Chapter 40: Headless Circle
The Underground.
A den of undead people that clung to life due to various reasons.
For some, it might be past resentment.
For some, it might be the unwillingness to give up on one's goals.
For some, it might be the forced slavery or rescue.
There was one thing about the underground that would never change, though.
They had to be hidden from the world. Living deep below the surface, the underground became like a metropolis filled with pungent odor and death strewn around the streets. In this world, everyone could suddenly stop moving and that would be just the death escaping this place.
Vis had finally arrived in this place, his eyes looking down at it from above.
Many zombies were working as a common force. Along with them, skeletons also could be seen doing the most ordinary tasks which were carrying the bags with some unknown stuff inside.
The roads had houses lit up in the blueish light and ghouls, dullahans, ghosts, wraiths, banshees, and much more undead moved with undisguised contempt to each other.
However, one could often smell a wind of living as well.
Various races were often requesting services from the undead. This world continued to tread in pain, but its residents were one of the most hypocritical people Vis had ever seen…
"Now… Let's gather more information," Information was always the key.
Vis hid his face with the hoodie, then blended in the streets, his smell unknown even to him.
-
[A week later.]
"Master, I got an invitation to the Headless Circle." Miku took a letter out of her pocket, then passed it to her master.
For the whole week, Miku had been going around the whole underground in research of various stuff.
She was like a cute dullahan newbie that wanted to set herself in this world.
Her seniors, the older dullahans, had sent an invitation to the Headless Circle, but on the greater view, it was just one of many dullahan groups.
Since Vis had no proper disguise skills, he at most would be able to fake himself as a ghoul. But his black bones would probably expose his status as the Soul Collector's servant and it would just cause disaster here.
That was why Miku became the one to do all the important jobs. In the meantime, Vis had been focusing on training the ghost monkey and polishing his consciousness.
It could fight well and listen to the orders seamlessly. The monkey had a well-established connection with Vis and both of them could learn ghostly skills now.
But where would Vis get those ghostly skills? As much as he wouldn't like to do it, Vis needed to rely on the underground market.
He had an option to learn those on his own, but that would take too much time.
"Our Miku is about to become Madam Miku," Vis jested while reading the letter.
Other than the underground market, one could also set up one's services here. Those were like mercenary ones, but since the undead was hidden from the world, those services were more like assassinations and many other cruel ones.
The noble services were the most exquisite and those rarely ended in anything else other than disaster…
Those noble services were done by undead people related to 'The Undead Gods'. This term was worldwide known as such, but undead people called them just 'The Gods'.
The ghost that controlled Elder Yoru and taught him some necromancer skills related to ghosts, The Ghastly Abomination, had been one of the strongest ghosts under such god. Each undead type had many of those gods, apparently.
Vis' jaw didn't close for five minutes when he learned that as he believed that there would be just one ghost god and so on.
Fortunately, in this continent, there was just one of each type…
However, the underground was so deep below that it could lead one to many continents which were something Vis couldn't understand.
He glanced at Miku, "This Headless Circle is a known group. They are deeply connected to the Dullahan God in this continent… We can take a risk and become closer with them, then leech off their knowledge."
"Yes, Master. If that's what you want, then I will take a risk and steal everything," Miku was also more vocal and more human-like.
She and her red cheeks reminded Vis of how good dullahan class was for a cover. For a while, Vis felt like pulling those and so he did, his fingers pinching her red and soft cheek.
The white-haired dullahan blinked her eyes and kept an emotionless expression, but Vis was content as it looked like a more red color crept onto her face.
He said, "You will play the Madam Miku role and I will be your servant. Let's head over to them and see what they are up to. I wonder if we will learn something new."
The party of three set up on the adventure… The ghost monkey disappeared into the black book, though.
Leaving the shabby house, Vis closed the door, then covered his whole features with the hoodie yet again.
His dullahan stood before him, then guided him forward with her chin up.
Miku was a dullahan made out of a strong and elegant race, so this kind of attitude was within her. Each of her steps was natural and unfazed!
"Headless Circle… It sounds like those guys believe they are the main dullahans. Exactly what I would expect from undead related to one of the gods."
