance of the shop.

Most other shops weren't too tightly secured, but this one was because as he sensed, there were people inside, and among them was an awakener.
