“Give me one year of your life and I’ll give you the money you need.” Feng Mian is a normal and down to earth modern woman. She just wanted an ordinary life, an ordinary job and find an ordinary man to marry in the future. (Yes, all should be ordinary). But when family matters took a turn for the worst, she faced a huge dilemma called shortage of money. Suddenly, a contract came due to a series of coincidences. Zhang Liang was fed up with his father's (yes, father not mother) matchmaking schemes for him. He wanted to have a peaceful year because this was his chance to expand his business overseas, yet his father didn’t seem to get the message. When an ordinary fresh graduate employee in his company accidentally saw a scene, he decided to take the chance. “Since she has a normal background with nothing remarkable, nothing should go wrong, right?” Browsing through the contract, Feng Mian gritted her teeth. 'Fine. It was just one year of my life anyway. I wouldn't lose a lot.' But was it true? Or would that one year turn out to be a ride full of ups and down for both of them? ... Feng Mian arrived back home before the sun set. The sky started to turn red when she stepped out of the car. Her eyes looked in the direction of the sunset. The sun itself was blocked by the tall buildings in the capital city, but the light still entered the city as the lamps started to light up one by one.
"Welcome back, Madam," Butler Lou opened the door. He noticed that Feng Mian was staring in the direction of the sunset. "Madam. If you like, you can go to the rooftop and see the view from there."
"Ah, maybe someday," Feng Mian replied with a smile. She walked inside and smelled the sweet smell of chicken soup. Her eyes lit up. "Is dinner ready?"
"Not yet, but Chef Lu is preparing it. President Zhang is coming home, so he asked us to prepare dinner."
"He's coming back?"
Feng Mian was stunned. For the past few days or maybe weeks, Zhang Liang didn't come home before midnight because of his work. She could guess that he must be busy because it was the time for him to prepare for his overseas expansion on top of the valentine project. It was truly unexpected that he would come home today.
Well, it worked for her too. Because he would be coming back, Chef Lu ended up cooking. She thought that she would stay long enough in the party until dinner, but Feng Mian was not the party type of girl. She preferred to just stay at home and do what she liked: drawing and painting.
Well, it could wait for now.
"I'll head to the dining room later."
Butler Lou nodded. "I'll tell Chef Lu to cook more for your portion too."
"That'll do. Thank you, Butler Lou."
Feng Mian headed to her bedroom, intending to take a bath first before eating. Butler Lou walked to the kitchen. He could see Chef Lu, a middle aged woman who had been serving Zhang Liang for years, was busy cooking a large pot of soup.
Hearing him entered, Chef Lu raised her head. "Is there anything wrong, Lou?"
"Madam returned back earlier, so it'll be better to cook more for her too."
"Master already instructed me to cook more for Madam." Chef Lu tilted her head. "Hadn't Master told you?"
Butler Lou blinked a few times. A small smile appeared on the corner of his lips. He had seen Zhang Liang and Feng Mian's interaction so far. He had to say that the two of them were keeping their distance and respected each other. Probably, this would mean that the first step to welcome the real madam in Zhang Family had come.
Once Zhang Family members got married, the key of the mansion would be handed to the wife because they would be responsible for anything in the house. However, Zhang Liang hadn't instructed him to give her yet. So far, the only key Feng Mian had was only the key to the house and also her studio.
"Lou? Is there anything wrong?"
"No, nothing. Just make sure to serve delicious food. I'm sure Master is tired."
Chef Lu smiled. "Of course! Just leave it to me. I'll make sure they'll be satisfied."
It took some time before Feng Mian walked down to the dining room. She had changed to a white gown as she walked down the stairs. Her eyes lit up when she saw Chef Lu walking in with a pot on her hand.
"Wow, you're really fast, Chef Lu."
"I'm doing my best," Chef Lu responded. "Master will be back soon. Do you want to eat together with him?"
Feng Mian paused for a moment. Honestly, she enjoyed her time to eat alone without Zhang Liang's presence. He could be quite intimidating at times. However, Feng Mian knew that she couldn't possibly do that forever. She also needed to get used to him.
"Yes."
"Alright. I'll prepare the utensil."
"Ah, I can take it myself."
"Silly girl, that's my job."
Feng Mian grinned. "I'm used to at least prepare this much for myself. I can't possibly let myself get so pampered, right?"
Chef Lu just laughed and let Feng Mian take the plates and chopsticks. For some reasons, both of them were used to using chopsticks to eat their meals, so Chef Lu didn't need to prepare spoon and fork. Of course, some dishes were exceptions, but this time was not included.
Feng Mian returned back to the dining room right when there was the sound of a car stopped at the front door. She put the plates and walked to the door before opening it. In front of her, Zhang Liang was loosening his tie as he walked to the door.
"Welcome home, Brother Liang."
Zhang Liang nearly paused in his footsteps. Because Feng Mian was using endearment, the expression in her face was full of love. He knew it was directed to her brother and not him, but that still surprised him. Today, he saw so many different expressions on her face.
"I'm back," Zhang Liang replied calmly and entered the house. He handed his bag to Butler Lou. "Put this on my table."
"Yes, Master."
Feng Mian looked at Zhang Liang nervously. She decided that it would be better if she just acted as his wife normally. "Uhm, do you want to take a bath first or eat?"
"I'll take a bath first. Do you mind waiting?"
"No, not at all."
I won't be long."
Feng Mian nodded. She noticed that Zhang Liang's gaze was fixated on her face for a few seconds when they talked. Tilting her head for a bit, Feng Mian wondered if there was anything on her face.
He seemed to be a bit different than usual today.
'Nah, must be my imagination. He's still the same Demanding Demon.'
Recalling her own nickname to Zhang Liang, Feng Mian's lips curled up slightly. Ops, she should just set the table first, she had only put the plates and chopsticks but not in their right place.
