Synopsis

-COMPLETED- WARNING: FL is scheming and evil. Like almost every dramatic romance novel, Lily Qin’s story began with an evil stepmother, a scheming stepsister, and a dumb ex-fiance. At twenty, she fell prey to their grand scheme and became the laughingstock of the country. In despair, she left. Seven years later, Lily Qin rose from the ashes. She was labeled as an empress, an iron lady, a genius, and a prodigy. She was Miss Tycoon. Now, at twenty-seven, Lily Qin was an established businesswoman who was single-handedly controlling her multinational company abroad. She was beautiful, smart, and successful. Women envied her while men couldn’t help but worship her ethereal beauty. With her devastating past, everyone had assumed that Lily would exact revenge on the people who had wronged her. Who would have guessed that behind that beaming smile of hers was a numb heart that aimed only to make more profit? "You got it wrong." Lily elegantly propped her chin on the back of her hand. "I am seeing you today because we have something in common. We're both villains in somebody else's eyes. And I think it's time for us villains to get our own happy ending. Don't you think so?" --- Zhuo Jingren’s love for Lily Qin was something that only he knew. Ever since they were children, he had his eyes on her. Yet, every time he had tried to confess, he would end up fainting from nervousness. So when Lily Qin promised to marry him if he became richer than her, Zhou Jingren did not hesitate to leave the orphanage and work his way up just to become her man. Who would have thought that years later, when he was successful and feared by many, he would come back to an engaged Lily Qin? Then she mistook him for an escort after eating his tofu? Preposterous! The worst thing was, she seemed to have forgotten everything about him. Hadn’t she promised to marry him the moment he became more prominent than her family? Now, after taking advantage of him, she dared to run away? This woman was a liar! He gritted his teeth as he watched her approach him. He was about to say something mean when she suddenly spoke. “Are you my new bodyguard?” She did not even wait for him to answer before tossing her car keys at him. “Drive. Let’s go wreak some havoc.” Thus, the mafia’s big boss became Lily Qin’s bodyguard. --- "So? What do you want as a compensation?" Zhuo Jingren asked her once again before laying down next to her. His elbow was resting on the ground and his palm was supporting his head as he looked at her intently.  The first thing that Lily noticed about Zhuo Jingren when he laid next to her was his exposed tanned chest. This made him look more casual… and hot. She didn't even realize she was staring at the latter. "Why are you staring at me like that?" He smirked at her. "Do you want me to compensate you with my body?" Lily immediately rolled her eyes at the latter. "Who wants your body? Hmp! I want money!" "Your mind is always thinking of money but your body actually betrays you. Am I right to say that I have a shameless wife?" "Hah! I am a strong and independent woman of the 21st century. I know what I want. But if you insist on giving your body, I will take it too!" Lily shamelessly said, taking off her stilettos. However, just when Lily was about to lie down beside Zhuo Jingren, he suddenly pulled her on top of him. With her body on top of his, their faces were really close and they could even feel each other's breath.  "What a shameless woman," he noted, the smile on his face only deepened. .... Cover is mine. Chapter 1Shrewd Woman

"I suppose there is a reason why you barged in without an appointment." Lily Qin smiled. She stared intently at the man in front of her.

"I heard you backed out from the engagement," the man gritted his teeth in annoyance. He hated Lily Qin's smile. It wasn't the way her beautiful thin lips lifted upwards, nor was it the crinkling of her left dimple. Her smile didn't quite reach her amber eyes and sometimes you could catch a flash of cunningness that would cross her face.

In those few moments as he stared at her, memories of his parents urging him to marry her started to fill his mind. It was a constant reminder of how he needed this marriage to save their family business.

"Why?" he asked.

Lily Qin instantly raised a brow at the question. "Why not?" she challenged.

"I deserve an explanation! Our families have been planning this engagement for months! You cannot back out now! This will ruin the reputation—"

"And that is my problem… because?"

"You-you tell me the reason for your preposterous actions or else—"

The man's words were interrupted when Lily Qin tossed an envelope in front of him. "See for yourself."

Liam instantly tore open the envelope. His eyes widened at the various documents and photographs he saw inside. "You… You sent someone to spy on me?"

Lily Qin instantly scoffed at his words. "Don't flatter yourself, Liam Arison. It was a business decision," she said as she pulled out another envelope and gave it to him.

"What do you mean? How could you ask someone to investigate me like this?" he asked before slowly opening the second envelope, assuming he would find more pictures of him being intimate with his childhood sweetheart. His face darkened as he recognized the contents.

"Acquisition. I want to acquire your properties in the Far East. To be specific, I want the retail companies you have in China, Hong Kong, and Singapore," she said, ignoring the dark look the man was giving her.

"Is this the reason why you initially agreed to the engagement?" Liam Arison's voice was venomous. He wanted to gobble up the beautiful woman in front of him. The smile on Lily Qin's perfect face made fury rise from the depths of his heart.

He remembered how his father had wanted this engagement to save their subsidiaries abroad. His father thought that by marrying his son into the prominent Facci family, he could save their business.

"Didn't you also want the same thing from me?" Lily Qin smirked at him, making his temper flare.

"How dare you! Do you think our Arison family is one you can bully like this? You just wait…"

"Tsk... Tsk… Liam. Have you forgotten about the photos that I gave you just now?" she asked, propping her head on her palm with the same smile plastered on her face. "Think about how your board of directors would react once they find out that the great Liam Ariston cheated on his fiancée with a mere starlet. With your halfbrother's impeccable performance lately, do you think the board will even hesitate before replacing their current CEO?"

"You—" Liam exploded; his eyes red, the veins in his head started to bulge. "You agreed to be my fiancée because of this? Didn't you?" Liam clenched his jaw as the realization hit him. He fell into the great Lily Qin's scheme!

"Alright… you are making it sound like I am a bad person." Lily waved her hand. "Liam, this is nothing but business. Your family wanted to take advantage of my dying grandmother and proposed a marriage to save your business. Think about it..."

Liam turned speechless at Lily Qin's words. She was telling the truth; his mother did take advantage of the two family's closeness and offered marriage to the dying Madam of the Facci family. At first, he thought that she had simply agreed to fulfil her dying grandmother's wishes.

Who would have thought that she would back out of the engagement a mere month after the death of Old Madam Facci?

He narrowed his eyes at the smiling woman in front of him before looking at the photos on the table. If the paparazzi were to get hold of these photos, it would cause a scandal and his career as the CEO would be over. His father might even kick him out of the family.

He, then, started to read the documents that Lily gave him. The amount that she was offering to buy those companies was not that bad. In fact, this was better than what most companies offered them in the past. However, the fact that a woman outsmarted him was something that Liam couldn't accept.

With a dark face, Liam got up from his seat and glared at her. "Lily, I never thought that you would be this shrewd. I always thought that you were kind like your mother and grandmother! Who would have thought that you had inherited your attitude from your bastard father?" Seeing the smug smile disappear from Lily's face instantly made him happy. "You think you are so high sitting here in your lavish office? Did you think I did not know about what happened seven years ago? Huh? You are a slut. You deserved everything that happened to you!" seeing Lily shifting uncomfortably made him smile.

"I will confer with my father and lawyers about the offer and send the documents back to you when the board decides to accept it," he said, storming out of her office, leaving a pale-faced Lily staring blankly at the now closed door.

"Yang Mi, cancel all my meetings today." Lily did not wait for her secretary to respond as she dropped the call and pressed the 'Do Not Disturb' button on her office phone.

She then stared at the floor to ceiling windows that gave her access to the magnificent skyscraper view in the busy streets of London.

It was summer-time, yet the sky was sprawled with dark clouds. The winds started to howl like a hungry wolf looking for its prey. The first crack of lightning, followed by the booming sound of the angry thunder made her jolt in her seat.

She hated the rain. She hated how it always made her feel vulnerable and weak, like a child waiting for someone else's protection. She clenched her teeth as she reached for the remote to close the blinds in her office, hiding from the bullets of raindrops that splattered against her windows.

She then reclined in her seat and closed her eyes. She remembered Liam's poisonous words from earlier.

Did she really deserve everything that happened seven years ago?

It opens its mouth and asks, “Do you want to see your daughter again? If so, follow me. Her soul has already left for another world.” Leslie agrees. That’s the last thing she remembers before losing consciousness. When she opens her eyes again, she finds herself—or rather, her soul—standing beside her unconscious body on a hospital bed. “How is this supposed to help me find Calliope!” she exclaims. “This is not your body. Your body is dead. This is my original host, Charlene Li,” explains the toy fox. “You can possess her body to find Calliope, but if you do, you must finish her uncompleted mission for her.” “And what mission is that?” “To marry the second most eligible CEO in the city.” ‘This,’ Leslie concludes, ‘is a scam.’ But she has no other choice. ********** Meanwhile, the second most eligible bachelor in the city, Calix Xu, is patting himself on the back for thwarting his grandmother’s attempts to marry him off. For you, my darling, I would part the mountains, split the sea, and cause havoc on Earth just to have you." - - - - - In every love story, there's always a vengeful and venomous fiancée who was engaged to the rich and handsome CEO that fell for the poor, but gentle and innocent female lead. Zhao Lifei was prepped her entire life to marry one man, but suddenly, his heart was captured by another. She was face-slapped, destroyed, and disowned for loving Zheng Tianyi. She was willing to sacrifice her youth, time, and heart for the man, but all she got was pain and despair. It took two harsh, but awakening years for Zhao Lifei to finally understand the mistakes she has made in the past. After her redemption, it was now Zhao Lifei's turn to experience a love grander than the female lead. Smarter, feistier, and wittier, Zhao Lifei knew how to survive the cruel, backstabbing, and harsh upper-class society was. "A cheating fiancé that broke my heart? Screw him, I'll find someone richer!" "All of my friends have abandoned me? Whatever, I'll find better ones!" "My parents disowned me? That's fine, my grandfather is wealthier and more powerful than both of them combined!" To the polar opposite of the snarky Zhao Lifei, was the incredibly wealthy and powerful, yet ruthlessly cold Yang Feng. Yang Feng, the King of the Business Empire, was a man to be feared. Many have tried, but none had succeeded in garnering his attention. That is, until his path unexpectedly collides with Zhao Lifei. Challenges will arise, chaos will commence, and drama will ensue. But then again, what is a love story without disturbance? Read my full review in the comment section of Chapter 1 of "The Villian's Wife" because Webnovel can't silence me with their word count limit!😆😆 I proudly read and encourage my friends and film colleagues to read "The Villain's Wife" because it features Lily, a strong female lead who isn't afraid to show her vulnerabilities and confusion as she navigates her first real romantic relationship. The male lead, Zhuo Jingren, clearly falls in love first and grows from what you fear might be a stalkerish control-freak in the first few chapters to become an open, supportive, and vocal helpmeet and husband as the story progresses. Yes, Zhuo Jingren is handsome, strong, wealthy, and dangerous when crossed, but when it comes to Lily all he wants is to hear her take on the situation and to back her up first and foremost before adding his power to her plans. I feel strongly that given the disconnect between what is happening between men and women in the real world is not reflected in the translated offerings on Webnovel so I was thrilled to find this original gem! The first book I read on this app was "Full Marks Hidden Marriage," and I did so relucantly because of the manner in which Qidian staked their rights to English translations over amateur translations teams as they are the original publisher of the works. I loved the story, so I shamefully followed it from Volare to here. I felt even more awkward because I edited for a few Volare translators who all ended up having to delete their work after Qidian sent cease and desist letters to stop them from doing amateur translations. The next thing I read was "Bringing the Nation's Husband Home." I added a few other books to my library but I ended up finishing "Husband" simply because friends were filming the drama adaptation and I like to keep track of how well screenwriters follow a brief as that is knowledge I need on my job in film for future IP adaptation hiring decisions. I deleted the rest of the thingsbin my library because I was ashamed of myself for reading them. I hid my phone screen if I was reading in public as if I were watching p*rn. Why? Because of the incessant r-ape. BHTNH, A Billion Stars and everything else on offer featured a man who r-aped the female lead 3-5 times per story arc. Other characters defended the ML's behaviour, and even the female leads excused the behaviour as the ML being unable to control his passion or his anger or his jealousy. That is absolute BS and these characters are nothing short of criminal. R**e was also used to show that the female was pure and virginal because she had been 'taken forcefully' instead of being an active participant in her own sexuality. I do realise that some readers live in countries where that is the predominant attitude towards male roles/behaviour and female sexuality and the denial thereof, but for Western readers this stuff is horrid, offensive, appalling and makes for a shame-filled read. Serial r-ape is not relaxing in my opinion. In Lily we find a female lead who was weak in her youth but who has succeeded in business and has healthy, strong friendshi** with a male and a female best friend, this on an app where very few characters have any connections or conversations with other characters that do not revolve around the ML. Almost every 'Female' novel on the app fails the Bechdel test. The Bechdel–Wallace test is a measure of the representation of women in fiction. It asks whether a work features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. The requirement that the two women must be named is sometimes added, in case you didn't know about the Bechdel Test. Zhuo Jingren did not grow up wealthy, and he is not ashamed of being ignorant of the finer things in life. If Lily knows of and enjoys it then Jingren will give it a try, and Lily does the same for him and his interests. They go on married people dates... If you are looking for a female protagonist who is neither a ridiculously violent type, an infuriatingly stupid and clumsy type or a so soft and weak a breeze could break her type then you have found the right book! The FL is not the most book smart but she definitely has common sense and business acumen in buckets. I find her characterisation surprisingly refreshingly particularly in how she is exploring her feelings towards the ML - as in, she feels what real women feel in bewilderment towards their contradictory feelings! There are also no ridiculous misunderstandings, she actually talks to people around her and clears the air well before it becomes stupid. She does not suddenly become distracted when she gets together with ML and she is not some shy virgin keeping herself chaste and pure for the ML only! It’s the other way around. Now I will say ML might be unrealistically perfect in the sense of his devotion to FL - but dang it I need that to cleanse me of the rapist and yandere ML’s that seem to make up the majority of stories around here. The ML has his flaws and hardships in life but he does not allow this to distract from his feelings for ML. He is a steady and dependable partner - and they are partners! This is not a case of FL suddenly losing all agency when they get together and ML just does everything. No, they get **** done as a team and it’s awesome. Other positives: - You can tell the author thought about many elements of the story in advance. It does not feel cobbled together or rushed or just going with the flow. There is a method there and the reveals are well timed and do not pull you out of the flow of the story. - There is a good balance of romance, thriller and action to the story. Not so soppy that I skip parts of too verbose that it insults my intelligence as a ready. Very well balanced. - The author is clearly sensible and understands her audience. There is no glossed over rape, no justification of gratuitous violence and the world building makes sense. Even where the author has had to deviate away from or make up frameworks existing in the real world. - The side characters in the FL and ML’s orbits are well constructed in that they clearly have their own personalities and motivations and back stories. I did worry that they would become a bit trope-y (particularly the secretaries and the best friends) but they do complement the leads well. I will say though that some of the villains started out strong (Yang Lina, Qin Fei) with good backstories and motivations but others became a tiny bit cliched and over the top. This goes for both male and female villains. However, I think they do have a purpose in driving some of the drama and it is not super annoying or obvious as in other stories where villains that should have been removed keep recycling. I will say that where they are now makes absolute sense within the context of the story. I rarely write reviews or rave about a story. In fact this is only the second story that has received this treatment. Definitely recommend! Great job, author!
