The Last Session

Idril placed her hands on the short man bleeding out in front of her. The elven woman began frantically reciting a prayer and a golden glow appeared around her hands as her friend took a breath and opened his eyes.

She looked up to her other comrades and saw the chaos around them. Her eyes went wide as she saw an enemy mercenary swinging a mace towards a dark haired human who was looking the other way while chanting a spell. Bright red runes covered his skin as the magic flowed through his being.

"Penn! Behind you!"

There was a pained howl and a spray of blood from the mercenary. He dropped his mace as he looked down and saw the curved blade of a dagger protruding from his chest. Standing behind him now was a horned demonkind woman holding the hilt of the blade to his back. As she pulled the blade back out, the man slumped to the ground.

At that moment, there was a sudden flash of heat as Penn finished his casting and a fireball launched from his hands. Straight in the path of the blazing sphere was their target, a wizard who was bent on acquiring the power to control time and bend it to his will. He attempted unsuccessfully to dive out of the way, getting caught with the destructive force of the fiery explosion. Launched back, the wizard slammed into the wall behind him and slid to the ground, charred and unconscious. Penn turned to the woman who protected him.

"I appreciate your help Reita, but can you try not to make such a mess next time?"

My friends at the table all cheered and celebrated their victory over the boss. We were playing our favorite tabletop RPG together, Dungeons N' Dangers (DnD), and I was their Dungeon Master. I loved running this game for them, and we had been playing this particular campaign for a few months so far. Belle turned to me and smiled. She was a pretty girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, and she played as Reita, the party's rogue.

"That was a fun fight, Michael. It was a pretty close call there at the end."

Matt spoke up as well.

"For sure. It felt good to finally blast that bastard to hell." He laughed.

Matt was a bit of a nerdy looking guy in need of a haircut, and our resident sorcerer, Penn. He was a shorter fellow with shaggy brown hair.

Talking amongst themselves at the table were the two others, a brunette girl, Sarah, with glasses and green eyes, and a blonde guy named John who was built like a football player.

Sarah played our Elven cleric, Idril, and John ironically played as a small halfling monk named Xander. These two had been my friends since way back in middle school.

This whole time I had just been smiling. This was exactly the situation I had been waiting for. Finally, I spoke up.

"I'm glad you guys are enjoying yourselves, but I don't think I ever said that the fight was over."

The players looked at me with shocked expressions.

"You've just activated Merek's contingency plan. You all suddenly hear a deep rumbling, and the room you're in begins to shake violently. What's your next move?"

The players frantically began talking amongst themselves about what to do, when suddenly, we actually did hear a deep rumbling. John spoke up.

"Wait, Michael, if you've had awesome special effects like this the whole time, why haven't you used them?"

I looked around for the source of the noise.

"This isn't me. Something weird is going on."

As soon as I finished talking, the room began to shake. What the hell was going on? Dice began to fall off the table and my friends began grabbing onto things to stabilize themselves. I got up and tried to look out the window but the shaking threw me to the ground.

Matt yelled "What the fuck is happening? Is this an earthquake?"

Sarah began to scream.

Then everything shifted. It was as if the whole world was being tilted to the side. Then I heard more screams, but I could no longer distinguish which friends were screaming because I was too focused on my now spinning world. As I spun faster and faster, everything became a blur. As I lost consciousness, I took my last look at the world.
