Entering Wellport, I felt a sense of hope. Within its small boundaries, we had been safe. Our life we had created had been untouched by anyone else. Venturing into the edges of Boston, that security had taken a severe beating. I didn’t want to leave my small town ever again. I imagined a shield around it that would keep all the elements away that threatened our happiness.
When we pulled up in front of the house, both of us sat quietly after the engine had been cut off.
I wondered if it was just shock that had us frozen. The darkness around us seemed heavier than it ever had before. The silence was loud and focused our minds even more on the events that had ruined such a perfect day.
Charlie picked my hand up and turned it over so the ring could be seen in the streetlight. “I still want this.”
My smile was stronger than I thought it would be, though my heart leapt at his words. “I do too.” I paused and weighed the silence between us again. “Want to go for a short walk?”
