Chapter 8: Why Is The Moon Lonely?

As I flew out of her house, I saw her coming out after me, she looked at the sky and said "Ryan stop! Going out like this will be dangerous."

"I know, but I have important things to take care of, I'll be back in an hour, wait for me." I said and flew towards that warehouse.

These wings are fast, but not as much as I expected them to be, well I am just a newborn, but the biggest problem is my torn shirt, fuck it was expensive.

With teary eyes I reached there and saw the guards, they looked panicked, did something happen?, but then I heard them talking about something.

"Where did that watch go?" A man asked in a worried tone.

"Are we going to die?" His subordinate said with horror evident on his face.

"No, we just need to find that watch before nightfall." A man said before moving away.

Hehe...so this is happening because of the sweet little watch on my wrist, cool then I just need to wait for a few hours, but what should I do till then?, but suddenly I felt someone behind my back, I quickly summoned my sword and did a backward slash, but to my disappointment, I felt nothing, so I turned around but no one was there.

Weird, I am certain that someone was here, but who was it, tsk..... I'll just check it with my eyes. The buildings turned transparent and I was able to see every single life signature, but nothing abnormal, just humans and insects.

"This is too suspicious." I muttered under my breath. I waited for a few hours but nothing happened, now the sun was setting the horizon, and finally my waiting period was over, a white car came in and stopped abruptly and a man with rose blonde hair stepped out and said "I hope you guys found my watch because if you didn't, only destruction is waiting for you."

"Boss we tried our best, but couldn't find your watch, please forgive us, we didn't take it, infact no one here is stupid enough to steal from you, it must have been an outsider." A man said, poor guy was really scared.

"So you maggots are saying that someone sneaked inside, while you guys were gossiping about useless things?, you all deserve to die." the man said and released a fire blast from his hands and scorched the men standing outside.

"Woah man chill out, are you talking about this beauty over here." I said while walking towards the man, showing him the watch I stole.

"So the one who stole my watch was you?Ryan I didn't know you were this brave, did you grow an extra pair of balls?" The man smirked.

"Why?, you want to suck on them?, just so you know I prefer women." I said moving forward.

"Oh a foul mouthed one, haven't met people like you in a while." the man said while cracking his fingers.

Hmm.....he has normal fire as his power, won't work on me.

"Yes, and you never will." I said, still calm and collected.

"Oh." He said and conjured a fire blast on his hand and released it in my direction. I just stood there and waited for the blast to hit me, but when his attack touched my body, I didn't feel anything.

So he can't hurt me?.....ah fuck it, I ran towards him, but due to my increased speed he couldn't react in time, I landed a solid punch on his throat, the impact caused him to stumble a few steps back, he quickly released a dozen of fire blasts but I ignored them and went straight at him, his green eyes now wide in horror "Hey we can talk, stop this I give up, I will tell you everything you want to know." The man said with a resolute expression, making me stop my attack.

"Spit it out." I said while conjuring black fire.

"Few months ago a request was given to our mercenary group. We were tasked to kill you but didn't do it because the people who wanted us to kill you said you were a human, but killing a human doesn't require supernatural beings. We were suspicious, so we kept an eye on you but didn't try anything severe." The man said with a serious look.

"Do you know who they were?" Finally a ray of light pierced through the wall of questions.

The man shook his head and said "No one knows who they were or where they came from."

I used my optic power to check for any sudden change in his body to make sure he's not lying, but the man was not lying. Feeling disappointed, I walked towards him and said "Anything else?"

The man looked at my wrist and said "Will you please return my watch?It's really important to me."

"Oh sure I would have done that anyway but-" I said, and then shaped my fingers like pincers, with them I pierced his neck and pulled out his throat, his neck now empty and hollow, "Dead people don't need to check time." I finished my words with his life.

The man's lifeless body fell down on the cold ground, but I didn't feel anything, but why?Why does life hold so little meaning to me?No guilt, no trauma, utterly nothing.

I used the black fire to increase the time flow on his dead body, the body soon started decomposing, the flames didn't stop until the corpse was completely gone.

"Why?" I said and turned towards the warehouse filled with orbs, I enter the area and see a familiar scene, the storage was still filled with small sized crates, I opened one of them and took out an orb from the crate and set it on fire, the deep green colour of the orb changed to blue then followed by violet, but I didn't stop there and continued using the fire, the orb soon turned white, but suddenly the white orb started getting absorbed in my body.

Good, I feel stronger, so these things store energy which can be consumed.

"Hahahaha....I struck a gold mine" I released the multipurpose black fire on all the crates, soon I felt a great influx of energy which slowly came towards me, getting absorbed until nothing was left. The warehouse which was filled with crates, now looked empty.

Haaa...that felt so good, such a pity this can't be used on humans, they won't be able to handle this energy.

Well I should return now, then I released my wings and flew away.

A castle made up of a material not known to humanity, the castle looked gothic, dark corridors and unoccupied rooms, a throne room was situated at the exact centre of it.

The room was basked in moonlight which gave it a rare peaceful allure.

Suddenly a hooded figure entered the room and knelt down, he said in a respectful tone " Ryan Miller has awakened, he is now a dragon. I saw him meeting with goddess Selene, she seems to like Ryan."

"Did they have any physical contact?" A female voice resounded in the room, making the man flinch in horror because he was currently in the presence of the new vampire queen.

"No, your highness, he ran away before she could do anything to him." The man replied, his voice still shaking.

"You can leave, report me if something happens." She said, the man left so fast, it almost felt like his life depended on it.

"Ah... he's still pure, but that woman needs to stay in her place, fucking whore."

"Ryan, I hope you still remember me" The woman said in an emotional voice.

"Mika." She called out, soon a girl emerged from the shadows and said in a playful tone "What do you want your highness?"

The girl wore a yellow dress, which looked magnificent in the moonlight, making her look like a young princess. She was Mika, the vampire queen's right hand.

"Keep watch on him, Don't let the hybrids touch him." The woman shrouded in shadows said in a voice which lacked emotions.

"As you wish, my lady." Mika said as she turned into hundreds of bats and disappeared.

I reached Selene's house and knocked on the door, expecting the maid to open the door but it was Selene in her white nightgown.

Damn....she looks sexy.

"Hey." I said, still feeling awkward about what happened.

"So, you finally came back, come in." She said I followed her inside, and she took me to her room, but this time I was sure she wouldn't hurt me.

"So, where did you go?" she asked while sitting on her bed, then she patted her bed and gestured to me to sit beside her.

"To the warehouse near the abandoned slums." I said, but still didn't move from my position.

"So you killed the mercenary guy?" She asked in an intrigued tone.

"No, he died because he couldn't see the time." I smirked

"Poor guy, you even stole his watch?" she asked

"It's not stealing, I just picked this because it didn't have an owner to begin with." I said with a firm tone because what I said was the truth.

"So you found something?" she asked but this time her smile disappeared like it never existed.

"Yup, just like you said they were mercenaries and someone paid them a lofty sum to kill me, But you are a goddess, you should know who they are right?" I asked hoping to find out who those people were.

"Unfortunately I don't, I have very limited knowledge about this world." she sighed.

"Oh, when did you come here?" I started to feel dissatisfied.

"It's been three years." She said, sadness visible in her eyes.

Fine...I'll take the bullet this time.

I moved towards the bed and sat next to her leaning on the side, Selene looked at me with her mesmerising blue eyes and said "Aren't you scared now?" she asked in a low tone, which only I could hear.

"No, I know you won't try to kill me, anyways, why don't you tell me your story?" I said with a soft smile.

"You want to hear it?It's not interesting, trust me-..oh you don't trust me." Her expression saddened even more, she now looked like a wet puppy all alone in the rain.

I pulled her closer and gently laid her on my chest and said "Tell me everything about yourself, I might start trusting you after knowing about you."

"Do you know about me and Endymion?" she asked, her head still on my chest.

"So it's true that you fell in love with a handsome shepherd named Endymion, who was put to sleep so he can live an eternal life?" I asked in a soft and calm voice.

"Yes, it's true except for the fifty daughters' story." she said, hiding her face.

"Then why are you sad?He can live for eternity just like you can." I said, still wondering about her cause of suffering.

"I used to visit him every night, spending time by his side, but a century ago something happened."

Like usual I went to Mount Latmus to meet him, but when I reached there" she started crying "I saw his rotten body, someone killed him. He left me all alone."

"Selene, I believe he loved you as much as you loved him, or else he would not have gone to sleep just for the sake of being with you forever." I said while patting her head.

According to mythology Selene, the moon goddess once asked Zeus, the god of thunder to bless her lover with eternal life. Zeus agreed but the eternal life came with a cost. The cost was heavy because he could only achive it if he goes to sleep forever.

She lifted her head and looked at me with her teary eyes and said "You think so?"

"I believe it, now take it all out, you don't have to keep holding the pain. Just let go of it." I said, hugging her tight making sure she doesn't feel lonely. She fell asleep after crying for hours, I didn't move an inch that night.

I softly caressed her face, beholding her beauty, her skin looked radiant. Selene cried a lot, maybe losing her lover was devastating for her, even though I know what it feels like to lose a loved one.

Soon she woke up, blinking her eyes slowly, she looked better now.

"Sele-" I tried to say something but she tightened her grip on my body and said "Don't say anything, stay with me tonight."

She took a deep breath and leaned on my chest, she stayed in my embrace for the entire day, I was surprised my body wasn't sore.
